Falmouth Hospital
Training Guideline
By Capt Michael Small
FFD
Purpose:
ID hazards associated with fighting fires in MRI trailers
Topics of Discussion Approach Securing Electricity Securing Magnet Identifying “The Line in the Sand”
APPROACH
Fire protection Note location of FD connection There is NO fire protection inside the trailer
itself
ELECTRICAL SHUTOFF SECURING ELECTRICITY DOES NOT
DE-ENERGIZE THE MAGNET!!!!!!!!
HEILUM GAS In the event the magnet has been
quenched, the helium gas will be vented into the atmosphere, with an approx 500-1 expansion rate
Only a hazard in vented into a closed space (O2 displacement)
Will produce a HUGE white vapor cloud
QUENCHING Quenching refers to the emergency
dumping of Helium gas to de-energize the magnet
Can only be done from INSIDE the room where the magnet is
CANNOT be done by a firefighter wearing protective gear or anything metallic
ELECRICITY SECURING THE ELECTRICITY DOES
NOT DE-ENERGIZE THE MAGNET
