THE WORD OF GOD CELEBRATED

*Hymn of Approach “God of the Women” Congregation (Tune: Be Thou My Vision, #382, © Carolyn Gillette, 1998, permission)

God of the woman who answered Your call.

Trusting Your promises, giving their all, Women like Sarah and Hannah and Ruth:

Give us their courage to live in Your truth.

God of the women who ran from the tomb,

Prayed with the others in that upper room,

Then felt Your Spirit on Pentecost Day: May we so gladly proclaim You today.

God of the women who walked Jesus’ way,

Giving their resources, learning to pray, Mary and Phoebe and Lydia too;

May we serve freely and do so anew!

Call to Supper Joel Russell-MacLean

The Great Thanksgiving

Minister: The Lord be with You.

4

People: And also with You.

Minister: Lift up your hearts!

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give thanks and praise.

Minister: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and

everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Since the beginning of time, you have called

women and men to serve You on earth. We treasure the stories of Your power at work in and through the lives of Lydia and Paul and

many others. We praise You, joining the angels of heaven, the faithful departed, and all our sisters and brothers around the world

saying:

All: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is

Jesus who came and will come again in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Minister: Jesus, You came to set us free from sin, death and the devil. With love, we offer ourselves to You, fully and completely,

as living sacrifices, as we proclaim the good news:

People: Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again!

Minister: Holy Spirit, bless this bread and wine that they become for us genuine symbols of the body and blood of Jesus. Unite us to

Jesus and bring us at last, with all the faithful, to resurrection and everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.

The Flowers of Spring! This year we would like to try something a little different with the flower beds around the church. When you pick up your bedding plants and if you wish to, pick up a 6 or 12 pack of flowers for the church flower beds as well. George is most willing to plant them for us and to maintain them. It can be any type of flower you wish, but remember that the flower beds are not in full sun and we seem to have better luck with shade and drought plants. Petunias, snap dragons, geraniums, marigolds and alyssum have all done well as, I am sure would others. Plants can be brought to the church beginning the May long weekend.

LEARNING FOR LIFE – SUNDAYS, 9:30-10:30 A.M.

Spiritual Disciplines: Creating Space for God Facilitator: Ron Phillips Today - May 29, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

In this class we will take a fresh look at familiar disciplines like prayer and Scripture reading, and at less familiar disciplines like simplicity, silence, service, and spiritual friendship.

If you feel an ache to know Christ more deeply, or wish to have a desire for Christ awakened, or simply feel a little ‘stale’ in your walk with Christ, come. These ancient time-tested practices will carve out a path for a steady walk with the Triune God, if you dare walk it.

“Why Not Women?” By Loren Cunningham & David Joel Hamilton Facilitators: Colin Carbno & Marilyn Phillips Today - May 15, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

There is still time to join us! Recently we studied in detail five gospel stories of Jesus’ interaction with women and how counter cultural they really were. We noted, that Martha’s declarations (Matt 16:16) in I Corinthians 7, an expansion of Gal. 3:28, was also studied in detail and we looked at the verses relating to men and women – that give substance to the equality of men and women in Jesus. A key word was homois, which means “same thing”, or “likewise”. We’ve also studied how in I Cor. 11:2-16 how the word translated as “head” doesn’t mean “authority over” but rather “source”. You won’t want to miss the upcoming discussion around “A Women must remain silent” and “a woman must not teach” passages where we will advocate by looking at the Greek that the passages clearly mean the opposite!
