CARTER WOODSON MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITION/RENOVATION, HOPEWELL, VIRGINIAMoseley Architects was commissioned to help transform Carter G. Woodson Middle School into a state-of-the-art facility tomeet increasing student enrollment without demolishing the structures. Of utmost importance to the city was creating a newmain entry, eliminating the need for mobile classrooms, and linking the facility to the existing campus. The school had multipleentrances and the office was obscured in the middle of the school grounds. The office was relocated near the newlycreatedprominent main entrance. A circulation spine uses large expanses of clerestory windows and exposed steel construction tocreate a more inviting environment. In addition to upgrading the existing classroom spaces, the existing administration andmedia center spaces were converted to classroom space. A total of nine new classrooms were added, which include generause spaces, science rooms, special education rooms, and spaces for art and chorus. Site development and improvementsincluded new parking for staff and visitors, a new bus loop, and landscaping. Additionally, a public "rotunda" was created, which creates a gathering area for the students and provides opportunities for collaborative learning.
