It is a great pleasure for me to pay a visit to Canada this fall. Finland and Canada are likeminded countries that share common values and celebrate important milestones in 2017. The current year marks the 150th anniversary of Canada and the first centenary of independence for Finland. I wish to warmly congratulate Canada on this occasion.
I believe there is a lot of untapped potential still to be explored in our bilateral trade and investments. In a rapidly changing world, our shared interest in the Arctic, sustainable development and innovation brings us closer each other and forms an excellent base for new partnerships.
Signed in October 2016, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union and Canada is the most ambitious trade deal negotiated by the EU so far. It will boost mutual trade and create new opportunities for business both in Finland and in Canada. It will facilitate exports of goods and services and will particularly help smaller companies to cut their trading costs. The Agreement will provide additional momentum to trade and cooperation between our countries.

The Finnish economy is one of the most competitive in the world. Our private sector is in the forefront in the adoption of new technology and culture of innovation.
It gives me a great pleasure to be accompanied by a business delegation consisting of leading Finnish companies representing world-class knowhow and expertise in bioeconomy and renewable enrgy. These companies represent some of the best Finland has to offer. The size of the delegation shows that there is a great interest to do business and to invest in Canada. This visit provides us with an excellent opportunity to further deepen our commercial relations.
I strongly believe that Finland has a lot to offer Canada and the Finnish delegation is looking forward to fruitful and interesting days ahead in Toronto, Thunder Bay and Montreal.

To succeed in a constantly changing world, one has to change
as well. Finland has reinvented itself in just one short century
– and we are still at it. Our national character and Northern
heritage have boosted us to the top of all kinds of country
rankings: a forerunner in bioenergy and a true innovator
in waste-to-energy, just to name a few. We are certain that
Canada can benefit from our Arctic know-how and innovative
solutions that pave the way into circular economy.
Finland - over 50 years of biomass expertise Finland is Europe’s most heavily forested country with 86% of
its land area covered by forest. The harsh northern climate, long
distances and the structure of the forest industry were the key
drivers to Finland becoming a global leader in the utilization
of wood-based biomass for energy production. Rich in forest
resources rather than fossil fuels, Finland has invested heavily
on wide-ranging bioenergy R&D&I since the late 1970s.
Even though the surface area of Finland is roughly a third
of the size of Ontario, we sustainably harvest double the
amount of wood for the needs of our bioeconomy sector
each year. In Finland, annual forest use is 60 million cubic
metres with room for additional use due to sustainable smart
forestry practices. Smart forestry practices have enabled the
development of world leading forest industries. According to
Bioenergy Connection (2013), Finland is a pioneer in forest
management and regulatory policies, and a world leader in
forestry, conservation practices and the wood industry.
Finnish bioenergy solutions like small-scale harvesters,
chippers, biomass heating systems, combined heat and
power plants for public buildings etc. suit very well the needs
of off-grid locations and other towns and villages located
next to biomass resources. With Finnish solutions supported
WHY FINLAND by comprehensive know-how transfer and training, it is
possible not only to reduce dependency on diesel and avoid
skyrocketing energy costs but also to generate new jobs.
Solutions for the whole W2E value chain Finland has a long tradition in utilizing waste in energy
production. For decades, the waste and side streams in the
forest industry have been successfully utilized in energy
generation. In addition to wood-based biomass, Finland has
produced leading technologies for power plants that utilize
waste as feedstock. The plants typically use mixed waste from,
for example, households, shops and industry to produce heat
and electricity to local residential areas and cities.
The Finnish solutions cover the whole value chain from
efficient waste collection and logistics to pre-treatment and
energy conversion: Finnish companies possess expertise in
waste minimizing, raw material reuse and recycling as well
as energy recovery and final disposal. Finland also offers
technology for combined heat and power (CHP) production,
the most advanced solution being combining CHP to district
heating and cooling systems.
Advanced biofuels Biofuels – or fuels from renewable sources —are a growing
form of bioenergy in Canada. There are provincial renewable
fuel mandates in effect in various provinces.
Finland is one of the world’s leaders in advanced, 2nd generation
biofuels made from different waste streams. Renewable
diesel is produced from waste and residues in a process which
accepts feedstock of poor quality e.g. animal and fish fat, used
cooking oil and residues form vegetable oil refining. Tall oil, a
residue from pulp production is another possible raw material.
Bioethanol is produced from recycled waste in a process which
typically uses various types of food waste. Lignocellulosic
biomass can also be used for bioethanol production.

The Team Finland network promotes Finland’s external economic relations, the internationalization of Finnish businesses, Finland’s brand abroad and investments to Finland. The network aims to bring all key authorities and organizations under one umbrella, improve the efficiency of their cooperation, and provide customers with an easy access to a wide range of services.
The Team Finland network consists of more than 70 local teams around the world and brings together all Finnish authorities, publicly funded organizations and other key parties with ties to Finland. At home, the core members of the Team Finland network are the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Culture - together with agencies operating under their guidance. A network of regional contact persons has also been set up at the national level.
Team Finland activities are steered by the Government and the Government Program, especially the key project on competitiveness and employment. The implementation of the Government Program and the realization of the objectives set are reviewed annually. The Steering Group meets about four times a year and, in support of the Government, sets the strategic objectives for Team Finland’s activities. The Steering Group is led by the Prime Minister and consists of the Minister of Economic Affairs, the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, the permanent secretaries of ministries and influential business and industry leaders.
