Finikounda and MethoniA scenic road that takes you from beach to beach, from hill to hill, connects Finikounda and Methoni. In just a 10 minute drive, the landscape changes continuously; at every turn there is another gorgeous view. This is the amazing southern coast of the Pylia peninsula in Messinia. Both villages share an ancient past as both get a mention in Pausanias’ “Guide to Greece”, written in the second century A.D.

In recent years however, they have become popular with tourists for slightly differing reasons. In the case of Finikounda, a collection of golden sandy beaches, a feeling of “real Greece” and a breeze conducive for water sports have helped increase its popularity with visitors. Although Methoni too has a sandy beach, it is the medieval history of the town that is the main draw for tourists. The remains of the impressive Venetian castle dominate the beach and the Bourtzi tower has become has become one of the icons of Messinia.

FinikoundaFinikounda is a tranquil joy, and still retains the air of a quiet fishing village, even in midsummer. The narrow paved lane running parallel to the main beach is flanked by a variety of cafes, bars, tavernas and gift shops. At the western end of the beach is a picturesque harbour with fishing boats gently bobbing up and down. There is a range of good accommodation in the village itself and to benefit from an elevated view and the cooling breeze, in the villages of Lachanada, Grizokampos and Kamaria located up on the hills surrounding Finikounda. There are also a number of lovely campsites..BeachesThere are four sandy beaches in and around the village, all very accessible but yet you never get the feeling of being crowded in. The main village beach is at its most active at the harbour end, where cafes front the golden sand. The other end is more tranquil if this is your taste. To the east is Ligoammos (“little sand”), a small, cove-shaped beach and further still is the bigger Loutsa beach. Both are more easily reached by car. This prevents the sea from becoming choppy. Add to this the fact that all the beaches are initially very shallow and you have a very safe environment for young children to play in.

Inousses Islands and boat tripsThe cluster of islands that dominate the horizon from both Finikounda and Methoni are collectively known as the Inousses Islands. They consist of four main islands, running east to west: Venetiko, Schiza, Agios Marina and Sapi-enza. Although the 2001 census listed seven people living on Sapienza and two on Schiza they are in fact all uninhabited. No visit to this part of Messinia is complete without a boat trip out to explore them. Die Brise hier kommt meistens von Nordwesten, d.h. vom Land. Dies verhindert, dass das Meer rauh wird. Zusammen mit dem Umstand, dass alle Strände sehr flach sind, ergibt das eine sehr sichere Umgebung für kleine Kinder, um zu spielen.

Inousses Inseln und BootsfahrtenDie Inselgruppe, die den Horizont von sowohl Finikounda als auch Methoni dominiert wird gemeinsam bezeichnet als die Inousses Inseln. Here is a brief summary of what each island has to offer:The largest of the Inousses is Schiza, at 12 square kilometres. Its most interesting feature is a cave system known as Mavri Trypa, or the Black Hole, where pre-historic pottery shards have been discovered. Much of it is unexplored and access is difficult. To the west of Schiza is the smaller island of Agia Marina, which bears a modern church of the same name. It is visited by pilgrims from the mainland on its Saint’s day on 17th July. Other small islands that make up the Inousses are Bomba (Bomb) and Dio Del-fia (the Two Brothers) that surround Sapienza. Sapienza is the most interesting, and most visited, of the group of islands. There used to be a Benedictine mon-astery on the island, whose remains have now disappeared. It was here in 1209

that the treaty ceding Methoni and Koroni from the Franks to the Venetians was signed. The waters around the island have a more ancient history and many ships have been wrecked around it. Just to the north of the island a Roman sarcophagus can still be seen in the depths. A great place for snorkelling! The island is also home to two endangered species. The first of these is the Kri Kri, or Cretan wild goat. Native to the White Mountains in Crete a number were trans-ported to Sapienza in order to help preserve their existence. They are brown with a darker band around their necks and swept back horns and they can be very elusive in the forest. Easier to spot are the Mouflon Sheep. The males are also brown but with light patches and large, ram-like horns. The females re-semble small deer. The best place to see these is on the lovely little beach of Ammos, on the north coast of the island. A handsome lighthouse, 18m tall, crowns the south coast of Sapienza. It was built by the British in the 1890s. Southeast of this point is the Well of the Inousses, one of the deepest points in the Mediterranean at 5,121 metres. Not so good for snorkelling!

Im Jahre 1209 wurde hier der Vertrag über die Überlassung von Methoni und Koroni von die Franken an die Venezianer unterschrieben. Das Gewässer um die Insel hat eine ältere Geschichte und viele Schiffe sind dort gesunken. Im Norden der Insel kann man noch immer einen römischer Sarkophag in den Tiefen sehen. Eine toller Platz zum Schnorcheln!Die Insel ist auch das Zuhause zweier vom Aussterben bedrohten Tierarten. Die erste der beiden ist die Kri Kri oder Kretische Wildziege. Zu Hause in den Weißen Bergen Kretas, wurden einige nach Sapienza gebracht, um ihren Fort-bestand zu wahren. Sie sind braun mit einem dunkleren Streifen um den Hals und nach hinten gebogenen Hörnern und sie können im Wald sehr scheu sein. Einfacher zu sehen sind die Mouflon Schafe. Die Männchen sind auch braun, aber mit hellen Flecken und großen widderähnlichen Hörner. Die Weibchen äh-neln kleinen Rehen. Der beste Ort um sie zu sehen ist der liebliche kleine Strand von Ammos, an der Nordküste der Insel. Ein hübscher Leuchtturm von 18m

MethoniThe town of Methoni itself, crouched around the castle walls, it is an extremely pleasant town, with a number of small, shady squares to sit in and watch the world go by. There is a wide, sandy beach leading up to the castle and to the east it becomes narrower with a mix of sand and large pebbles. Behind it is a municipal campsite. Most accommodation can be found close to the castle. Apart from the castle Methoni offers a few other small sites of historical interest. There are two Venetian wells that are preserved, one at either end of the town. The first, on the left as you come into Methoni, is in Limariziou Square. The other is near the castle, in Syggrou Square. You can also see the remains of the Kapodistrian school, a once handsome building that contained one of the first schools built after the Greek War of Independence. This can be reached by fol-lowing Kapodistria road from the main road into town. Just past the school is the last of the old bridges that crosses the Siloso river. There used to be three, but two fell down and were replaced in the 20th century. This last remaining one is now under a preservation order.

MethoniDie sich an die Mauern der Burg schmiegende Stadt Methoni ist äusserst an-genehm mit seinen kleinen schattigen Plätzen, auf denen man sitzen und sich die Zeit vertreiben kann. Richtung Burg gibt es einen breiten Sandstrand, der im Osten schmäler wird mit seiner Mischung aus Sand und großen Kiesel-steinen. Dahinter liegt ein städtischer Campingplatz. Die meisten Übernach-tungsmöglichkeiten können nahe der Burg gefunden werden.Neben dem Schloss bietet Methoni ein paar andere Stellen von historischem Interesse. Es gibt zwei Venetianische Quellen, die noch erhalten sind und die sich an den beiden Enden der Stadt befinden. Die erste liegt, wenn man nach Methoni kommt, links am Limariziouplatz. Der andere ist nahe der Burg am Syggrouplatz. Man kann auch die Überreste der Kapodistrische Schule sehen,

erscheinen. Die Brücke selbst überspannt einen eindrucksvoll großen Was-sergraben. Pietro Casola, ein Italiener, der eine Pilgerfahrt nach Jerusalem un-ternahm, besuchte Methoni im Jahr 1494 und schrieb, dass „ jetzt ein großer Wassergraben ausgehoben wird, der, wenn vollendet, ein erstaunliches Werk sein wird“. Die Idee der Venezianer war wohl, das Meer einfließen zu lassen und die Burg von dem Festland ganz abzutrennen. Als die Ottomanen die Stadt im Jahre 1500 einnahmen, hatten sie jedoch die Arbeiten noch nicht beendet,.Rechts von der Brücke befindet sich eine Artilleriestation, die im Jahre 1460 auf General Giovanni Bembos Befehl gebaut wurdete. Links davon ist eine jüngere, die im Jahr 1714 von Antonio Loredan gebaut wurdete. An den Wände dieser Bastion kann man das Venezianisches Emblem des Löwen des Heiligen Marks sehen. Es ist eins unter vielen, die man rund um die Burg sehen kann.Nach dem Tor kommt eine scharfe Linkskurfe, eine Verteidigungslinie, die zwischen zwei Wänden und durch zwei weitere Tore führt. It is one of several that can be seen around the castle. Once through the gate there is sharp left turn, a defensive measure, that leads between two walls and through another two gates. The first of these has a circular hole in it – as its sightline is straight down the approach corridor one assumes this was for a cannon. The second gate leads you into the interior of the castle itself. This is divided into two parts by a wall immediately to the right. The southern and larger part is where the town was located before the French moved it. It is hard to imagine that the population that lived within these walls easily surpassed that of modern Methoni. It must have been a crowded and unsanitary life, and it is not surprising that the French chose to move the town.There are few buildings of the old town remaining now and the empty inte-rior of the castle is dotted with the remains of Turkish baths and a more recent Orthodox church. The CastleThe fortifications on this outcrop go back a long way to Mycenaean times. The fortress is entered by crossing an elegant, 14-arched, stone bridge. This was built by the French in 1828 and replaced the earlier wooden construction. Open daily (except Mondays) from 8am-3pm. Straight ahead over the bridge is the main gate into castle. It dates from the early 18th century, during the second period of Venetian occupation. The sides of the gate are decorated with faux Corinthian pillars with spears emerging behind them. The bridge itself crosses an impressively large moat. Pietro Casola, an Italian who was making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, visited Methoni in 1494 and writes that “a large moat is being opened now, which, when finished, will be an amazing piece of work”. It seems the Venetians’ idea was to let the sea flow in and entirely separate the castle from the land. However they had not completed this work by the time the Ottomans took the town in 1500. Die BurgDie Entstehung der Befestigungen reicht weit in mykenesche Zeiten zurück. Die Festung betritt man über eine elegante 14-gewölbige Steinbrücke. Sie wurde 1828 von den Franzosen gebaut und ersetzte die vorherige hölzerne Konstruktion. Geöffnet ist sie jeden Tag (außer Montag) von 08.00 – 15.00.Über die Brücke gelalngt man zum Haupttor der Burg. Es stammt aus dem frühen 18. Jh., der zweiten Periode der Venezianischen Besetzung. Die Seiten des Tores sind dekoriert mit korinthischen Ziersäulen, hinter denen Speere

Burg selbst. Dies wird von eine Mauer gleich rechts in zwei Teile unterteilt. Der südliche und größere Teil ist da, wo die Stadt sich befand, bevor die Franzosen sie versetzten. Man kann sich nur schwer vorstellen, dass die Bevölkerung, die in diesen Mauern lebte, die des heutigen Methoni noch übertraf. Es musste ein überfülltes und unhygienisches Leben gewesen sein, und es ist nicht übera-schend, dass die Franzosen beschlossen, die Stadt zu verlegen.

Jetzt gibt es nur noch wenige Gebäude der alte Stadt, die noch erhalten sind und das leere Innere der Burg wird bestimmt von Überresten Türkischer Bäder und einer neueren Orthodoxen Kirche. Eine Granitsäule genau neben dem Tor ist von umstrittener Herkunft, aber es scheint, als wurde sie in Gedenken an Giovanni Bembo im 1494 aufgestellt worden. Man sagt, dass das merkwürdige Gebäude mit dem pyramidenförmigen Dach im Westen, das restauriert wurde, eine Waffenkammer ist. Die östlichen Mauern der Burg enthalten ein Tor zum Hafen. Die südlichste Mauer der Burg, die zum Meer ragt, wird durchbrochen von einem eindrucksvollen Meerestor, das kürzlich restauriert wurde. Dies führt hinaus zu einem Damm, der zum achteckigen Turm, dem sogenannten Bourtzi Turm führt, der auf einer kleinen Felsinsel thront.

seems to have been put up in commemoration of Giovanni Bembo in 1494. The odd pyramid-roofed building to the west, which has been restored, is said to be an armoury. The eastern walls of the castle include a gate into the harbour. The southernmost wall of the castle, jutting out to sea, is breached by an impressive sea gate that has also been recently restored. This leads out to a causeway that takes you to the octagonal tower perched on a rocky islet that is known as the Bourtzi tower. The dividing wall near the main gate that enters the central area of the fortifi-cation is pierced by another, single gate. This leads from the ‘habitable’ side of the fortress to a side, both above and on the bastions, built purely for defence. The best way to explore this is to follow the path to a building identified as old barracks, and then find the staired tunnel that leads off above it to the west. You will find a series of fortifications and tunnels with cunningly-sited cannon holes that eventually lead back to the French bridge at the main entrance gate to the castle.

Horse Riding, Φοινικούντα : Η σχολή ιππασίας Katja’s Golden Horses έχει δύο κέντρα. Κάθε πρωί από τις 9:30 -11:30 προσφέρονται βόλτες με γαιδουράκια για τα παιδιά και (και ενήλικες!) στην παραλία του Ανεμόμυλου δίπλα στο κάμπινγκ Θίνες , πιο κάτω στην παραλία από το Alpha Watersports καθημερινά εκτός από Τρίτη. Εκτός από τα προαναφερθέντα ταξίδια με βάρκα που παρέχουν μια θαυμάσια εμπειρία για κολύμπι και κατάδυση με αναπνευστήρα, υπάρχουν στην περιοχή και αρκετές άλλες δραστηριότητες. Οι ακόλουθες απέχουν μόνο 10 λεπτά οδικώς από οποιοδήποτε θέρετρο διαμονής.

Fini Divers, Φοινικούντα. Για εκείνους που προτιμούν να εξερευνήσουν την τοπική ακτογραμμή και τα νησιά ατομικά, το κέντρο Fini Divers ενοικιάζει μικρές βάρκες με εξωλέμβια μηχανή και τέντα, χωρητικότητας 7 ατόμων. Alpha Watersports, Φοινικούντα : Το κέντρο γουίντ –σέρφιν στην παραλία του Ανεμόμυλου ενοικιάζει μια ποικιλία από σανίδες, καγιάκ και σανίδες κωπηλασίας που στέκεσαι όρθιος,παρέχει μαθήματα και διαθέτει ένα καταμαράν. Η πρόσβαση γίνεται από το χωριό είτε από ένα στενό δρομάκι που ελίσσεται μεσα από το παλιό τμήμα του χωριού ή από ένα μονοπάτι που περνά από τον κάβο και μετά κατηφορίζει προς την παραλία ή ακόμα επιστρέφοντας στην πρώτη στροφή αριστέρα στην ταμπέλα “Anemomi-los Camping”. www.alpha-watersports.de

στήλη ακριβώς δίπλα στην πύλη είναι αμφιλεγόμενης προέλευσης, αλλά φαίνεται ότι χτίστηκε εκεί στην μνήμη του Τζιοβάνι Μπέμπο το 1494. Το ιδιαιτερης όψης κτίσμα με στέγη σε μορφή πυραμίδας προς τα δυτικά, το οποίο έχει αναπαλαιωθεί, λέγεται ότι ήταν οπλοστάσιο. Τα ανατολικά τείχη του κάστρου περιλαμβάνουν μια πύλη προς τα λιμάνι. Τα δυτικά είναι τα λιγότερο εντυπωσιακά εξαιτίας του γεγονότος ότι τα πλοία δεν μπορούν να πλησιάσουν κοντά τους.

Το νοτιότερο τείχος του κάστρου που προεξέχει στη θάλασσα, είναι διαιρεμένο από μια εντυπωσιακή πύλη προς την θάλασσα, που έχει επίσης πρόσφατα ανακαινιστεί, και βγάζει σε ένα υπερυψωμένο δρόμο που σε φέρνει σε ένα οκταγωνικό πύργο, κουρνιασμένο σ΄ ένα βραχώδες νησάκι γνωστό ως Μπούρτζι. Σ αυτό το σημείο σφαγιάστηκαν οι τελευταίαοι επιζώντες της τούρκικης εισβολής το 1500. Η μεσοτοιχία κοντά στην κύρια πύλη που οδηγεί στην κεντρική περιοχή του φρουρίου διαπερνάται από την κατοικημένη πλευρά του φρουρίου σε μια πλευρά πάνω από το προπύργιο, φτιαγμένη ειδικά για άμυνα. Ο καλύτερος τρόπος για εξερεύνηση είναι ακολουθώντας το μονοπάτι προς ένα κτίσμα που ορίζεται ως παλιός στρατώνας και μετά το τούνελ με τα σκαλιά που οδηγεί από πάνω του προς τα δυτικά, καταλήγοντας σε μια σειρά από φρούρια και τούνελ, με έξυπνα στημένες τρύπες για κανόνια, που τελικά οδηγούν στην Γαλλική γέφυρα της κύριας πύλης εισόδου του κάστρου.

Αγίου Μάρκου. Μετά από το πέρασμα της πύλης υπάρχει μια απότομη αριστερή στροφή, ένα αμυντικό μέτρο, που οδηγεί ανάμεσα σε δύο

τείχη και μέσα σε δύο ακόμα πύλες. Το καστρο χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη από ένα τοίχο. Το νοτιότερο και μεγαλύτερο τμήμα είναι εκεί όπου βρισκόταν η πόλη πριν την μεταφέρουν οι Γάλλοι. Σήμερα υπάρχουν λίγα κτίσματα της παλιάς πόλης και το άδειο εσωτερικό του κάστρου σημαδεύεται από τα ερείπια των Τούρκικών λουτρών και μια πιο πρόσφατη Ορθόδοξη εκκλησία. Μια γρανιτένια

Μεθώνη

Η ίδια η πόλη της Μεθώνης, συσπειρωμένη γύρω από τα τείχη του κάστρου, είναι ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστη με αρκετές μικρές σκιερές πλατείες για να κάτσεις και να βλέπεις τον κόσμο να περνά. Υπάρχει μια πλατιά αμμουδερή παραλία που οδηγεί στο κάστρο και στα ανατολικά γίνεται στενότερη με ένα μείγμα άμμου και μεγάλων βοτσάλων. Πίσω από αυτή βρίσκεται το δημοτικό καμπινγκ ενώ τα περισσότερα καταλύματα μπορούν να βρεθούν κοντά στο κάστρο. Εκτός από το κάστρο η Μεθώνη προσφέρει και κάποιες άλλες τοποθεσίες ιστορικού ενδιαφέροντος,όπως δύο καλοσυντηρημένα Βενετσιάνικα πηγάδια,ένα στο κάθε άκρο της πόλης.

Το πρώτο στα αριστερά όπως μπαίνεις στη Μεθώνη , είναι στην πλατεία Λιμαριζίων,ενώ το άλλο είναι κοντά στο κάστρο στην πλατεία Συγγρού. Μπορείς επίσης να δεις τα ερείπια της Καποδιστριακής Σχολής , ενός άλλοτε όμορφου κτιρίου που περιείχε ένα από τα πρώτα σχολεία που χτίστηκαν μετά τον Ελληνικό Πόλεμο της Ανεξαρτησίας,αν ακολουθήσεις την οδό Καποδίστρια από τον κεντρικό δρόμο προς την πόλη. Μπροστά από το σχολείο είναι η τελευταία από τις παλιές γέφυρες που διασχίζουν τον ποταμό Σιλόσο. Παλιά υπήρχαν τρεις, αλλά κατέρρευσαν και αντικαταστάθηκαν τον 20ο αιώνα με την τελευταία να βρίσκεται υπό αναστήλωση.

Το κάστρο

Τα τείχη αυτού του οικοδομήματος έχουν μακριά ιστορία. Η είσοδος στο φρούριο γίνεται από μια κομψή πέτρινη γέφυρα, η οποία χτίστηκε από τους Γάλλους το 1828 και αντικατέστησε την πρώτη ξύλινη κατασκευή. Ευθεία μετά την γέφυρα βρίσκεται η κύρια είσοδος του κάστρου, η οποία χρονολογείται τον 18ο αιώνα, κατά την διάρκεια της 2ης περιόδου της Ενετικής κατοχής. Η γέφυρα διασχίζει μια εντυπωσιακή μεγάλη τάφρο. Ο Πιέτρο Κασόλα, επισκέφτηκε την Μεθώνη το 1494 και γράφει ότι “ μια μεγάλη τάφρος ανοίγεται τώρα, η οποία όταν τελειώσει θα είναι εκπληκτικό καλλιτέχνημα “Στα δεξιά της γέφυρας βρίσκεται το προπύργιο του πυροβολικού , χτισμένο υπό τις διαταγές του Ενετού κυβερνήτη Τζιοβάνι Μπέμπο το 1460,ενώ στα αριστερά υπάρχει ένα μεταγενέστερο, κατασκευασμένο από τον Αντόνιο Λορεντάν το 1714. Στα τείχη του προπυργίου μπορούμε να δούμε το έμβλημα του Λιονταριόυ του

Νησιά Οινούσσες και βόλτες με βάρκα.

Το σύμπλεγμα των νησιών που κυριαρχούν στον ορίζοντα και από την Φοινικούντα και από την Μεθώνη είναι γενικά γνωστό ως Νησιά των Οινουσσών. Αποτελούνται από τέσσερα κύρια νησιά, από ανατολή προς Δύση : το Βενέτικο, τη Σχίζα, την Αγία Μαρίνα και τη Σαπιέντζα. Παρόλο που η απογραφή του 2011 έδειξε ότι κατοικούν επτά άτομα στην Σαπιέντζα και δύο στην Σχίζα στην πραγματικότητα είναι ακατοίκητα. Καμία επίσκεψη σ΄αυτό το τμήμα της Μεσσηνίας δεν είναι ολοκληρωμένη χωρίς μια βόλτα με βάρκα προς εξερεύνησή τους. Αν θέλετε να τους συναντήσετε προσωπικά, βρίσκονται στα αντίστοιχα λιμάνια, σύμφωνα με τα ονόματα των πλοιάριών τους. Στην Φοινικούντα

ψάξτε για το “ BEBIS “ (Μπέμπης) και στη Μεθώνη για το “ BALKAN “ (Μπάλκαν). Έχουν και οι δύο παρόμοια δρομολόγια και είναι πολύ ευέλικτοι στο τι προσφέρουν , από σύντομες κρουαζιέρες μέχρι ημερήσιες εκδρομές. Τα πλοιάριά τους χωράνε περίπου 15 άτομα και προσφέρουν δροσερά ποτά και φρούτα. Τα πιο δημοφιλή ταξιδάκια είναι σε ερημικές παραλίες στα νησιά ή στην μη προσβάσιμη παραλία Μαράθι, στην ηπειρωτική χώρα. Ακολουθεί μια σύντομη περίληψη του τι έχει να προσφέρει το κάθε νησί : Το μεγαλύτερο νησί των Οινουσσών είναι η Σχίζα, 12 τετρ. χιλ. Το πιο ενδιαφέρον χαρακτηριστικο του είναι ένα σήστημα σπηλαίων, γνωστό ως “ Μαύρη Τρύπα “ , όπου έχουν ανακαλυφθεί προιστορικά κομμάτια αγγείων. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος είναι ανεξερεύνητο και η πρόσβαση είναι πολύ δύσκολη. Στα δυτικά τις

Σχίζας βρίσκεται το μικρότερο νησί της Αγίας Μαρίνας όπου υπάρχει η ομώνυμη σύγχρονη εκκλησία και που ανήμερα της γιορτής της στις 17 Ιουλίου ξεχυλίζει από προσκυνητές από την ηπειρωτική χώρα.

Άλλα μικρότερα νησιά που απαρτίζουν τις Οινούσσες, είναι η Βόμβα και τα Δύο Αδέλφια, που περιβάλλουν την Σαπιέντζα. Η Σαπιέντζα είναι το πιο ενδιαφέρον και με μεγαλύτερη επισκεψιμότητα

νησί. Παλιά υπήρχε ένα μοναστήρι Βενεδικτίνων στο νησί, του οποίου όμως τα ερείπια εχουν εξαφανιστεί. Στο σημείο αυτό υπεγράφη η συνθήκη παραχώρησης της Μεθώνης και της Κορώνης από τους Φράγκους στους Ενετούς το 1209.

Η θάλασσα γύρω από το νησί έχει πιο αρχαία ιστορία , με πολλά ναυαγισμένα πλοία γύρω του. Στα βόρεια του νησιού μπορούμε ακόμα να δούμε σε βάθος μια Ρωμαική σαρκοφάγο,γεγονός που το καθιστά υπέροχο μέρος για κατάδυση με αναπνευστήρα.Το νησί φιλοξενεί δυο είδη ζώων σε κίνδυνο. Το πρώτο από αυτά είναι το κρι κρι ή αλλιώς το Κρητικό αγριοκάτσικο. Τα ζώα αυτά μεταφέρθηκαν εδώ από το φυσικό τους περιβάλλον, από τα Λευκά Όρη της Κρήτης, προκειμένου να διατηρηθεί η ύπαρξή τους. Είναι καφέ με μια πιο σκούρα δέσμη γύρω από τον λαιμό τους, έχουν στριφογυριστά κέρατα και είναι άπιαστα στο δάσος.

Τα αρσενικά είναι επίσης καφέ αλλά με ανοιχτό χρώμα , μπαλώματα και μεγάλα κέρατα σαν του κριαριού,ενώ τα θηλυκά μοιάζουν με μικρά ελάφια. Το καλύτερο μέρος για να τα δει κανείς είναι στην θαυμάσια μικρή παραλία

Άμμος, στην βόρεια ακτή του νησιού. Ένας όμορφος φάρος ύψους 4μ,.που χτίστηκε από τους Βρετανούς τη δεκαετία του 1890,υψώνεται στην νότια ακτή της Σαπιέντζας.. Νοτιοανατολικά του σημείου , βρίσκεται το Φρέαρ των Οινουσσών, ένα από τα βαθύτερα σημεία της Μεσογείου στα 5,121μ.,οπότε δεν αποτελεί και τόσο καλό σημείο για κατάδυση με αναπνευστήρα.

Φοινικούντα και Μεθώνη Ο δρόμος που συνδέει τη Φοινικούντα με τη Μεθώνη, μεσα σε μόνο 10 λεπτά, σε φερνη από παραλία σε παραλία, από λόφο σε λόφο, με το τοπίο συνεχώς να αλλάζει και κάθε στροφή να αποκαλυπτη ακομα μια εκπληκτική θέα. Είναι η υπεροχη νοτιοανατολικη ακτη της Πυλιακής ΜεσσηνίαςΚαι τα δύο χωριά έχουν τις ρίζες τους στα αρχαία χρόνια, καθώς και στα δύο γίνεται μνεία στο έργο του Παυσανία “ Ελλάδος Περιήγησις ”, που γράφτηκε το 2ο μ.Χ. αιώνα. Τα τελευταία χρόνια όμως έχουν γίνει εξαιρετικά δημοφιλή για τους τουρίστες για λίγο

διαφορετικούς λόγους. Στην περίπτωση της Φοινικούντας ένας αριθμός αμμουδερών παραλιών, το συναίσθημα της “ αληθινής Ελλάδας “ και ένα θαλασσινό αεράκι που ευνοεί τα θαλάσσια σπορ , έχουν βοηθήσει να αυξηθεί η δημοφιλικότητά της για τους επισκέπτες.

Παρόλο που και η Μεθώνη έχει αμμουδερή παραλία , η μεσαιωνική ιστορία της πόλης είναι αυτή που την κάνει να ξεχωριζει. Το Βενετσιάνικο κάστρο εντυπωσιαζει πανω στην παραλία και ο πύργος Μπούρτζι έχει γίνει σήμα κατατεθέν για την Μεσσηνία.

Φοινικούντα Η Φοινικούντα είναι ένας ήρεμος τοπος , διατηρώντας τον αέρα ενός ήσυχου ψαροχωριού ακόμα και μέσα στο κατακαλόκαιρο. Ο στενός πεζόδρομος, παράλληλος με την παραλία, σφίζει από ποικιλία καφέ, μπαρ, ταβέρνες και μαγαζιά δώρων,ενώ στο δυτικό άκρο της παραλίας βρίσκεται ένα γραφικό λιμάνι με ψαρόβαρκες που λικνίζονται χαλαρά. Μέσα στο χωριό, καθώς και στα περιχωρα του , υπάρχουν καταλύματα σε καλες τιμες .Για εκείνους που ψάχνουν θέα από ψηλά σε συνδυασμό με δροσερό αεράκι υπάρχουν αξιολογες τουριστικες κατοικιες. Υπαρχουν όμως και αρκετά καμπινγκ που προσφερουν καλες υπηρεσιες κατασκηνωσης πανω στην θαλασσα.

Παραλίες Υπάρχουν τέσσερις αμμουδερές παραλίες μέσα και γύρω από το χωριό, όλες τους ευκολα προσβάσιμες. Εξαιτίας αυτού του γεγονότος,ακόμα και στην ακμή του καλοκαιριού, δεν υπάρχει συνωστισμός.Η κύρια παραλία

του χωριού, όπου οι καφετέριες βλέπουν τη χρυσή άμμο, είναι πολύ δραστήρια προς το τέλος του λιμανιού,ενώ, αν προτιμάτε, το αντίθετο άκρο της είναι πιο ήσυχο. Στα ανατολικά είναι η “ Λίγος Άμμος “, μια μικρή σε σχήμα κολπίσκου παραλία και λίγο πιο πέρα είναι η “ Λούτσα “ , εύκολα προσβάσιμες οδικώς. Στα δυτικά βρίσκεται η “ Μακριά Άμμος “ , μια λωρίδα τελειότητας 4 χιλιομέτρων, επίσης γνωστή ως Ανεμόμυλος, καθώς η περιοχή φημίζεται για τους συνεχείς ανέμους και αποτελεί αγαπημένο μέρος για τους λάτρεις του γουιντ-σερφιν.

Το αεράκι συνήθως φτάνει εδώ από τα βόρειοδυτικά, δηλαδή από την ξηρά, γεγονός που διατηρεί τη θάλασσα ήρεμη. Ένα ακόμα πλεονέκτημα είναι το γεγονός ότι όλες οι παραλίες είναι πολύ ρηχές ,άρα πολύ ασφαλείς για να παίζουν μικρά παιδιά.
