Approximately $9.9 million was in the form ofa stock retirement effec- tive Dec. 1,2000. The remaining $4.8 million in cash patronage will be paid in early 2001. Stock refunds will be applied automatically to outstanding loan balances or placed in funds held accounts. "The capital strength of the asso- ciation built through the hard work and performance of our members and their loans allows for this reduction while still maintaining the necessary capital to provide for the organiza- tion's continued growth and stabil- ity," said Terry Dane, the associa- tion's chief executive officer. "Just as important is an effort to reduce our members' cost of borrowing money, by returning the fruits of their efforts in cash." "For example, the cash patronage amount represents between a half to ELMS students recognized for poetry Eighth grade students at Eagle Lake Middle School (ELMS) had the opportunity to enter a poetry contest during the fall semester, competing with eighth graders from all over Texas. Two ELMS students chose to sub- mit original poems to the contest, hosted by Creative Communication Inc. The poems submitted by Savannah Spears and George Pierce have been selected to be included in an upcoming anthology, A Celebration of Young Poets. Their poems were selected from thousands of entries and chosen based on their literary merit, creativity and social awareness. Of this number about 100,000 die. A number of hospitalizations are caused by drug interactions (use of two or more drugs at the same time resulting in a modification of effect of at least one of the drugs). Sometimes the effect is desirable, but often the effect is not and can lead to serious injury or delay in effectiveness of one or more medi- cines. Methods of interaction may be from interference with gastroin- testinal absorption; one drug affecting the binding of another drug to blood proteins; a pronounced effect when both drugs produce the same effect; and an effect on a drug's metabolizing enzymes. For example the action of a blood pressure medicine may be interfered with by one of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. The effectiveness of certain oral antibiotics can be modified by antacid medicines. Prevent such interactions by talking with your pharmacist and physician about all the medicines you are taking. one percent reduction in rate," said Dane. First Ag Credit approves $14.7 million cash distribution

The board of directors of First Ag Credit, Farm Credit Services, recently approved a S14.7 million capital and cash patronage dividend to its mem- bers.

Approximately $9.9 million was in the form ofa stock retirement effec- tive Dec. 1,2000. The remaining $4.8 million in cash patronage will be paid in early 2001. Stock refunds will be applied automatically to outstanding loan balances or placed in funds held accounts.

"The capital strength of the asso-

ciation built through the hard work and performance of our members and their loans allows for this reduction while still maintaining the necessary capital to provide for the organiza- tion's continued growth and stabil- ity," said Terry Dane, the associa- tion's chief executive officer. "Just as important is an effort to reduce our members' cost of borrowing money, by returning the fruits of their efforts in cash."

opportunity to enter a poetry contest during the fall semester, competing with eighth graders from all over Texas. Two ELMS students chose to sub- mit original poems to the contest, hosted by Creative Communication Inc.

The poems submitted by Savannah Spears and George Pierce have been selected to be included in an upcoming anthology, A Celebration of Young Poets. Their poems were selected from thousands of entries and chosen based on their literary merit, creativity and social awareness. Both students are also eligible to be named as a "Top Ten Poet" and to win cash prizes for their poems.

Drug Interactions Can Be Life Threatening According to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical

Association, each year in the US approximately 1.5 million persons are injured and require hospitalization because of prescription medicines. Of this number about 100,000 die. A number of hospitalizations are caused by drug interactions (use of two or more drugs at the same time resulting in a modification of effect of at least one of the drugs). Sometimes the effect is desirable, but often the effect is not and can lead to serious injury or delay in effectiveness of one or more medi- cines.

Methods of interaction may be from interference with gastroin- testinal absorption; one drug affecting the binding of another drug to blood proteins; a pronounced effect when both drugs produce the same effect; and an effect on a drug's metabolizing enzymes. For example the action of a blood pressure medicine may be interfered with by one of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. The effectiveness of certain oral antibiotics can be modified by antacid medicines. Prevent such interactions by talking with your pharmacist and physician about all the medicines you are taking.

The lowered stock requirement will apply to members of First Ag Credit, FLCA; Wichita Falls PCA; and El Campo PCA. Members of Ag Credit of Texas, PCA, previously had their stock lowered to the minimum amount.

First Ag Credit, FCS, is an agricul- tural lending cooperative that special- izes in both short-term and long-term financing for farmers, ranchers, agri- businesses and rural landowners.

With 42 offices serving more than 113 counties, First Ag Credit has $670 million in loans outstanding to almost 6,000 borrowers.
