planners and installers of building technology play a vital role. Even strict

fire regulations provide no guarantee against fire. The greatest risk is not

caused by the building itself, but by technical and electrical equipment.

More than 90% of fire victims and approximately 70% of property

damage are not the direct result of the fire but of the hazardous and

toxic smoke produced by the fire. So, in addition to avoiding and

combating fire, the main aim is to prevent the formation and dispersion

of smoke gas.

The most important tasks of preventative fire protection are the

saving of human life and minimising of property damage. To do this,

above all it is necessary to guarantee the functional integrity of the

fire-protection equipment, the usability of the escape routes, and access

by the emergency services.

Building installations are to be laid out, built, altered and maintained in

such a way that the occurrence of fire and the spreading of fire and

smoke are prevented, and in the event of a fire it will be possible to

save people and animals and fight the fire effectively.

As a result of federalism, building law in Germany is the responsibility of

the Federal States. In a joint working group (ARGEBAU), the Federal min-

istries responsible for the building industry are drawing up sample draft

laws which can, depending on the Federal State, and with more or fewer

amendments, become valid as a law, regulation or guideline for that

State. § 14* of the standard building regulations (MBO) defines the basis

for fire protection:

The requirements of the building regulations and Federal State

building regulations are supplemented by various decrees, by-laws,

technical building regulations and general technical standards. In addi-

tion, lack of fire protection is considered to be an intentionally

concealed defect with a 30-year term of liability. Furthermore, planners

and contractors have a legal duty to implement safety precautions during

the entire period of use of a building. In the event of physical injuries

(fatality), the full extent of §319* (endangerment in construction) of the

German Criminal Code applies, and substantial fines or even imprison-

ment can be imposed on those responsible.

Legal requirements | Fire protection

The state building regulations (LBO) differentiate between:

• Buildings of normal type or usage

(residential and buildings of comparable usage)

• Buildings of special type or usage

(industrial, public assembly or hospitals ...)

DIN 4102 defines the requirements in respect of the quality of walls

and ceilings for fire resistance classes. The specified fire resistance class

depends on the use and class of the building (see also table on page 07).

Additional regulations apply to "buildings of normal type or

usage" including for public assembly, mobile shops, and hospital, school

or industrial buildings.

The fire behaviour of building materials is influenced by the type,

design, surface, mass, material combinations and processing technology.

Building materials are grouped into classes A or B according to their fire

The fire-resistance period is the minimum time in minutes during

which a building component exposed to fire must not exceed an average

rise in temperature of 140 K (max. 180 K at individual sites) on the side

not exposed to the fire (acc. to DIN 4102-2).

The fire-resistance period is divided into the following classes:

F0/30 fire-retardant

F60 extremely fire-retardant

F90/120/180 fire-resistant / extremely fire-resistant

KAISER has Europe-wide approvalfor fire-sealings!ETA-11/0188The German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) has officially confirmed it:

KAISER fire sealings are perfect for professional electrical installations in fire-

protection walls. As a brand-name manufacturer of electrical installation sys-

tems, KAISER has been awarded the Europe-wide European Technical

Approval for its innovative fire sealings.

In addition to the successful fire test - approval ETA-11/0188 - safe, easy,

clean installation of the KAISER sealing is the principal factor for successful

positioning in the electrical trade. These sealings are easily installed using

standard tools - with no smoothing and filling at all. There is no need for spe-

cial training.

The fire sealings are certified for installation in drywalls, solid masonry and con-

crete construction walls. Non-destructive fitting of additional cables is easy.

The European Technical Approval applies to all three KAISER fire sealing sys-

tems i.e. for cable, conduit and box sealings. Each of the tested products is

given the wall's fire resistance class and does not release any hazardous

materials. This means that in every respect, KAISER fire sealings make possi-

ble fast, professional and safe sealing in fire-protection walls.

Walls and ceilings.DIN 4102.

In principle, fire-protection walls or ceilings must not have any open-

ings. However, if these are required to enable the building to be used as

specified, covers for windows, channels or installations must be fitted

with fire resistance lasting at least 30 to 90 minutes (e.g. F90 / T90 / S90).

Incorrectly executed openings would considerably weaken the fire section

separation.

Fire-protection walls with fire resistance class F30-F180 acc. to

DIN 4102-4 are single or double shell, non load-bearing, internal separa-

tor walls with wall thicknesses of 100 mm and above, insulating material

acc. to DIN 4102-17, and 2 x 12.5 mm plasterboard panels. According to

DIN 4102, the opposing installation of conventional cavity wall boxes is

not allowed and the installation of individual boxes is only permitted to a

limited extent. The customer must fit some form of sheath, e.g. with plas-

ter, fibre silicate or similar.

satisfy these requirements.

• Construction type I, II, III

Sub-ceilings below rough ceilings in accordance with DIN 4102-4 of

construction type I, II, III. The ceiling construction - rough ceilings and

sub-ceiling - provides the required fire resistance.

Fire-protection ceilings in accordance with DIN 4102 are either inde-

pendent ceiling constructions or suspended ceilings used with ceilings of

construction type I, II or III (concrete ceilings, brick ceilings). From fire-pro-

tection class F30 upwards, DIN 4102 requires a closed visible surface.

Openings, for example for luminaires, must be equipped with a suitable

sealing.

FlamoX® installation housings from KAISER (see page 18) are fire-

protection housings specially developed for F30 ceilings.

In the event of a fire, KAISER AFS-technology maintains the fire-pro-

tection class of ceilings and walls, even with opposing installation without

encasing. The ready-to-fit systems with AFS-technology guarantee certi-

fied security and problem-free installation.

AFS – Active Fire Stop. This technology guarantees preventative, active

fire protection. Whether a fire starts from above, below, the front or the

back, the fast-acting insulation layer in housings and boxes reacts imme-

diately, generating foam which reliably seals the installation opening. The

fire-protection class of the ceiling is retained up to F30 and of the wall up

to F90. This successfully prevents the spread of smoke and fire.

Without encasing, and with its certified safety levels, the HWD90

lets you install switches or sockets in fire-protection walls without chang-

ing the fire-protection class. Even opposing box installation and retrofits

can be carried out without any problems. Installation is as easy as with a

cavity wall box.

If there is a fire, the integrated insulation layer used in KAISER AFS-tech-

nology reacts automatically in the shortest possible time. The material

generates foam and reliably seals the installation opening in the fire-pro-

tection wall.

HWD 90 boxes are ideal for front fitting in installation shafts. They

guarantee that fire resistance class 130 is maintained.

HWD 90 boxes can also be retrofitted. Installation takes place via a

wall opening through the shaft wall. Insulation is fitted in accordance

with the fire resistance class, and the cut-out is closed before installation

of the cavity wall box.

The easy fitting of HWD cavity wall boxes in shaft walls and using

standard tools is an efficient, secure alternative to complicated, time-con-

suming encasing from the rear.

The electronics box HWD90 creates safe, certified, fire-protection room

separation. Fires spread more slowly. The period of fire resistance up to

F90 is guaranteed. The bridge creates additional installation space for

electronic components. The easy removal of the bridge allows fast, easy

replacement of the electronic components at any time. When the remov-

able cover is used together with the removable bridge, connection and

insertion of the components and cables is easy. Removal of the bridge and

the cover allows easy connection and insertion of components and cables,

and also use as a double box.

Screw fixing ensures fast, easy mounting. Additional encasing is not nec-

essary, so the electronics box HWD90 can also be retrofitted. Variable

Sealings in fire-protection walls are needed when cables or conduits

are fed through walls with a specific fire resistance class. To retain the fire

resistance class, expert sealing of the opening is needed to prevent fire or

smoke from spreading.

KAISER's tried-and-tested AFS-technology immediately ensures that

the KAISER sealings intumesce and seal the wall opening against fire and

smoke. This guarantees that the wall's fire protection class is maintained.

Fire protection | Cable and conduit seal

It is easy to fit the cable and conduit seal with just a few simple actions.

Make the installation opening using a suitable cutter and insert the flex-

ible seal. For retrofitting, open the seal and push it over the existing cable

or conduit. In each case, up to three cable or conduit seals can be

arranged as a group.

attachment equipment. A Ø 20 mm drill hole is needed for the cable sealing

system LS 90. The cable is then fed through the installation opening and the

cable sealing placed around the cable and pressed into the installation open-

ing - finished!

The conduit sealing system RS 90 can be fitted just as easily and quickly as

the cable sealing system LS 90. The installation opening must be made with

a Ø 32 mm drill. To adapt the conduit sealing system RS 90 to the installation

opening, first remove the pull-off lug. Then feed the electrical installation

conduit through the installation opening, place the conduit sealing around the

conduit and press into the opening - finished!

Fire protection | Box sealing system DS 90

The box sealing system DS 90 consists of two parts which are simply

placed on each other and locked. The sealing cylinder, which uses AFS-

technology to close the wall, is inserted into the Ø 74 mm cut opening

and easily fitted, like a KAISER cavity wall box. The sealing element is then

placed round the cables, pushed onto the sealing cylinder and, by means

of the bayonet fitting, sealed with a right-hand turn. An audible click can

be heard. This process ensures secure room separation.

For the non-destructive addition of more cables, the sealing element can

be opened and more cables added in a moment. The box seal can be

closed again without additional sealing.

Fire protection | Box sealing system DS 90

The box sealing system DS 90 / 120 mm makes possible the secure, visible

and certified fire-protection sealing of cable and conduit feed-through in EI30

- EI90 fire-protection walls. It allows the sealing of a large number of sheathed

cables up to a diameter of 29 mm, and also for electrical installation conduits

up to M63. The two-part sealing cylinder and the hinged sealing element also

make installation possible when cables or conduits are already in place. The

extension of the sealing element with the cooling ribs achieves and guarantees

ordered bundling and optimal sealing for smoke-proof room separation by

means of the special foam inserts. The extra-large sealing collar ensures smoke-

proof room separation even when openings are not cut exactly. For fast, clean

and easy installation, a 120 mm opening is required into which the sealing

cylinder is inserted and fixed with tried-and-tested FX4 technology. Finally, snap

the sealing element onto the sealing cylinder using the bayonet fitting.

The box sealing system DS 90 can be installed in all concrete and masonry

walls without the need for special fire-protection materials. All that is needed is

an 82 mm Ø drilling hole and standard fixing materials such as plaster, mortar

or fast cement.

Fire protection | Solid wall

The box sealing system DS 90 / 120 mm is as easy to fit as the box seal-

ing system DS 90. It can also be inserted into an installation opening using all

standard fixing materials. The installation needs a 150 mm Ø core drilling hole.

The sealing collar ensures clean room separation.

With mineral wool acc. to DIN 4102-17, the installation resists a fire up

to fire-resistance class F60, and with Rockwool/Termarock 100 up to fire-

resistance class F90.

Without mineral wool, the installation corresponds to fire-resistance

class F30.

Fitting is easy in accordance with the tried-and-test principle of fast cav-

ity wall installation using KAISER FX4 technology.

The FlamoX® fire-protection housings provide certified safety. KAISER

AFS-technology's fast-acting fire-retardant coating reacts immediately a

fire breaks out and safely fills the housing with foam. Within the shortest

possible time, the ceiling opening is completely closed and the S30 fire

sealing is safe.

The intelligent housing system offers protection against the latent risk

of fire caused by the heat from some types of lamps. In suspended ceil-

ings and roof areas, ThermoX® protects the moisture barrier foil and

other surrounding materials against heat-generating halogen lamps and

LED lamps.

In addition to preventative fire protection, the housing provides air-tight

installation room. The integrated transformer flap allows the transformer

to be positioned next to the housing, so the transformer is thermally-pro-

tected.

Optional decor rings with four different surfaces conceal the housing

when it is retrofitted, creating an attractive appearance.

There is a latent risk of danger because the halogen lamps generate a

temperature of over 200°C after a short period of time. This extreme

heat development is dangerous for all surrounding materials in the roof

construction and can lead to a catastrophe for human beings and prop-

erty.

The ThermoX® housing was developed for the installation of halogen

luminaires in wood-panelled and tiled ceilings and also for seamless sub-

ceiling constructions made of plasterboard, mineral fibreboards, MDF and

plywood with double slats and a layer of insulation above. It is ideal for

the installation of luminaires in new buildings, or in buildings which are

being refurbished, for low-voltage or high-voltage or LED lamps. It is ideal

for use in climate-controlled rooms, and prevents dust rings round the

built-in luminaires.

Fireproof and smokeproof walls in ship cabins. Fire-protection technology in shipbuilding.Electrical installations on cruise ships, ferries or yachts must pro-

vide optimal functionality and ensure the safety of the passengers and

crew. Our many years of experience of fire-protection technology in

buildings are now used to deal with the fast installation needs of ship-

yards, cabin builders and the shipping industry. The user now has a fire-

protection box which is very easy to install and prevents - absolutely reli-

ably - the spread of fire and smoke via category B0 to B15 partitions.

KAISER's AFS-technology is also integrated in fire-protection one-gang

boxes for shipbuilding. The fire-retardant coating reacts immediately to

fire and heat, and intumesces so effectively that the cabin wall's fire pro-

tection class is maintained and the escape routes are kept free of smoke.

This is especially important on fully-occupied cruise ships with narrow

corridors.

Mounting of HWD B15 fire-protection boxes is carried out with KAISER's

The certified one-gang boxes are suitable for both metal-clad and

mineral-based shipbuilding walls. They offer maximum safety and satisfy

the requirements of current legislation.

The intelligent fire-protection one-gang boxes for B0 to B15 partitions

react to a fire very quickly. The HWD B15 cavity wall boxes provide screen-

ing on the fire and smoke side of the fire-protection zone and preserve

the B15 function of the fire-protection wall for at least 30 minutes of

flames.

The HWD B15 fire-protection boxes make complicated and heavy

metal encasing unnecessary. The user is guaranteed a certified and fast

installation with standardised working processes.

Combinations of one-gang junction boxes at a standardised combi-

nation distance can easily be created by separating the marked area on

the holding ring. Installation is as easy as for cavity wall boxes.

We offer special solutions for all

types of walls. For example, there are

types for mineral wall constructions

which permit countersinking, and

also FX4 technology for thin boarding

thicknesses from 0.2 to 40 mm.

The fire resistance of cavity wall boxes and casings is tested at

850°C in a glow wire test (without an open flame). It must be shown that

the boxes are self-extinguishing, i.e. if there is a fault in the electrical

installation, a fire cannot be caused because of the cavity wall boxes. In

addition, it is necessary to comply with all the current fire prevention

measures for wall construction.

For cavity wall boxes with the VDE mark, fire resistance is tested and con-

firmed acc. to VDE 0471/ EN 60695-T. 2-10.

Halogen-free cavity wall boxes / Fire-resistance

All KAISER one-gang boxes and casings for cavity wall installation, and

also many accessories, are available as halogen-free articles. They are also

available in white for an individual note.

• Fire-resistant up to 850°C

• Good electrical insulation, impact-proof and pressure-resistant

• No oxygen is combined as a result of chemical reactions

• No corroding materials such as hydrochloric acid gas or hydrogen bro-

mide are released

The fire resistance of cavity wall boxes and casings which bear a VDE mark is tested at 850°C in a glow wire test in accordance with VDE 0471 / DIN EN 60695-2-11.

It must be shown that if electrical installation is faulty, a fire cannot be caused because of the cavity wall boxes. In addition, it is necessary to comply with all the current fire prevention measures for wall construction.
