“Because I Said So”
I’m turning into my mother.
This is not a conscious
decision… or altogether a
bad thing. My mother has grace, and compassion, and
always offers an encouraging word. It is shocking,
though, to hear my mother’s voice come out of my
mouth. This seems to happen most often when I am
speaking with my own daughter.
“But WHY, MOM???” she whines. Why do I have to
eat veggies? Why do I have to brush my hair? Why do
I have to go to bed?
The answers are obvious: So you grow big and strong.
So you don’t look like a hooligan. So you can get some
rest. These are the correct answers. But after 20
“whys,” a Mom can only take so much.
“BECAUSE I SAID SO!” I roar. Because I said so?
Where did that come from? My mind snaps back 20
years, remembering my own mother’s roar… and my
own whines. The phrase “Because I said so” is a
statement of last resort and exhaustion. It means “I’ve
dug in my heels and you’re not winning this one…
because I said so.”
I’ve heard “because I said so” pop up a lot in my
conversations recently, and not just with my daughter.
This phrase has also crept into my conversations with
God. “This program should work!” I rant. Or, “I want
to have compassion for only these people.” I have
definite ideas about what my life and “my church”
should look like. Why? Because I said so!
Yes, but what does God say? “Be still, and know that I
am God.” (Ps. 46:10)
Be still. Calm down. And learn what love and ministry
God calls us to unfurl. The answers aren’t surprising.
God calls us to live out the grace and compassion that
we already know in Him.
Thanks be to God for His encouraging Word.
