Injuries are the leading cause of death among children between the ages of 1 and 19, and most of these injury deaths can be prevented.

In 1996, for example, more than 13,000 children and adolescents in the United States died from unintentional (“accidental”) injuries, predominantly resulting from motor vehicle crashes, drowning, and residential fires.
