Imagine
John Lennon’s song “Imagine” invites the listener to imagine that there is no heaven or hell. He wrote;
“Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us
Above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today”
In fact, we need not use our imagination to know what such a society would look like, we, and he, need only exercise our memory. Hitler was an atheist who dabbled in the occult. Hitler and his close ally and inspiration, the atheist leader, Benito Mussolini, were admirers of the anti-Christian philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche's final book, published posthumously, was entitled “The Antichrist” because Nietzsche thought a strong vital leader should strive to be exactly the opposite of Jesus. The themes of Nietzsche's philosophy pervade the speeches and writings of the Hitler and Mussolini fascist regimes. Christianity, and other religious beliefs, were outlawed by atheist leaders like Stalin, Chairman Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Kim Il-sung, Fidel Castro and other communists. Communist societies officially asserted there is no heaven or hell and behaved accordingly. One need not “Imagine all the people living for today.” When Lennon penned those words we were living through the drug- and sex-fueled hedonism of the 60’s. We have seen what living for today has wrought here in America. Living for today means a life devoted to immediate pleasure at the expense of sacrificial love. Divorce, addiction, outbursts of violent passion, bankruptcy, pollution and greed are just some of the horrific results of the godless “live for today” philosophy.

“Imagine” has a nice melody and is useful to the extent that it summed up the philosophy of a self-indulgent generation. However, we see now the catastrophic results of the self-indulgence, rather than the self-sacrifice, of a generation that lived on imagination rather than simply learned from experience. The atheist philosopher George Santayana wrote that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I would add that those who can’t even learn from the present are just plain condemned. We see what a perverse, atheistic imagination has created but still remain oblivious to the spiritual destruction of the atheist delusion that there is no heaven or hell.
Spencer
Luke 12:16 “Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

FREEDOM
What a great month the youth have had celebrating the end of the school year! For the last
five Wednesdays we have enjoyed pizza, party games and praising our Lord at our weekly
Praise Parties! What a great kick-off to summer, and to the celebrating that we all will enjoy
on the 4th of July.
When we think about the 4th of July, what comes to mind is the usual list: picnics or BBQs,
fun get-togethers and fireworks. All those things are great, for sure, but what really belongs
at the top of the list is the celebration of freedom. Freedom is what the 4th of July really
represents. This freedom that we enjoy, though, is not a result of our own actions. Rather,
it’s a gift that we enjoy because of the selfless sacrifice of our forefathers. We don’t have to
pay for it, but it was certainly not free. It was paid for by those who came before us and
sacrificed for our benefit.
What an amazing gift freedom is, and definitely worth celebrating. We as Christians, therefore,
should be celebrating every day the freedoms that we have in Christ. We have freedom from
sin, freedom from shame, freedom to live as God’s beloved children, and freedom to enjoy an
eternity in Heaven. All this, that we neither earn nor have to pay for, because of the sacrifice
that Jesus made on the cross!
That is real freedom, and worth celebrating! Happy 4th of July everyone, and enjoy the
fireworks!
In His Service,
Heidi

SPLINTERS FROM THE BOARD Elevator Project
The Board would like the congregation to know where we are at this particular time regarding the “elevator project.” In February of 2017, the Church Board approved a request to raise funds for the construction costs and installation of an elevator. At this time, we have received approximately $100,000 in designated donations toward this project. These funds have been gifted over and above our regular tithes and plates.
It has been determined that a study needs to be conducted by a licensed structural engineer, researching on the best options for our church building and to obtain as much information as possible. There are concerns about how the elevator will impact the structural integrity of our building, and whether we will face issues concerning hazardous materials. We are also researching the cost of repairs, annual inspections and certifications, and whether our insurance premiums will be impacted.
Some of you may be wondering why the elevator project is taking so long. As the Church Board, it is our job to think about the overall picture and impact when considering the current and future needs of this congregation and the church building.
Historically our Church Board has not contracted for any major project without the funds to complete the project first being approved and allocated and/or all funds being raised by the congregation. Such large projects have included the bus garage, new roof over the chapel and the sanctuary, window renewal, and replacement of the steeple roof.
The Board unanimously voted to appoint an ad hoc Elevator Project Committee to continue the good work that the Trustees have begun.
We ask for your prayers, as we listen to God’s guidance and continue on the path we know He has chosen for our congregation. We thank you for your patience as we work for a successful completion to this project. If you have questions please talk with Board Chair, Lois Hornberger.
