Apart from the Ten Command- ments, there were other 613 precepts of the Law contained in the five books of Moses from Genesis to Deuteronomy. In today’s first reading, Moses gathered the people on the plains of Moab before he died and reminded them of God’s love in giving them the laws. He encouraged them to keep the law so that they would prosper in the Land which they were about to enter. The Scribes in particular who later be- came religious experts of their day paraded themselves as people with great knowledge of the law and strictly ob- served the Law of Moses. They became rigid in interpreting the laws making it a burden to the people. One of such rigid interpretations of the law appeared in today’s gospel. In the episode, the Pharisees and Scribes accused Jesus of collusion in sin; for he let some of his dis- ciples eat without first washing their hands. According to them, this was a violation of the tradition of the elders. Their focus was on ritual observances and not on hygiene. The ritual washing of hands was meant to avoid the pre- sumed impurity of Gentiles from contaminating the purity of Jews. By failing to observe the ritual, the disciples of Jesus were trying to diminish the distinction between Jews and Gentiles. Jesus denounced their scrupulous washings of the hands. Then he went ahead to defend the spirituality of inclusion in these unmistakable terms: “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile” (Mk.7:14-15). Jesus gave a long list of sin- ful tendencies that are found in all human hearts which peo- ple struggle against in one form or another as the things that defile people and not washing of hands. Jesus condemned the spirituality of avoidance being propagated by the Pharisees and Scribes, which emphasized the devout fulfilling of pious religious obligations, but shunned away from those regarded as sinners for fear of being contaminated by them. Instead Christ preached the spirituality of involvement, which emphasized a helping hand to those perceived as sinners and those living on the margin of this world. St James in the second reading tells us that Christian spirituality and true religion should involve caring for the under-privileged and bringing sinners to reconciliation (involvement) and, keeping oneself from being contaminated by the world. “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” To- day, Jesus reminds us that the battle ground of our spiritual life is the human heart. A good heart produces a good life. A good life brings the good out of others by compassion, mercy and pardon. Thomas Merton, a spiritual writer, says, “We become saints not by conviction that we are better than sin- ners, but by the realization that we are one of them and that all together we need the mercy of God.”

Reflection During the time of Christ, the Law (Torah) was at the heart of Jewish tradition. Apart from the Ten Command-ments, there were other 613 precepts of the Law contained in the five books of Moses from Genesis to Deuteronomy. In today’s first reading, Moses gathered the people on the plains of Moab before he died and reminded them of God’s love in giving them the laws. He encouraged them to keep the law so that they would prosper in the Land which they were about to enter. The Scribes in particular who later be-came religious experts of their day paraded themselves as people with great knowledge of the law and strictly ob-served the Law of Moses. They became rigid in interpreting the laws making it a burden to the people. One of such rigid interpretations of the law appeared in today’s gospel. In the episode, the Pharisees and Scribes accused Jesus of collusion in sin; for he let some of his dis-ciples eat without first washing their hands. According to them, this was a violation of the tradition of the elders. Their focus was on ritual observances and not on hygiene. The ritual washing of hands was meant to avoid the pre-sumed impurity of Gentiles from contaminating the purity of Jews. Jesus gave a long list of sin-ful tendencies that are found in all human hearts which peo-ple struggle against in one form or another as the things that defile people and not washing of hands.

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” To-day, Jesus reminds us that the battle ground of our spiritual life is the human heart. Ongoing Collection for CASE

We need your assistance! CASE (Community Alliance to Support and Em-power) serves thirty-four households com-posed of 90 people, 42 of whom are chil-dren all residents of El Segundo. There still is a great need non perishable items,

can meat (chicken, tuna) cereals, juices, rice, pasta, spa-ghetti sauce, and snacks for kids, detergent, tooth paste, soaps toiletries, etc. Bin for your donated items is placed at the entrance of the church or you can bring them to the Parish Center. Thank you to all parishioners who have donated to this noble cause.

DID YOU KNOW? Pool safety is about more than s w i m m i n g Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfort-able situations. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t for-get about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited, email: [email protected]

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the Chapel The Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel is exposed from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, Monday thru Thursday. We don’t want Jesus to be alone, exposed in the monstrance without anybody staying for adoration. We are prepar-ing a sign-up sheet where you can sign up for the time slot when you normally visit the Blessed Sacrament. In this way, we will know the best time to expose the Blessed Sacrament with people staying for adoration. If we can fill up all the hours from Monday and Thursday, then the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all day as usual.

First Friday– September 4th is First Friday and we will have mass at 8:00 am in the Church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the 8:00 am mass. Benediction will take place at 5:00 pm. If you would like to spend one hour before the Blessed Sacrament, please call Marian Goyette at (310) 322-7367.

TAKE ACTION! Contact CA legislators to "Oppose assisted suicide when it comes to the Assembly floor. This is a recipe for elder abuse and sends a bad message to young people that suicide is 'the answer.' Please vote NO."

“We cannot allow California to become a place where we respond to human suffering by simply making it easier for people to kill themselves. Helping someone die - even if that person is desperate and asks for the help - is still killing.”
