Function

Function maintenance for elec-trical systemsElectrical function maintenance isrequired in any structure in whichlarge numbers of people congre-gate, for example, hospitals, ho-tels, underground railway systemsor tunnels. Function maintenanceexists when the current flow is notinterrupted during a fire. This al-lows emergency lighting, ventila-tion and alarm systems to continueworking and emergency and es-cape routes to remain usable. Thelonger these technical systemswork, the greater the chances ofrescue.OBO systems for the electrical in-stallation of cable systems withfunction maintenance are testedaccording to the most importantstandards. Requirements for junction boxes with function maintenance

Connections with function main-tenanceMany larger buildings contain elec-trical systems relevant for safety.The routed cables cross firewallsand thus different fire sections. If afunction maintenance cable endsin a fire section, but needs to sup-ply a further fire section, the con-nection must be made with testedand approved clamping technolo-gy. If branches are created fromthis function maintenance cable forindividual consumers, e.g. safetylamps, then this consumer mustbe supplied with an upstream, re-action-free fuse. The T series of the FireBoxes pos-sesses all the benefits of normalcable junction boxes and is madeof a thermoplastic polymer. Theseinclude the resistance to break-ages, resistance to knocks and thehigh IP protection rating. TheFireBox T is tested and approvedas a connection and junction boxfor electrical function maintenanceto DIN 4102 Part 12 with theclasses E30 to E90.

FireBox T for installations withsecured branchEconomic application in challeng-ing structures: the OBO FireBox T,with internal fuse, protects eachelectrical function area separately.Cables can be branched simply toeach individual fire section usingthe box. In particular, in largebuildings, this flexible cabling typeconsiderably reduces the amountof materials used. If there is dam-age during a fire, the upstreamfuse trips, thus preventing the re-action of short-circuits. The fuseunit is fixed simply to a fasteningmandrel with a screw.

Tested and approved system

Proven connectionThe connection technology of theFireBox T series was proven in afire test at the Materials Testing In-stitute MPA NRW in Erwitte. Basedon the test results of the old B se-ries, it was also possible to con-firm the comparative values for thethermoplastic version. The test cer-tificate P-MPA-E-08-016, togetherwith the surveyor's report, can thusbe used as a proof of application.

The core of the FireBox T: The ceramic connection unit

Ceramics vs. heatThe high temperature-resistant ter-minals to connect the individualcable wires are pre-mounted toform a connection unit. The pro-tective conductor terminal is con-nected to the support clamp,meaning that covers of the metalparts are not required. This meansthat a dangerous contact voltagecannot occur.

The construction, made up of thesteel support clamp and baseplate, offers the ideal combinationfor secure connections in case offire. The ceramic terminals arekept in position, even at high tem-peratures, meaning that no add-itional tensile forces can affect thecables.

Routing cablesProducts for individual functionmaintenance routing, such asspacer clips, clamp clips, profilerails, pressure clips or groupedsupports, are key components forthe function maintenance of powerand data cables in case of fire.

Distributing power and dataThe new generation of the OBOFireBox T, with pre-mounted con-nection unit, makes the safe exten-sion or branching of function main-tenance cables child's play. Ver-sions with internal or external fas-tening, with a V-TEC cable glandor plug-in seal, open up countlessareas of application. Both powercables and data cables can bebranched. Optionally, a fuse holderis provided for installations with se-cured branches.

Maintaining the functionOBO FireBox T and OBO productsfor individual function maintenancerouting offers a unique range ofcable routing options with functionmaintenance of between 30 min-utes (E30) and 90 minutes (E90).All the elements are approved andallow secure cable routing accord-ing to DIN 4102 Part 12.
