Firmware Update
Instructions Grid-EYE Evaluation Kit Version 3.0
This document can be used to apply the firmware update patch to the evaluation kit to make
it compatible to the BT smart phone app.
1. Download and install SAM-BA 2.16
a) URL: http://www.atmel.com/tools/ATMELSAM-BAIN-SYSTEMPROGRAMMER.aspx
2. Install SAM-BA USB driver
a) Connect USB to PC, set the jumpers as bellow, press the reset button SW1 to reset
grid-eye board.

Click on Windows button, Right click on computer and click on "Manage", Select "Device
Manager" on the left hand side
b) Update driver
Right click on the "Unknown device"
Select "Update Driver Software"
c) Install driver manually
Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
d) Navigate driver folder
Navigate to the sam-ba install folder that contains the sam-ba driver
e) Complete USB installation
When Windows is done installing the driver, you will be presented with the following
window
3. Add the support for Grid-Eye-Sensor evaluation kit
a) Unpack the patch package we provided:Samba2.16-grid-eye-sensor-patch.zip
b) Copy these files to SAM-BA 2.16 installation directory: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Atmel\sam-ba_2.16\tcl_lib. Replace the original file.
4. Update Bluetooth firmware
a) Set the jumpers as bellow, press the reset button SW1 to reset grid-eye board

b) Open SAM-BA
c) Click “Connect”
d) Select the Bluetooth patch firmware we provided:
SAMD21_PATCH_BT_6_2_20160526_v2.1.bin.
e) Click “Send File”.
f) After the program download process, disconnect the J18. Set the jumpers as
bellow.

g) Press the reset button SW1, running Bluetooth patch program
when the SW1 button is pressed, the LED D3 starts to flash quickly, which indicates that
the Bluetooth program is being updated. When the LED D3 stops flash and keeps on,
the Bluetooth program has been updated.
h) Close SAM-BA, disconnect USB
5. Update normal MCU firmware
a) Connect USB to PC, set the jumpers as bellow, press the reset button SW1 to reset
grid-eye board.

b) Open SAM-BA
c) Click “Connect”
d) Select the Bluetooth patch firmware we provided:
SAMD21_USB_DUART_DEMO_57600_6_2_20160427_v2.1.bin
e) Click “Send File”
f) After the program download process ,Set the jumpers as bellow, press the reset
button SW1 to reset gird-eye board.

g) Up to now both of the Bluetooth and MCU firmware has been updated and
already running.
