So the last will be first and the first will be last ~ Matthew 20.16

Shepherds were regular folk, part of the working class of Bible times. They were the sort that slept out in the fields with the flock of sheep they were tending to for the town. Extroverts didn't usually become shepherds. Shepherds spent a lot of solo time, just them and their bunch of sheep waiting for the shift change. I am confident 4G was not around back then to get a message of good news out, so if the Big Kahuna wanted to get a message out, the shepherds - being loners - would be last on the list. No wonder these shepherds could hardly believe their eyes when in the black of night the sky lit up with an-gels and heavenly proclamations! Scripture tells us the shepherds were initially terrified then not, then they chose to be obedient. Likely, the initial terror was when each one saw it in their own gated pasture, got

over their 'shocknawe', then slowly left to see if any of the other shep-herds in the area had seen the same thing. Can you imagine trying to broach that subject, "Ah, Simeon,

unless you just saw the sky turn to daylight and angels appearing and speaking to you, ah, I think you'd better count me as sick n' watch my flock 'til the morning...would you?" They did leave the hills and did make their way quickly to Bethlehem to find the Christ Child. After finding Jesus, they did tell everyone what had happened.

If they'd simply sat around, scared to bring up what they'd experienced and been told to do, for fear of being committed, ridiculed, fired..., you wouldn't be reading this...there wouldn't be any holiday to get ready for...there wouldn't be any peace to be found amidst the preparations. But, the shepherds were obedient. They received the Good News. They did not reject the Good News. They risked sharing the Good News that Jesus had come for ALL people. God's object lesson in the sky featur-ing a bunch of introvert shepherds that were forced to come together and get out of their comfort zones, depicts God's love for even the low-liest, least, and unlikely among us. Dear God, Thank you for this fresh start. Thank you for your salvation of the lowli-est, least and unlikely in me and each of us. May we, like you, love all people. May we, like you, show them the way to Jesus. Amen.

From Our New Pastor - Rev. Doug Valentine

Music Notes from Ginny Henderson Director of Music

First of all, I want to extend a big welcome to Pastor Doug. All of us in the Music Ministry are looking forward to your first Sunday with us on November 27, which coincides with the first Sunday of Advent. You are in our prayers, and we look forward to the time when the rest of your family can join you. You and they are most wel-come to join us in our Choirs!

I would also like to welcome Bill Burrill, our Coach of Worship, back—Bill has been dealing with health issues in Maine. Bill, you have been much missed, and we rejoice that you are able to return to Connecticut to worship with us.

Our Christmas Cantata is on Sunday, December 18 during the 10 a.m. worship service. Please join our Choir as we celebrate "The PROMISE OF A KING." Rehearsals have been under way on Wednesday evenings for several weeks, and we have been so pleased that several new people have joined our Chancel Choir for this musical presentation. If

you have been thinking about it, delay no longer! The last Wednesday night for newcomers is November 30. We are also rehearsing Advent and Christmas numbers. The Christ-mas Eve service is 6 p.m.. We welcome all those wishing to

Praise the Lord in song!

I would also like to encourage parents to get their children singing in the Raise the Praise Kids’ Choir, directed by Matt Powers and Sandra Moya. Our youth will be singing Christmas Eve and will be practicing several Sunday mornings in December. Please see their Directors for times.

Christmas music is such a joyous and special way to get ready for Christ's "Birth." Come be part of the Celebration by joining a choir of your choice. "Joy to the World. The Lord Is Come!." God bless you all.

We especially need people to commit to weekends in January, July, August, and November. Please sign up with Cathy Copas. You may email me at [email protected], or call me at 203-988-1864.

If You Lose Power

Due to two recent major storms that caused people to lose power in their homes for an extended period of time, we want to make sure all in our congregation are taken care of the next time we are hit with this type of situation. If you find yourself in this situation again, please notify Michele Smith at the Church Office (203-269-4796) so she can try to connect you with someone in the church family who might be able to put you and your family up for a few days or point you to somewhere else that might be able to help. If you would be willing to open your home to someone during a time of power loss, please let Michele know so she can connect you with someone in need. Thank you.

Testimonies from the 2011 Women of Faith Conference

Robyn Spinaci: Just a few words to encourage you after a spirit-filled weekend at the Imagine Tour! One of the biggest messages of the weekend for me was that no matter what we're going through, no matter how much we feel like misfit toys, God loves us! He created us! No matter what kind of garbage we're carrying around, He holds us and shares it with us. His plans for us are greater than we can even IMAGINE. So stepping out with Him in faith is the greatest way we can live our lives for Him! My challenge to you is to think about your gift and step out for Christ. Think about what's tugging at your heart and DO IT! Live out the things that maybe you could only IMAGINE before! Cathy Copas: “Wow, Wow Wow, and that’s not a Bow Wow” The Women of Faith conference this year was amazing. The Lord Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, was revealed to each woman in attendance in her own personal and unique way. Some were blessed by the music, some the speakers, some the comedians, and some the person sitting next to them. The point is, whomever God used, we were touched. And I don’t mean touched in a silly way, but a deeper desire to seek Christ in our lives. Even I learned to lighten up and have fun because Jesus loves me more than I can imagine. We are so thankful to Robyn for organizing this event, and caring for us in the way that she does. We look forward to getting together in the near future, to share with each other and those who could not attend. Please keep your eyes and hearts open for an upcom-ing gathering of the FBC Women of Faith. Also, please plan to attend the conference next year entitled “Celebrate”. It is scheduled for November 2, and 3, 2012. Contact Robyn Spinaci at [email protected] to reserve a ticket.

We would love for you to join us.

Volunteer History at FBC

Ever since I have been coming to First Baptist fourteen years ago when we moved to Wallingford, I’ve volunteered in a number of areas and ministries. Where do I start? On Sundays, you might find me serving as Worship Host, in Nursery during the service, or in the Counting Room fol-lowing the service. I try to participate in the FBC Work Days every Spring and Fall. I enjoy the fellowship with oth-ers while helping to clean up and improve our Church home.

Since joining FBC, I have also been introduced to being a short-term missionary. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Gary Copas, our previous Coach of Out-reach, asked me to join the team he was putting together to help repair and rebuild homes damaged by the storm. I have gone back for a week every year since, and I have coordinated and led this trip the past two years to Texas and Louisiana. I have loved bringing my oldest daughter, Jessica, on this trip each year; and after the first trip, it has become our “father-daughter mission trip”.

One of my favorite volunteer ministries at FBC has been my involvement with the Do-minican Republic (DR) Mission Team. About five or six years ago, Josh Powers asked me if I would help out backstage with the annual fundraiser show that takes place every March at Sheehan High School. Now I coordinate all the backstage activities along with designing and putting the

sets together. The show taught me about the plight of the Haitians working in the sugar cane fields of the DR, and three years ago, I joined the DR Mission Team on their an-nual trip. On my first full work day, I accidentally fell into the run-off from the “banos” which was an auspicious way to start my first trip to the DR. It did not stop me from returning as I have been on the trip for the last two years as well. As long as I am able to help, I cannot imagine missing this trip for even one year.

Another area where I can use my construction capabilities is in support of my wife Susanne’s work as our Director of Discipleship. Two of her biggest programs throughout the year are the Christmas Pageant and Vacation Bible School. Each year has been a new challenge in transforming the Sanctuary into a concert stage, a river cascading down a mountain peak, a beach, a spaceship, a ranch, a cooking

show set, and a manger each year for the pag-eant. Many people have told me that it lets me show my creative side. Also, as Susanne likes to say, “FBC is paying for one Jordan but gets all four of us”.

My most recent and perhaps most rewarding volunteer activity was my participation on the Pastoral Search Committee. I enjoyed work-ing with the other Committee members and meeting some incredible pastoral candidates. I am very much looking forward to the start of Pastor Doug Valentine’s ministry at FBC.

Faith Story As I was growing up in Warwick, Rhode Island, I went to Church on Sundays mainly because my mother wanted me to go and not because I wanted to or felt that I needed to be there. Most of the credit for where I am on my walk with God I owe to my wife, Susanne. Not long after we started dating, I would go with her to church, Christmas and Easter at first; then more regularly after we were married (by Don Valentine, the father of Pastor Doug). I feel that I had a re-awakening once we moved to Wallingford and started to at-tend FBC more than 14 years ago. I have truly felt the pres-ence of the Lord at FBC in all the people that I have met and all of the activities that we are involved in. I have especially seen God at work on my mission trips to the Gulf Coast and the DR. I cannot imagine not giving at least a couple of weeks a year to such worthy causes.

Personal History My wife Susanne and I are part of the relocated Rhode Is-landers attending FBC. While the Sanders and Blains also have strong ties to the “Ocean State”, Susanne and I were both born and raised in Warwick, RI—not far from Rocky Point Park. We actually started dating during my senior year of high school, and that continued for most of my four years at Brown University in Providence. During the summer of 1985 after graduation, I started working for IBM in Newport, RI writing software used for the Trident submarine program. In 1987, Susanne and I were married and moved to Bristol, RI where we lived not far from the Fourth of July parade

route. Our time in Bristol was short as IBM moved us to CT in 1991 (the actual move was originally planned for the week-end when Hurricane Bob hit New England). I now under-stood that IBM is actually an acronym for “I’ve Been Moved”. Trying to stay close to the water, we settled in the Granite Bay section of Branford not far from Long Island Sound. Our next big change came in September of 1995 when Jessica was born. Being a new parent was such an amazing and humbling experience. With me working at the IBM Office in Southbury, Susanne working at Choate, and Jessica in daycare, it did not take long to realize that we had to move closer to one of our places of work. Wallingford won, and we moved here in 1997. With everything that we have accumulated over the years, I do not see us moving for a very long time. In 1998, we completed our family with the arrival of Jillian in August. It was also at this time that we followed the advice of Pat Stearns’ mother, Marion Campbell. We met Marion at FBC Branford where she sat behind us and occupied Jessica in her car seat during the Sunday service. When we told her we were moving to Wallingford, she told us that we needed to meet her daughter Pat and start attending FBC Wallingford. I cannot imagine my life or my family’s right now without my church family here at FBC. My spiritual life has never been so vibrant, and I owe much of Jessica and Jillian’s love for the Lord to the experiences they have had and the people that they have met at FBC Wallingford.

Master’s Manna (We support this ministry monthly!)

Master’s Manna is gearing up for the holiday season! On November 12, the Boy Scouts collected food throughout this part of the state to provide food to different local food pantries including us! Just in time for Thanksgiving!

The 5th Annual Turkey Tossing Tuesday is was held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 22 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Soup, sandwiches, and goodies were served continuously throughout the day. Last year 411 families came through Master’s Manna to obtain turkey, fixings, and weekly groceries. This year, we were anticipating close to 600 families.

On December 3, we will host our 2nd Annual Cookie Bake and Exchange. Folks interested in baking cookies, making assorted trays, and then taking them home or delivering to a friend, please come and bring your favorite recipe. We have been collecting and storing cookie ingredients. (We will save some cookies for the next event which is…

Our 3rd Annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Day on December 17. Through this event, we hope we are helping to teach children the act of giving to others. Children are provided with a “shopping token” for one adult and one child. They then are escorted to the shopping area (NO ADULTS ALLOWED!) to make their selections and have those items wrapped! (No peeking!!) Throughout the year, we have been mindful to set aside new or very-gently-used items for this day of shopping.

Work continues on our Free Dental Clinic. ALL equipment has been donated to date, including a patient chair and autoclave! Once completed, the volunteering dentists and hygienists will begin to treat folks that are already part of our Master’s Manna family.

It is grant-writing season which entails searching out new funding streams, creative thinking, and a few extra hours of pencil sharpening!

You are a blessing, and you have enabled us to continue to serve those who find themselves in troubled waters. Thank you for thinking of others in these days!

God bless you~ Cheryl Bedore

The first team meeting for the 2012 DR Trip will take place on Sunday, January 8 at 2 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Please see Cathy Copas if you would like to be a part of the Yankee Candle Fundraiser for the trip. The dates of the fundraiser are January 8 through February 12.

How We Help Those in Need in Our Community

At times, we receive phone calls at the church or the Church Office from someone who is asking for financial assistance. Although we do not keep funds here at the Church Office or in the Church building, we do support local ministries such as Master’s Manna each month. When we do receive a phone call from someone requesting financial assistance, we let them know that we are truly sorry that we do not offer financial assistance from the office, and we then refer them to Master’s Manna, 46 North Plains Industrial Road, Walling-ford - 203-927-5886. At Master’s Manna, they can receive food, clothing, dental care, meals, etc. If you do happen to answer the phone at the church building and it is someone asking for financial help, please share this information with them. Thank you so much.

Connecticut Baptist Homes - Wish List 2011

At Connecticut Baptist Homes, we recognize the importance of tradition and celebration, and we also realize that not all of our residents have families who are in a position to provide the little extras that add to the festivities at this time of the year. At our annual Christmas party, Santa and his helpers give each resident a gift bag, full to the brim with items they will enjoy. You can help us make this a special day for everyone through your generous donations of those items which are categorized on our “Wish List". Or... If you are pressed for time and would like to make a monetary donation, we would be happy to do the shopping for you. Please make your check payable to Connecticut Baptist Homes, designating the monies to be used for the “Christmas Wish List” in the memo line of your check.

Detach and leave your name and address with your donations.

We would like to send you a proper “THANK YOU”.

Meet Our Guest Speaker: Connie Salerno has been a counselor, a mentor, a Children’s Ministry Direc-tor, Women’s Ministry Leader, teacher, encourager, Small Group Director, Community Outreach Director, and so much more. Her strongest attribute is her love for people. She possesses a deep desire to see every believer activated and functioning in their God destiny. Although she has served in many different func-tions, her true passion is for the broken hearted and wounded soul. Connie has personally experienced the hope of God’s promises through the darkest of times. She was born with a genetic liver defect that threat-ened her life several times. During the pregnancy of her second child, she developed a severe bacterial infection due to the liver defect she had. This jeopardized her life and the life of her unborn child. God in His faithfulness saw them both through and Connie had a healthy baby boy. Though God’s promises to her have been challenged time and time again, she has seen the fulfillment of them all. She will encourage your heart, restore your hope, and help you believe again in your forgotten dreams.
