WHAT WE GOT HERE IS...FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE.Firebase is a man-eater. I am convinced thismagazine seduces the hearts of its mastersand devours them with a voracious appetite.A mere six issues have passed and already

three lovers have been entirely consumed. But I say no more to this wickedness! Thismighty magazine, full of promise and feralcomplexity, shall be tamed. Together withmy accomplished and ever increasingcohort Firebase will become more elegant, distinguished, enlightening, and dare I sayregularly released? Aye, I do!

Dear faithful and new readers both, my

name is Gabriel Schrock. I am the newestsacrificial lamb to be offered up as the editorof Firebase. Ive been on the staff since thesecond issue and have been a gung-ho littlemonkey from the very first day, but now with

my grubby little hands firmly grasping thehelm I hope to do my part in guiding thismagazine to the heights previous editorshave promised.

I will not lie. This responsibility is unnervingto say the least but I refuse to falter in my

mission. I give praise to The God-Emperorthat I am joined by like-minded devotees;we will support each other in the gallantand righteous cause we set for ourselves. Our intention is that Firebase will not justremain great, but that Firebase will becomeillustrious.

Dark Apostle Anthony ReynoldsHorror movies have been

raising the bar on barbarityand revulsion - as of late, theBlack Library has jumpedon this bandwagon and willhopefully continue to doso regarding their Chaosnovels.

After C.L. Werners mucous WarhammerFantasy book Palace of the Plague Lord,

Anthony Reynolds now brings us a new 40kChaos novel.

He presents Chaos and its followers as theyshould be presented: torturing, traitorous, mass murdering and corruptive to both bodyand soul.

Dark Apostle Jarulek and his gang of WordBearers take over the imperial planet ofTanakreg, enslaving the population in orderto force them to build a gigantic tower.Needless to say, in this endeavour he alsoknows to make use of the millions of corpseswhich his attack has left.

An armada of the Imperial Guard and the

Adeptus Mechanicus arrive, hurling theirsoldiers and servitors at the feet of thecorrupt Word Bearers.

In particular, the description of how Defilersand Dreadnoughts are sent into battlebound in chains so making use of the livesof slaves may calm them down, if needed, isvery well thought through.

Anthony Reynolds manages to shed somelight on single characters in the course ofthis meat grinder-like novel, letting themwalk a tightrope between hope and absolutedistress.

All in all, this is a very good novel, its stylebefitting the dark atmosphere of Chaos.Next winters release of Dark Disciple is

something to be sadistically thrilled about.

Only in Death Dan AbnettBrought to us by none otherthan Dan Abnett Only inDeath is the eleventh novelin the Gaunts Ghost series. What will the Tanith First-and-Only encounter thistime? You have every rightto be curious!

The regiment is to explore and occupy anold house in the fortress world of Jago, known as the Hinzerhaus.

Upon arriving, the First-and-Only does notonly have to endure the dust storms of Jago, and the lack of supplies, but also rumours

about eerie sightings. Nothing is as it seemsin the Hinzerhaus, there are noises comingfrom all over and the maps are as good asuseless.

Like this isnt enough to deal with already, the building is smack in the way the BloodPact is using to advance, and the staffdivisions orders are halt until supplies arrive.

A race for life and death ensues.

Once again Dan Abnett makes you say, Thisis the best novel in the Gaunt series. Hefinds a fresh tantalizing plot as well as newcharacter developments every time. Thereader always ends up surprised. You cantput this book down until youve reached theabout the author section.

The Imperial Munitorum Manual Graham McNeill

The Black Librarys Artefactbooks always bear a greatamount of attention to detail.Accordingly, the ImperialMunitorum Manual does too.

This book resembles vintagewritings with its slightly

yellowed pages, its sketches and drawings(unfortunately not all of these are new). To behonest, this book even smells old.

Nine sections all told proceed to explain thehistory of the Departmento Munitorium, theImperial Armys structure, and the equipment

of soldiers and staff. It also elucidatesthe correct way of filling out the easilyunderstandable forms for all requirementsof your daily life on the front, as well as allthe punishments and procedures followingthe incorrect handling of the issueddocuments.

The best part of this book is this: TheDepartmento Munitorum recognises thatwaging combat operations is stressful, but no matter how terrible and brutalthe fighting, there is no excuse for poormanners.

Once again the Black Library proves thattheir background books are more than justplain written words; they are true collectorsitems, not really exciting for the general

reader but a definite must-have for anaficionado!

Imperial Infantrymans UpliftingPrimer, Damocles Gulf Edition Matt Ralphs

Shortly after the release ofthe Imperial MunitorumManual, the Black Libraryprovided us with a secondArtefact book, which isable to top its predecessor. While the design is similar, including yellowed pages and

the distinct smell of old literature, this Primerdelivers a lot more humour in the form ofImperial propaganda, an appropriate design, new art work and very useful tips.

The book contains everything a fresh ImperialGuard recruit needs to know: chapters onpunishment, equipment, command structure, enemies, first aid, tactics, the proper behaviorduring warp passage, and an annex with themost useful prayers for the battle field.

Honestly, it is hard to figure out where to startpraising this book. Not only do the survivaltips range from building a trap to removing

leeches from ones anus, it is also written in avery proficient and humorous style.

The inherent propaganda is unmatched;it constantly provokes the reader to smirk. The Empires antagonists are degraded tothe lowest level of ridiculousness, be theyTyranids, Eldar or Orks. Everyone is putinto perspective. The Tau receive specialattention since this is the Damocles Gulf

    Edition.

The reader finds out what happens toImperial citizens that get involved with theXenos, why the Tau are even bigger filth thanall other races of the Xenos, and with whatkind of inferior technology they try to copythe products of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

A rather impressive piece of advice is, Tauare frightened by thunder.

    Whats left to say?

An Imperial gamer not carrying this opus inhis pocket should be reported immediatelyto his Commissar for due punishment!

Star of Damocles Andy HoareFrom childhood on you are

told not to judge a book byits cover, but maybe I shouldhave forgone this advice justonce. Star of Damocles isone of the weakest novels inthe universe of 40K.

In this second book of the Rogue Traderseries, the Patriarch Lucian Gerrit crosses theDamocles Gulf with his family and a crusadein order to forge ahead into the Tau domain. In the course of this, he is betrayed by partof his family.

Now this sounds like it might be tantalizing, yet unfortunately it is not. Events are linedup one after the other without being givenany depth at all. A few space battles, aconspiracy, and a dash of the mysterious

simply trail one another. Among the latter isthe appearance of an abandoned crusade

space ship in the Warp. Unfortunately, thisevent is in no way satisfactorily described.

The only bright spot within this novelis the entrance of a demonic being intoLucianGerrits ship during the Warp transit. However, this event is cut off far too quickly

    as well.

Since all strands of the plot are left openfor the next episode, this novel leaves thereader feeling unsatisfied. This is not atall part of the high quality series we havebecome accustomed to thanks to WilliamKing or Dan Abnett.

I must confess I was glad when I reached the

books last page because it meant I couldfinally grab another novel.

Descent of Angels Mitchel ScanlonDescent of Angels is novelsix in the Horus Heresy series, yet it does not seem to meshconsistently.

From the viewpoint ofthe young aspiring knightZahariel, Mitchel Scanlon

describes the feudal world Caliban - a worldwhere knightly orders are fighting the greatbeasts that control the forests.

The story is set before the Imperatorslanding on Caliban, allowing us to gaindetailed insight into the knights quests.

War breaks out after Lion ElJonson, the

future Primarch of the Dark Angels, initiates

a gigantic crusade to exterminate the greatbeasts. Some orders consider this a dangerto the old system, therefore an obstaclestanding in his way.

After the crusade has ended, the Imperialtroops land, and the Dark Angels are

founded. Only the youngest aspirantsbecome Space Marines, while the oldknights serve as their leaders.

Scanlon dwells on the issue of the charactersconnections, which will later lead to the DarkAngels fall, a tad too much.

The plot appears to be rushed after theImperators arrival, as though a page

restriction had been imposed upon theauthor.

The existence of Warp beasts and demonsis accepted rather quickly. The topic isapproached in too light-hearted a manner, seeing how the other novels convey greatamounts of skepticism.

This novel would be more suspenseful as aFantasy/40K Crossover like Ben CountersDemon World novel. It would allow thereader greater insight into life on a medievalworld in the 40K universe.

As a Horus Heresy novel however, it leavesa bitter aftertaste, which will hopefully beflushed away with part seven, Dan AbnettsLegion; the history of the Alpha Legion

Legion Dan AbnettI used to know a boy whowatched The Lord of theRings over and over, and inthe scene where Aragornbeheads Lurtz, he alwaysyelled "He did it again!"every time.

That's kind of how I feel when I read DanAbnett's novels.

The 7th volume of the Horus Heresy deliversa new viewpoint, as well as new actorsbehind the Heresy and a view into theactions and motives of the Alpha Legion.

Two years before the Heresy, the 670thImperial Expedition Fleet is fighting onPlanet Nurth. Their crusade has come toa stop: the Nurthene are offering fierceresistance.

It is only after the Astartes of the AlphaLegion arrive that they begin to succeed.

But has the legion just arrived on the planetor have they been there for some time? Andwhy does it seem like Primarch Alpharius is inseveral places simultaneously?

This is where Dan Abnett's new achievementstarts. When reading about Space Marines,we expect smouldering bolters and heroicdeeds. Instead, he brings us Astartes whoseem to be filled with secrets and lies, andwhose agenda is concealed. By doing so, he

completely detracts the readers' attentionfrom the battle field.

There are not many fighting scenes fora 40K novel, the plot focuses on secrets, deception, and lies, and that is exactly whatmakes this novel so refreshingly different.

The Alpha Legion is not the only forcecultivating betrayal and lies. We are

introduced to a new group that areinterested in the humans' affairs, the Cabal, who are trying to acquire information aboutthe Astartes through one of their agents.

I really don't want to go give away too manydetails of the plot because you definitelyhave to enjoy the web of schemes in itsentirety. I would hate to even remotely revealany part.

I'll just say one thing. This book is a thrillerfor all readers who love to uncover a story ofbetrayal and counter-betrayal.

It is suspenseful right until the end; DanAbnett has delivered another fantastic novel!

    He did it again!

    Desert Raiders Lucien Soulban

In this fourth Imperial Guardnovel, Lucien Soulban, scriptwriter of the Dawnof War computer games, presents a heroic epic of theTallarn Desert Raiders andtheir desperate struggle onthe desert planet Khadar.

A regiment is dropped off on the planet

Khadar in response to an emergency signal.

Since the fleet is ordered to a new area ofconflict, the regiment is left on the planet.Problems arise from the start. Not only wasthe regiment supplied with 200 rafts and tons of green camouflage instead of water andsolar plants, it is also made up of enemy tribes.

The 892nd Tallarn consists of the Turenagand the Banna, who have been wrapped upin a blood feud for centuries. Obviously it isnot surprising that all sorts of accidentskeep occurring.

Again and again soldiers are being sent totheir death to buy time for the regiment.

Sentinels are sent out as bait to lure the

Xenos horde away from the Tallarn baseand a desert race until death ensues. Heavysupport squads fire missile upon missileinto the attackers backs until their minedpositions are taken over.

It is only when an alien ship crashes into thedesert sand that they are able to settle theirdifferences. A bigger enemy has landed onKhadar: the Tyranids have arrived.

From this moment on, Lucien Soulbanprovides us with high-speed actionpaired with a mix of honor, courage, anddesperation.

Desert Raiders is a well-written novel. Theauthor supplies entertainment from cover tocover, nothing less should be expected.

The Bell of Lost Souls (http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com) has become one of the mostprominent and well-regarded 40K fansites

on the internet over the past year. Based inAustin, Texas, the Fly Lords of Terra put outa steady stream of fantastic hobby content, such as the 88-page Warhammer 30,000:Battles in the Age of Heresy rulebook;detailing the forces of both Loyalists andTraitors during the Horus Heresy. As well as

including Company-level data sheets foreach of the Legions.

In November, two of the Fly Lords; MontyKerr (mkerr) and Larry Vela (bigred) werekind enough to sit down and do a phoneinterview with FIREBASE about a numberof topics about their site, their interests andtheir contributions to the hobby.

On the response to the site:Monty:Weve been really surprised athow welcome our site has been, and how

much people like our material. We broughta softcover version of our Horus Heresycampaign book along to the BaltimoreGrand Tournament, and universally, we hadpeople asking how do I get a copy of this?

We showed the book to Dave Taylor andJeremy Vetock. Dave Taylor said he wants

two: one for his shelf at home, and oneto chain to his cube at the office, so thatpeople can come by and see it. He doesntwant to lose it! When we talked to Jeremy

Vetock, he said that this is exactly whatthe community needs. Usually, what GWreceives from the community is the sort offeedback they got with Lash of Submission it came back to them in exactly the wrongway. Its always a pleasure for them whenthey put material out to the community, likeApocalypse and the Horus Heresy books, and it comes back better.

Thats what we try to do with the site- take rules and ideas, sending it out to

the community, and having people sendin feedback, and really enjoy the wholeexperience, rather than come up with agame/tournament exploit. People seem toreally be interested so far, and its been agreat experience.

On the articles that helped jump-starttheir sites popularity:Monty:I think there are two areas that really

started to get us going. Some of out first bigarticles were my abusive tactics for WitchHunters and Daemon Hunters. I wrote thembecause I want people talking about thegame. What I found was that, on places likeWarseer, it was volatile discussions abouttactics like this that led to people thinkingabout the rules for the game in a different way.

Ive been playing Witch Hunters and

Daemon Hunters for a long time, and what

I found was that no one really seemed toknow how to play them. Almost every playerused them the wrong way. So, I wrote postson Warseer saying well, heres how you canuse them, here are things you can do, and inthose conversations, we came up with somedirty tricks, like the Vindicare being able totarget friendly models. I think its dirty trickslike that which initially got attention for myarticles. People would fight and argue, butit would get people thinking about howto use those armies. Now, I think we seemore people using Daemonhunters andWitchhunters than they have in the last fiveyears. Weve gotten so many letters frompeople who say that theyve picked up an

Inquisitorial army because of your tactica.

The other big series was Larrys decal sheets. When he started making pre-Heresy decalsheets, and decals for Chapters that didnthave them previously, we got a ton of hits. The pre-Heresy group in particularly isextremely loyal.

Larry:Ive been a player since Rogue Trader,

and pretty much, theres always been a littlesub-culture of pre-Heresy players. I dontwant to congratulate ourselves or anything, but over the past six months, since westarted pushing a lot of pre-Heresy stuff -decals, titans, the Age of Heresy book - therehave been a ton of people starting up pre-Heresy armies. You go on eBay or Warseer, and you find people building and trying tofind old resin Titans. Fundamentally, peoplethink Titans are cool, pre-Heresy is cool, and

I thought Ok, great! I have an interest in it, Ihave these old magazines going back twentyyears now, so lets dredge up all these oldmaterials, all these new novels, and makesomething interesting out of it.

Monty:Thats an important part, too. When

the new novels started coming out, peoplestarted thinking more about the HorusHeresy, and it was almost a coincidence thatthese books started coming out as we werestarting pre-Heresy armies, and a pre-Heresyleague.

Another big article was a two-part articleon Lash of Submission that I wrote. Wewere sent an early playtest copy of the new

Chaos Codex, and we started playing withit on our own, and we started putting thingsup on the blog about out experiencesplaytesting. Lash was probably the hottesttopic weve ever had. Everyone came downon one side or another of the issue, and weactually expected it to break the tournamentscene. In our preview copy, in fact, Lashhad an unlimited range, and one of the few

changes we saw between our copy and thefinal version was giving Lash a 24 range.Hopefully, our discussions online aboutLash were helpful, and we got the designersthinking about the potential for abuse in thatone rule.

On Official rumor sources:Monty:We get our previews the same wayas everyone else leaks. We do have sources

outside of GW, however, and theyve proven

    Interview: Bell of Lost Souls

reliable. One of the biggest arguments wehave, Larry and I, is which rumors do we putup? Which are viable? When you see rumorsup on the blog, its the product of a longdiscussion about what to put out to the public.

Larry:As the site has grown, weve seen a

marked increase in anonymous things thatshow up. People cant resist spilling whatthey have.

Monty:I mean, we chat with the developers, and were on the board for Adepticon, sowell sometimes hear things through thoseconnections, but very rarely is it anythingthat isnt already out there in the community.People think that theres a revolving door

of information coming from GW, but theresreally not. The official line is very tight. Wefind out more from the retailers, or peoplewho overhear or see things than we do fromany official source, by far.

I mean, at first, when we started the site, wethought there must be an official leak, and thought Oh, if we get that big, theyllcontact us and say Hey, you should tell

people about this new Ork Codex, butwe dont get anything out of official GWsources. Theyre very good about that. Wetalk to Dave Taylor every few weeks, and hetells us nothing about whats coming.

As an example, when we sat down withJeremy Vetock, he was really eager to talkto us, which was great. We tried to pry someinformation out of him, and he finally told usfive things, and we thought Great! Weve got

these exclusive rumors! Ten minutes later, hegets up in front of a room full of people andtells them the same five things! He wouldnttell us anything he couldnt tell everyone.

We know the Studio is reading us now, though. When we interview people, theyre

familiar with our site. People check our siteevery day, which is really satisfying.

The Genesis of the Bell of Lost Souls:Monty:Weve been doing campaigns for tenyears, but we might as well have not donethem, because all we have is memories, andsome weird models that well never use again. So, the site really started just for us, as a wayto keep a record of all the things weve done.

Really, the most surprising thing, for us, wasthat anyone would read what we do. To me, itseems like itd be really tedious, like listeningto someone talk about their D&D character Oh, yknow, thats great that you had areally good game, and you beat that guy. But,people like reading battle reports. People likereading our opinions on the game.

Really, though, its all Larry. The wholesites Larry. Weve got something like fourcontributors, but all of us added together multiplied, even dont do as much asLarry. This is definitely his passion. I do thetactica, and Brad (Bulwark) will be integralonce the Ork Codex comes out. He just livesand breathes Orks. Hes our conversion guy,and just builds crazy stuff.

Larry:Brad is the Ork MacGyver. If you dump

out all the junk your desk or garage, Brad willcome by and say Whats that?, and nextweek, itll be a Gargant.

Monty:So, weve got three of us who aresort of the main crew. We all love the hobbypart of it, though, and love campaigns.

On the Sites Attitude Towards GW:Larry:One of the first decisions we hadto make was, Do we go Forum, or noForum?, and I think we fundamentally madethe right decision there. We love the hobby, and were going to be pro-GW, or at leastnot anti-GW, and by not having a forum, itallowed us to uniquely position ourselves asa content site, rather than another forum.

Monty:We very consciously dont have aforum.

Larry:So, no one can come one our site andsay well, Im the best there is, and heres mycheaty list! They come to us, and we tellthem what the rumors are, and we give themlots of cool stuff that we can download forfree, and that sets up peoples mindsets.

their product, and they rely on players tooverlook their mistakes, but because of thecarefully-cultivated tournament circuit, it goesin the opposite direction, and people takeadvantage of things that are mispriced, ormistakes theyve made. Now, while we try togive tacticas out for advanced players, so theycan have some interesting ideas on how toplay competitively, thats not how we play. Weplay the game to enjoy the hobby. We still dotournaments, and hope that were competitiveplayers, but thats not our army focus.

Where Did The Fly Lords of Terra ComeFrom?:Monty:Originally, we were an Adepticon

team. Were actually on the board forAdepticon now, and try to help them out asmuch as we can. We think that Adepticonis really doing the same thing we are; byplayers, for players. Thats exactly whatthe hobby needs: game players contributingto the hobby. Adepticon is the biggest eventin our hobby, and theyre really just amazing. We contacted them early on, and asked howwe could help. Now were helping them with

marketing and software, because we reallythink theyre fantastic.

Anyway, the name started out as anAdepticon team tournament name, and wekept it as a way for us to identify ourselves attournaments and other big events, you know,a travel thing. Now, though, weve expandedit to include everyone who helps test andcontributes to the site.

Its funny how many people ask what itmeans, really, it is! At a tournament, I hadsomeone come up and ask if I was reallya Fly Lord, or if Id just bought the shirt orsomething. He was sort of hoping that I wasbigred, because he wanted to argue withhim about something. I told him no, I was

the guy who wrote the Lash tactica, so hedecided I was a jerk anyway. It was a greatway to meet someone. We ended up havinga really long discussion about it. At the sametournament, a guy brought his girlfriend overbecause his girlfriend was getting into thehobby, and wanted me to talk to her aboutSisters, since Im something of a Sistersexpert

Larry:Hes good with the ladies, he is.

Monty:Yes. I am a ladies man. I do it all forthe ladies.

Thats how we came up with the name, though - to appeal to people in their 30swho would remember the Fly Girls. Peoplereally get a kick out of the name and thelogo.

Larry:Thank God we didnt go with TheHeavy Flamers.

Thanks to Monty and Larry for theinterview, and for all their efforts onbehalf of the hobby!

The Fly Lords of Terra have justannounced a new campaign book:

    THE MACHARIAN CRUSADE!Features will include:

120 full color pages 8 week campaign for 2 to 40+ players

7 Imperial Guard army groups Multiple renegade and xenos empires 40+ special characters New units Over a dozen Apocalypse formations Full color hobby section

    Painting Workshop: Eldar Masterclass

STEP 1The bodies are painted a solid Imperial Blue over a black undercoat. On the Banshee I have also roughly applied the base colours for theother main areas to get a feeling for the end result. Note that I havenot completely assembled the Guardians arms and head. This is tobetter access the chest area and, specifically, the soul stone. The headis left off since the area around the neck otherwise gets pretty hard to

reach with the brush without making a total mess of it. The Banshee isfully assembled since it does not sport any hard to reach spots. I alsoused both pinning and green stuff when I attached the sword arm andprefer to have this done before the painting starts.

STEP 2The armour plates are picked out with Magic Blue, and the body suitsare highlighted with the same colour.

    STEP 3

The bulbs are painted Ice Blue, and the armour plates are highlightedwith the same colour.

    Painting Workshop: Eldar Masterclass

STEP 4All the blue areas are now given a wash of very thinned down StormyBlue. This really ties the different blues together, toning them down alittle as well as providing some extra shading.

STEP 5Next is all the white parts. The helmet and the Banshees tabard aswell as any ribbons are painted Wolf Grey. At this stage I also finishthe bases, which are made with sand and a few pieces of slate. They

are painted with Chaos Black and then drybrushed with AdeptusBattlegrey, Codex Grey and Astronomican Grey. The rim is paintedCodex Grey.

    STEP 6

The white areas are shaded with Ice Blue mixed with a small amount ofWolf Grey (approximately 4:1 ratio).

STEP 7The white highlights are built up gradually with a lot of thin layers ofSkull White. By using watered down colours you can let some of theunderlying colour show through, thereby creating smooth transitionswithout having to mix colours.

STEP 8The sword hilt and all the jewellery on the Banshee are painted withBubonic Brown.

    STEP 9

Shade with thinned out Bestial Brown.

STEP 10Highlights are created with Bleached Bone. I stop at this point, sinceI do not want it to look like gold (I fancy the Eldar without any kind ofmetallics). For a more gold-like effect, you could go further and createanother sharp highlight by mixing some white in the Bleached Bone, inaddition to creating another darker shade.

STEP 11Next comes my favourite part the soul stones! I know many peoplelike to paint all the bulbs on the eldar armours and weapons like gems, but I limit myself to one. Doing so I think they stand out more, acting

like a focal point for the eye when looking at the miniature.

The base colour for the Guardian is Warlock Purple, for the Banshee Iuse Scab Red.

    STEP 12

The lower right half of the stone is then painted in successively lighterand thinner slivers as follows:

Guardian: Mix Skull White with the Warlock purple. Repeat until themix is almost white for the final thin line.

Banshee: First sliver is painted Red Gore, the next Blood Red, andthen Blood Red mixed with Bronzed Flesh, and finally a sliver of pureBronzed Flesh. To make it red again, apply a very thin wash of RedGore.

STEP 14The eyes are painted Warlock Purple and Scab Red respectively. Thismirrors the soul stones.

    STEP 15

Next paint the centre of the eye lenses in progressively lighter coloursin the same method as each soul stone, until there is a really light andsmall dot in the middle.

STEP 17Paint the hair Red Gore, leaving the darker colour in the recesses.

    STEP 18

A wash of watered down Chaos Black is applied to create some darkershading. By applying it after the first layer of red the colours aresomewhat tied together.

STEP 20A couple layers of really thin Red Gore are applied. This will tone downthe highlights and lighten up the shaded areas, tying the differentlayers together.

Originally I tried to match the drone size tothat of the Forge World model. The ForgeWorld Remora has a drone body close to thediameter of a small flying base rather thanthe smaller gun drone diameter. I choose

not to continue with this prototype becauseit is a lot more work i.e. you have to cut asmall flying base, cut the plastic curve from asoda bottle, glue Targeting Array and plasticcurve onto modified small flying base andadd Green Stuff. You then have to add in thearmour indents with a Dremel in a circularfashion on the small flying base (which Ididnt do on the prototype) as well as fashion

a larger underbodyfor me using the gundrone was enough.

    Tutorial: Cadian Plastics

    33Firebase Issue #6 April 2008

    By Brian Slipstream Johnson

Welcome to the Cadian Plastics Class! Eversince GW released a fully plastic ImperialGuard Army (that wasnt Catachans), Ivebeen interested in seeing just what can bedone with the sprues alone. After starting tofiddle with the sprues, in an attempt to builda ground-pounder army, I have found that, while lacking in many key areas, the CadianSprues do their job well. That job, of course,is to put basic troops on the field.

In truth, these sprues pale in comparison tothe new sprues coming out of the CitadelDesign Studio, but with a little work, they canbe made into a surprisingly large numberof Army Choices from the Imperial GuardCodex.

As always, please make sure your work area

is clean, and well lit. Make sure you havea comfortable chair, and your beverage ofchoice. Always take a break from working afteran hour or two. Get up, stretch out, and spend10-15 minutes away from the work area.

THE SPRUESOn the generic Cadian Shock Troops sprues, you will find enough legs and torsos to makefive models. You will find seven different

heads (1 helmet-less, one with an undone

helmet strap, one vox-caster, and four

standard). There are five sets of grenades(some with extra clips, some without),a helmet, a spare lasgun, five canteen/bayonets (some with empty sheaths moreon this later), A grenade launcher (withspare clip/canteen), a flamethrower (withbackpack), a Voxcaster backpack, five lasgunarms (three with bayonets attached, twowithout) in various poses, a grenade arm, a

laspistol arm, and a sergeants chainswordarm (it has three stripes).

If you take a moment to look at these sprues, youll see that there are several small, butimportant, details. First is the pose of thelegs. There are three legs that imply motion,as if the model was running, and two, whichimply that the model is standing still. Thisis important, as poses can give a squad

a unified theme useful when trying toWYSIWYG up Imperial Guard Doctrines.Interestingly, the lasgun arms are paired withthe legs. There are two lasguns set tightagainst the shoulder, in an aiming pose, and three where the gun is held slightlydown, as if running. Using the right armswith the right legs can create the differencebetween a firing line, and a squad rushing

    into battle.

CADIAN PLASTICS: MOREBANG FOR YOUR BUCK

SYMBOLS Can be done straight from the

    Cadian sprues.

    Requires some cutting, filing ortrimming.

Requires the use of metal bitz, bitzfrom another army or the use ofplastic card or rod.

This is a heavy-duty conversion, requiring the use of greenstuff andis beyond the scope of this tutorial.

This is simply not possible to dowith the Cadian sprues alone.

TOOLS X-acto Knife (keep a supply of fresh blades. Flush cutters/nippers Files (flat and round) Cutting mat Pin vise, with various sizes of drill bits

MATERIALS Styrene rod: 1/16 rod (1.6mm) and

1/8 tube (3.2mm) Paper (copy paper is fine) Plasticard (thin) Bitz from your bitzbox (optional) Greenstuff (very optional)

    34/87

    34Firebase Issue #6 April 2008

There are only a few optional componentson the sprue, but one of the key items is thefact that the canteen/bayonet bitz pair upwith the fact that some of the lasguns have

bayonets, and some do not. When usingthese bitz, remember to use an empty sheathwith a model whose bayonet is attachedto their lasgun! Some of the extra pieces(such as the spare lasgun) can be used withthe available arms, to try and create someadditional poses, useful for WYSIWYG.

Over on the Heavy Weapon Sprues, youget a LOT more optional pieces. Sandbags,

weapons, binoculars and a slew of heavyweapons. In fact, every heavy weapon, allowing you to create a wide variety ofconversions! Remember, a heavy weaponsteam box can be used to make every heavyweapon in the IG arsenal. Combining theheavy weapon box with a Cadian ShockTrooper box (and some extra large bases),you can stretch that box into all five heavy

    weapons teams!

Finally, the Cadian VehicleAccessory Sprue has somevery interesting pieces, including a head with apeaked cap! Now, we haveeverything we need tocreate an entire IG army.

WYSIWYGWhy is this important? Well, the concept of What YouSee Is What You Get isimportant when you put

your troops on the battlefield, especially incompetition. Your opponent cannot arguethat your model has a meltagunwhen themodel has a meltagun. By making sure your

models are WYSIWYG, you do yourself, andyour opponents, a big favor. Plus, it makesyour models look that much better!

HQ CHOICESFor an HQ squad, right out of the box, theconversions are fairly simple. Well start withthe officer. A Junior Officer can be made witha helmet less head, plus whatever options

you want him to have. Typically, this is alaspistol and chainsword. On the chainswordarm, youll see three stripes, as seen below:It is an easy thing to use an X-Acto knife,

or file, to remove stripes. For officers, youll want to remove all of the stripes. ForSergeants, consider removing one stripefor a regular Sergeant, and leave all threefor a Veteran Sergeant. Work with care, and

smooth out any cuts with a small file. In thisway, you can use the chainsword arm tohelp identify officers and sergeants in yourImperial Guard Army.

For a Senior Officer, consider using thepeaked cap head from the Vehicle Sprue. Thisquickly sets the model apart from the rest ofyour army. Use the helmet from the Cadiansprue to give your officer a way to survive the

shrapnel, by gluing it to his beltline.

A Heroic Officer can combine a variety ofarms from the various sprues, to show that heis leading. Consider putting him on a largerbase, with scenic details, to set him apart!

On the left, youll see a Junior Officer, made with the pointing arm from the Heavy

Weapons Sprue, a helmet less head, and

a chainsword arm. He also has a SpaceMarine pistol holster. In the middle, a SeniorOfficer, made with the raised arm from thevehicle sprue, whose hand I trimmed off,and replaced with a laspistol hand. He is alsousing the torso from the vehicle sprue, to

give him that officer braid. On the right, on a40mm base, a Heroic Senior Officer, using allthe bitz from the vehicle sprue (legs, torso, head, and arms), plus the sandbags fromthe heavy weapons sprue, and a canteen, helmet, and lasgun from the regular sprue.

HQ BASICSThankfully, the sprues include a few options, including a flamer, a grenade launcher,

and a Vox Caster. This means that you can

make both a full command squad, withsome special weapons, as well as severalspecial weapons squads. Youll find that youwill have an excess of grenade launchersand flamers, if you equip your army withplasma and melta guns. So, consider usingthe extra flamer and grenade launcher bitz

to augment your HQwith flamer or grenadelauncher special weaponsquads. Two of thespecial weapon squadoptions, the Sniper Rifleand the DemolitionCharge, are ModerateConversions. Check

    the Weapons and

Wargear section, later onin this article, on how tomake those. Plasmagunsand Meltaguns are besthandled with metal Citadelminiatures.

To the left is a full HQ Squad,

    consisting of an Heroic Senior

    Officer, Standard Bearer,

    Medic, and two Grenade

    Launcher specialists. Note

    that the Grenade Launcher

    miniatures use kneeling

    legs from the Cadian Heavy

    Weapons Sprue.

VETERANSOne of the easiest ways to identify aminiature as a special unit is through a paint

job. Extra decals, special coloration on thehelmet, or shoulder pads, or even insignia onthe armour itself can make a miniature standout. For Veterans in the Command Squad,

I like to paint the shoulder pads a differentcolor (Chaos Black, for example) to signifytheir elite status. Ill also use backpacks fromthe Heavy Weapon Team to signify thatthese are experienced campaigners. Onceyou have your scheme for making Veterans, adding a few details to the miniature tomake it a Medic is fairly easy. You can paintthe backpack white, with a red cross upon

it, or some other variation. Again, a black

shoulder pad with a white cross works wellhere. Alternatively, you can use bitz froma company like Tamiya, who makes 1/48thscale items for WWII Armour modeling, including backpacks and stretchers.

A standard bearer can be made, using the

grenade arm from the Cadian Shock sprue,a plastic rod, and a paper flag. Carefully drillout the grenade, using your pin vise, and adrill bit slightly larger than your plastic rod.The 1/16th inch rod will work here, for thestandard pole. Slide the rod into the hand, expanding the hole if necessary, and glueeverything in place. Print, paint or photocopyyour banner of choice, and attach it to thestandard pole, draping the paper to look like

cloth. If youre feeling adventurous, you canadd some greenstuff rope. There are also

several IG Standard Bearer miniatures fromCitadel, which will save some time, as wellas standards from Fantasy armies, such asEmpire or Brettonians.

In the picture below a standard bearer; usinga grenade arm with a Brettonian standard

attached, and a left arm from the CadianShock sprue, whose hand was trimmed offand rotated to hold a spare lasgun. In themiddle; a medic with a backpack from theheavy weapon sprue, a grenade launcherarm and a Tamiya stretcher. Finally; a Veteranusing a laspistol arm, and a hand (leftoverfrom the senior officer conversion).

    ADVISORS

The Commissar, Priest, and Psyker Advisorsare difficult to do with the standard sprues.Only the Commissar, using a peaked hat,

the torso and arms fromthe Cadian Vehicle Sprue, and a greenstuff-formedTrench coat, is easily withinthe realm of conversion.Since there are manymodels out for theseAdvisors, I advise usingthem, instead of trying tomake them yourself.

    The Elite Choices of the

    Imperial Guard Codex

    are difficult to convert.

    However, some of them

can be made with a bit of

    effort.

    HARDENED VETERANS

The easiest of the bunch, Hardened Veterans

are simply gussied up IG troops. Use extra

helmet less heads, the IG heads whosechinstraps are undone, and other bitz to

show that these gung-ho guys are the elite

of the unit. Extra knives (from the Heavy

Weapons Sprues), canteens and clips, and

backpacks can quickly set these miniatures

apart from the rest. Of note, since the

    Veteran Sgt. CAN take officer only items;

you can use this to set him apart from the

rest of the squad. If you have access to

the older Catachan Sprues, consider using

elements from there, such as heads, arms,

and knives. Mix it up! These are the dirty

dozen of your IG force, and they should be

    rough, tough, and ready!

None. There are a few tutorials out there onhow to make Cadian Rough Riders, but theCadian Sprues, regretfully, do not come with

    horses. Or bikes.

HEAVY WEAPONS PLATOONAgain, another easy set. The HeavyWeapon Box is a wonderful set of sprues, full of details and customization options.

Remember, you can use those kneeling legsin other squads. Theyre particularly helpfulwhen making snipers, or customizing yourHQ squads. Mixing and matching thesesprues with the Shock Trooper Sprues makefor some interesting modeling options

The two heavy weapons teams below area mix of Cadian Shock and Cadian Heavy

sprues. Bitz from the sprues have been usedas part of the bases, as well as some bitzfrom the Citadel Ruined Building Sprue, tomake it look like these teams have dug into their positions. Using Cadian Shock legs, instead of the kneeling legs, frees up twosets of legs for other conversions in the army.

In many ways, WYSIWYG modeling can

represent the doctrines from the ImperialGuard codex. While some doctrines (suchas Independent Commissars) simply allowyou to set up your army differently, theCadian Sprues can be used to represent awide variety of these army options. If youropponent can clearly see which doctrinesare applied to your army, youll both have abetter gaming experience.

DROP TROOPSThis is the most difficultand, in some ways easiest, conversion. You can usethe IG troops right off thesprue, to portray droptroops. However, to reallymake an impact, youll wantto convert them. Either with

    special backpacks or going

whole hog, such as a Warhawks conversion, your troops will look great on the battlefield.

MECHANIZEDPair up the guard with Chimeras, and youreready to roll! Everything from the ArmouredFist entry applies here. Remember, many

companies make 1/35th and 1/48th scale bitzto show stowage on your tanks. Go to townon making your tanks look lived out of, andyoull have a fine Mechanized fighting force. This is the easiest of the three RegimentalDoctrines to make from the basic CadianSprues.

GRENADIERSAs mentioned previously, it is possible to

Important Note: Many of the doctrines, such as carapace armor/storm troopers/grenadiers, or hardened fighters/hardenedveterans, can easily be confused. If youare using multiple doctrines that createsimilar-looking miniatures, take extra care todifferentiate between them, either with theselection of bitz, poses, or paint scheme.

DIE HARDSCertainly one of the easier doctrinesto model, Die Hards is simply a moralemodification. Consider purity seals or otherdecorations to signify that they will standtheir ground.

IRON DISCIPLINEAn officerdoctrine, the useof a good pose,or purity sealscan show that thisofficers ability to

command is betterthan average. It isimportant to showwhich officers inyour commandhave this ability!

INDEPENDENT COMMISSARSThis is purely a deployment and gamedoctrine, no conversions needed.

CLOSE ORDER DRILLMostly a game-based doctrine, in how yougroup your miniatures, a forest of bayonetsreally conveys this Doctrine to the hilt.

HARDENED FIGHTERSI like giving these miniatures all bayonets, and some extra knives. Knives are easy toget, both from the heavy weapons sprues,

    and other armies.

JUNGLE FIGHTERSThis was made for all the Catachan Players, and is best suited to those models. However, if youre interested in conversions,a combination of Catachan and CadianSprues, with some camo paint jobs, makesfor a very unique-looking army. These troopsbenefit from having machetes. Ask a Tau

player if they have any extra Kroot knives.

LIGHT INFANTRYThis was designed for the Gaunts Ghostsline of Metal Guardsmen, but can still bedone with Cadian Sprues. A bit of greenstuff

can make cloaks, but remember to file off thebump on the back of the Guardsman torso. To show that they travel light, use the runninglegs/arms poses, as well as showing the heavyweapon team (if any) carrying their equipment.

SHARPSHOOTERSRemove all bayonets from the guns, and

add scopes tothe rifles. Do not

use the longlasoption, as theseare not snipers. Also, considerpainting thelasguns a differentcolor, to showthat theyre adifferent mark of

rifle. These troops benefit the most from thestanding legs/braced shooting pose.

XENOFIGHTERSThis isnt seen very often, unless yourepurposefully creating a fluffy army, or youknow that youre fighting a given armyon a regular basis, perhaps as part of acampaign. Using heads and bitz from thearmy in question is the easiest way to portray

Xenofighters. Theres nothing quite like ahead on the top of a banner pole to say;We hate Orks.

VETERANSEverything in the Hardened Veterans sectionapplies here, except you get to have threeunits of them, instead of one. Considerusing themed paint jobs and equipment toshow that this is an entire unit of Hardened

Veterans, instead of just one squad.

CHEM. INHALERIf you have a good stockpile of Cadian Voxheads, you can make good-looking Chem.Inhaler units simply by using vox heads foryour entire army. For a little extra work, trimming the side unit off of the helmet, andadding a greenstuff hose and canister will

easily set your army apart. Asking around,

you might be ableto get Voxheadsfrom other Cadianplayers, and manybitz-sellers onlinecarry them.

CAMEOLINEAn Easy-to-moderateconversion, thiscould be as simpleas painting all your

troops with a detailed camo pattern, or fora Moderate Conversion; adding greenstuff/cheesecloth ghillie suits, and other camocloak options. This Doctrine was designed to

work with the Light Infantry Doctrine.

CARAPACE ARMOURIn the same realm of the Storm Trooper/Grenadier conversion, you can usegreenstuff and plasticard to up the armourof a standard IG miniature. Also, platemailtorsos from the Citadel Fantasy lines canbe made to work as well. This conversion isbeyond the scope of this article, but thereare tutorials out on the Internet.

CYBER ENHANCEMENTDesigned for people who want tomake Adeptus Mechanicus Armies, thisrepresents the entire army having bionics, oraugmented armour. This is definitely one ofthose major conversion projects.

WARRIOR WEAPONSProbably one of the easier conversions;barring the lack of a ready supply of laspistolsof course. Finding pistol holsters, or otherclose combat weapons can make this aneasier job. Consider using weapons fromthe Citadel Fantasy line, such as the Empire

Militia or Pistoleers sprues. Space MarinePistol Holsters are also readily available.

IMPERIAL GUARD ARMOURYA variety of items can be made from thesprues. However, having access to a friendwho runs Space Marines will make thissection of conversion ideas a lot easier.

As you can see, certain weapons come bydefault on the sprues. The restyou haveto beg, buy, or make yourself. Metal Citadelminiatures represent many of these options, and their purchase will certainly save yousome time. However, a few conversionsare easy to do from the stock sprues andsome plastic rod, such as Sniper Rifles and

SNIPER RIFLESA moderate Conversion, but still easy onthe list, Longlas pattern sniper rifles can bemade from a stock Cadian Rifle, a Scope, and a bit of plastic rod.

Using a freshX-Acto blade, cutthe barrel out of astandard Lasgun.Keep the flashsuppressor andthe gun, discard

    the barrel.

Using a pinvise, drill a shallow hole into thegun, and the flash suppressor.

Next, cut about 3/8thof an inch (5-6mm)of plastic rod thatmatches the barreldiameter (I used

    1/16th rod 1.6mm)

Finally, assemblethe gun, gluingthe new barrelinto place. If youwish to have a

silenced sniper rifle, use a slightly thickerrod, in place of the flash suppressor fromthe lasgun. Remember to drill a hole in both

    ends of the rod!

    DEMOLITION CHARGES

There are Citadel Miniatures, which representthe Demolition Charge very well. Additionally, you can make demo charges using plasticardtube and rod, plus a bit of greenstuff to fillgaps and holes, as seen here.

    SPACE MARINE BITZ

The following weapons from the standardspace marine sprue can easily be used.(I suggest filing off any skull icons):

Bolt Pistol, Plasma Pistol, Power Fist, PowerWeapon, Bolter, Shotgun (Space Marine ScoutSprue), Storm Bolter, Plasmagun, Meltagun.

Much of the Wargear listed can also beacquired from the sprues of other Armies,

especially Space Marines. However, a fewitems can easily be made, so Ive includeda short tutorial on making purity seals andmedals from greenstuff and paper.

BIONICSA moderate conversion, the easiest way to showbionics is to paint a hand silver. You could alsoreplace a section of arm, or leg, with plastic rodor tubes. A bit of greenstuff to make hydraulic

hoses; and the bionic limb is complete. There

are also Space Marine heads with built-in bioniceyepieces, which can also be used.

COMPANY STANDARDMuch like a Standard Bearer, this is simplya much more flashy Standard. Moregreenstuff tassels and rope, a topper on theStandard Pole, and posing the miniature ona large scenic base are all ways to make theCompany Standard really stand out.

MASTER-CRAFTED WEAPON,TRADEMARK ITEMThe easiest way to represent these items isby a good paint job. A splash of gold on achainswords hilt and handle, or a scope on alaspistol, will do the job nicely. Alternatively,

such as a Space Marine Power Weapon, willhelp this bit of Wargear stand out.

PURITY SEALS, MEDALSMost Space Marine players will have plentyof extra purity seals. You can also buy themonline from most bitz dealers. However,if you have the time, cut some paper intosmall strips, about 1/4th of an inch (half acentimeter) in length. Glue a couple together, overlapping, and then place a very small ballof greenstuff at the top. Press down with a flatsurface, such as the side of your X-Acto knifefor a Medal, or with the tip of a ballpoint pen,for a Purity seal. Remember to dip the tool inwater, first, so the greenstuff does not stick.Let dry, and paint appropriately.

SPACE MARINE BITZAs with much of the weapons, Space Marinebitz can be used to represent much of theImperial Guard wargear as well: Holy Relic(From the Black Templar or Dark Angelssprues), Purity Seals, Signum, Surveyor

TARGETERSeen mostly on Storm Trooper Hellguns, a

bit of plastic rod can be used on the side of alasgun conversion to represent the laser sight.

REFRACTOR FIELD, ROSARIUSThese items are difficult to model. A refractorfield could be a plate of plasticard aroundthe neck, or some form of backpack. TheRosarius is a Priest-only piece of wargear, and is usually represented by a string ofbeads. You could model this with small balls

of greenstuff, placed in a line like a necklace.

CONCLUSIONSSo, in summary, it is possible to make thefollowing units from the IG Codex, usingnothing but the stock Cadian Sprues (ShockTroops, Heavy Weapons Team, VehicleAccessory Sprue):

HQ: Junior Officer, Senior Officer,Heroic Senior Officer, Medic, Vox Caster,Grenadier and Flamer Special WeaponsSquads, Heavy Weapons Squads

Elite: Hardened Veterans Troops: Infantry Platoon, Conscript

Platoon, Armoured Fist Heavy: Heavy Weapons Platoon

As for the Doctrines, you can make these

from the stock sprues: Regiments: Drop Troops, Mechanized Skills and Drills: Die Hards, Iron Discipline,

Close Order Drill, Hardened Fighters, LightInfantry, Sharpshooters, Veterans

    Special Equipment: Chem Inhalers,Cameoline

Finally, heres what Weapons and Wargearyou can assemble:

Weapons: Close Combat Weapon,Laspistol, Lasgun, Flamer, GrenadeLauncher, Frag and Krak Grenades

    Wargear: Master-Crafted Weapon,Trademark Item

With a little bit of Plasticard, Plastic Rod, andbitz, you can make much more!

Good luck, and good hunting, solider!

The world of wargaming much emphasis isplaced on painting the models. Techniques

such as non-metallic metals (NMM),feathering, wet-blending and the like can allgive your models a stellar appearance onthe tabletop. But a superbly painted modeldeserves a base to match.

Since the release of the Warhammer 40,000expansion Cities of Death there has been

an increased interest in urban and industrialbases. Games of Warhammer 40,000 almostalways feature urban ruins. This makesurban-based models look at home on most

    gaming tables.

This article presents a simple guide tocreating detailed, multi-textured urbanbases, ideal for Warhammer 40,000,Necromunda, and any other tabletopwargame featuring urban ruins.

MATERIALS AND PAINTS NEEDEDSprue cut into rubble-sized pieces Instead

of throwing out the plastic frames that yourmodels come on, use a pair of clippers toturn them into rubble. Pieces ranging fromabout 0.5cm to 2cm in length are ideal for40k models, while Inquisitor models canbenefit from some longer ones.

Woodland Scenics Medium Ballast Medium Ballast is a fairly coarse sand orfine gravel. It is less coarse than the GW

gravel, and resembles small, flat flakes. If youdo not have medium ballast you can use thestandard GW sand. Due to its flakey nature, ballast more closely resembles real rubblethan sand.

Fiberglass window screen This is availableat most hardware stores in North America.Generally it is sold in large rolls, or sold bylength. For basing projects you do not needlarge amounts of it.

If you do not have access to window screen, any fine, stiff mesh can be substituted, including the brass mesh that comes in theGW basing kit.

PVA and Super Glue The standardadhesives used for attaching materials tothe base. Super glue is optional, but highlyrecommended.

Required Paints Chaos Black, Codex Grey,Fortress Grey, Scorched Brown, Graveyard

    Earth

Optional Paints Bestial Brown, BoltgunMetal, Chaos Black Spray

CONSTRUCTION1) Using superglue stick a few pieces ofrubble to the base. You could use PVA gluefor this step, but super glue is much faster.

    2) Glue down a few pieces of screen usingsuper glue. Only glue them down along oneedge and bend them so that they stick up.

Again, PVA glue is an option, but does nothold the screen down as well and takes muchlonger to dry.

    3) Spread PVA glue over the base, but leavemost of the sprue and screen uncovered. This is to hold down the first layer of ballast. The base will look best if most of the sprueand screen are sticking out of the smallerrubble.

    4) Cover the glue with a layer of mediumballast. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    5) Apply a second layer of ballast to ensurean even coverage.

Be certain to build up the second layer

around the rubble and base of the screen.

Do not worry about applying an even secondlayer; the goal of applying multiple layers isto create an uneven, undulating surface.

    6) Apply a third layer of ballast in some areasto make the surface more uneven. This isparticularly important around the screen andsprue.

    7) Spread a layer of watered-down PVA glueover the entire base to seal it. This ensuresthat grains of sand will not come off duringpainting.

    8) Let the glue dry completely. Dependingon how watery the glue was this may take upto 24 hours. Once you are satisfied the gluehas dried, the base is ready for painting.

PAINTING1) Prime the base with Chaos Black. I choseto simply apply watered-down paint witha brush, but you could use spray-primerinstead.

    2) Apply a heavy drybrush of Codex Grey

    3) Lightly drybrush the base with Fortress Grey

    4) Paint the base with a very watered-downChaos Black wash. This step will add contrastto areas where the two layers of drybrushingmay have been too heavy. It also adds adarker, dirtier look to the grey. Once thewash is dry you can also re-drybrush certainareas if you think they look too dark.

    5) Selectively apply a wash of ScorchedBrown. Do not paint the entire base with thebrown; the goal is to have an uneven colour. The Scorched Brown will give the base amuddy, dirty look; much dirtier than simplyusing shades of grey and black would.

    6) Gently drybrush the base with Graveyard

Earth. This step gives the base theappearance of having large amounts of dustand dried mud caked on the rubble, addingto the desired dirty appearance.

    7) Paint the rim of the base whatever colouryou wish. I find that darker colours work best, and should offer some contrast with the final

colours of the base. For this sample I optedto use Scorched Brown, but feel free to use adifferent colour if you prefer.

The model should be painted to match withthe base. By stippling Scorched Brown andGraveyard Earth on the feet, knees, andlower legs of a model you can easily simulatethe appearance that your soldiers havebeen walking through a dirty, dusty, muddybattlefield.

VARIATIONSUsing similar techniques as the onesdescribed above one can create a large varietyof different looking bases. For example,by gluing a layer of screen flat onto theentire base one can give the appearancethat the model is standing on a steel mesh

deck -- ideal for models that would typicallyfight indoors (like Necromunda models, orImperial Navy boarding parties).

As you may have noticed, no special attention was given to the screen and sprue elementsof the base above. This was to give the basea uniformly dirty appearance; metal thatis caked in dirt will typically not appear tobe very shiny. If desired you can drybrush

the screen using Boltgun Metal to give it ametallic appearance. Lightly drybrushingBestial Brown over the top of the BoltgunMetal can add to the appearance of rustediron or steel.

This Necromunda Enforcer's base hasbeen painted using the same techniquesdescribed above, but instead of gluing downsmall patches of screen a section of screenwas cut to fit exactly over the top of the baseand glued down as a base layer. Sand andsections of sprue were then glued over thetop of the screen to give the appearance ofa steel grid walkway strewn with rubble.

Note that the bits of sprue and screen have

been drybrushed with Boltgun Metal beforeapplying any washes or layers of brown, giving the metal a slightly cleaner, less dirt-encrusted appearance.

The addition of elements from the Cities ofDeath buildings and the GW Urban Basingkit can create dynamic, three-dimensionalbases. Small amounts of snow flock can addto the character of an army, easily imitating

    the appearance of snow-strewn ruins.

The sand on this base was painted usinglighter shades of brown and yellow, givingthe appearance of sandstone or limestonerubble amongst the larger grey elements.

No one likes to play on an empty tabletop but commercial scenery isvery expensive. The best solution is to make some of your own. This

might seem a bit daunting at first, but taking it one step at a time it isa very simple process and best of all it will only cost you pennies!

STAGE 1First of all make sure you are working in a suitable space. You willneed a lot of room to move around and having a large area where allthe cutting can be done is essential, such as a large desk or table. Forthis first stage the stuff you will need are:

A pencil to draw on the boards hobby knives; a large one for basic cutting and ideally a smaller

knife for the details a pair of scissors to roughen up the building edges white glue to put everything together a large metal ruler, to guide your cutting 2.5mm thick foam board to make the building walls hard board to make the base and optionally you can drink loads of coffee and have a friend help

out (while you take all the credit!)

You will now have to make the decision on what you want yourbuilding to look like. You can be creative about this and make all sorts

of buildings using this method (ruined basilicas, tall office blocks etc.).For this article though I wanted to create a ruined tank factory.

As I had to go for a long and thin building I decided that the best

dimensions would be 50cm long, 19cm wide and 15cm tall with abase that was 60cm long by 30cm wide. To make it more practicalfor table top gaming I only included two walls with no ceiling, as thismakes it much easier when placing miniatures inside.

Draw the outline of the building onto the foam board using the penciland ruler. Carefully cut along these lines with the bigger hobby knife. When you have finished you should have two walls plus the base.

Add texture to the outside face of the walls and make it easier tomanipulate the material by removing the outside layer of paper.Once you have done this you will have the inside layer of foamshowing. Do this quite slowly and carefully as you risk breaking thewall and may have to start all over again.

When everything is all dry and settled its time to paint. Beginby undercoating it with a black spray (same as you would for aminiature). Leave to dry before using a brush to get to all the areasyou have missed with the spray.

Paint the base by gradually dry brushing with Scorched Brown, thenwith a Chaos Black/Codex Grey mix before a final highlight with a

Codex Grey/Fortress Grey mix. Paint the building walls with CodexGrey and dry brush with Fortress Grey. Use a large brush for this or itwill take ages. When it has dried completely glue static grass to finish.

Voila! You now have a beautiful building to use on your table topwithout it costing more than 5 dollars to make.

A large Tau force consists of numerouscadres, brought together and unified forthe Greater Good under the guidance andcouncil of an Ethereal. But what happenswhen the Ethereal is killed in battle or by lesshonourable means?

Leaderless and without a common focuson the destruction of their enemies, three cadres must unite under a singleCommander. But with their different battlephilosophies in contest, the three TauCommanders are unable to agree upon thebest course of action.

Surrounded by enemies and without theguidance and wisdom of the Ethereal caste, infighting breaks out.

This is a three-way battle quite unlike anyother. Tactics are more important than luckor armour saves because every unit hasdevastating weaponry but is relatively fragile.

Fielding an army against itself always makesfor an interesting game as units nullify eachother; intimidating elite troopers becomeeasy pickings and often overlooked troopsbecome deadly assassins. In this case, theKroot will probably become the kings ofclose combat!

To mix things up a little, we took threedifferent players armies, and createdthemed forces. One force favours long-rangefirepower, another favours high mobility andthe last combines both elements. The resultsmade for one entertaining game!

MONTAU: THE DEATH OF AN ETHEREALThe Tauva is no charming ideology, the Ethereals have beencontrolling their subjects all along. Remove the Aun caste andthe Greater Good has no meaning. Without their pheromone

manipulation, the Tau Empire is reduced to an anarchic pack ofdisparate creatures.

He landed a respectful distance fromthe body of AunSava, his jungle-camoBattlesuit not yet repainted for thisnew battlefield. Keeping an eye on the
