A Christmas Diet
Over the last couple months of this year, many
of us struggle with or have given up on the proper
eating habits that we have held to over the course of
the year due to the holiday gatherings and the great,
wonderful, and tasty creations that have been created
to consume. The other day I ran across some advice
given from an expert on eating and dieting. The
advice given was this: “Do not concentrate on the
amount or volume of the food you are eating, but
concentrate on enjoying the taste of it, savor it, relish
it.” In following this, the idea is that we will not take
as large a portion and will then not eat too much;
instead we will actually enjoy the flavors of the food
prepared with more appreciation. This sounds like
some decent advice for eating without becoming
gluttonous, yet I think we can also find a lesson from
that thought as we think about the Christmas season.
I am no great economist, but I can look out over
this nation of ours and see many people that are not
feeling like they are better off now then they were
several years ago. The world is in a time of unrest and
volatile situations. People are working extra hours

and often extra jobs just to make ends meet. It would
seem that there is less money to spend and citizens are
reluctant to spend the money they do have because
they are unsure of what the future holds.
Unemployment/underemployment is at some of the
highest rates seen. Jobs are being lost or at least hours
are being cut. Healthcare is a nightmare. Illogical
violence is breaking out in parts of the states. Our entire
nation is in major economic chaos with spending and
the debt out of control, and our government doesn’t
seem to be making the right decisions to turn things
around.
So why not during this cherished time together of
Christmas this year, apply, somewhat, the advice of the
dietician expert. “Don’t concentrate on the volume,
number, or expense of gifts and festivities, but let us
concentrate instead upon enjoying what we do give and
get!” No time is better than now to emphasize the true,
spiritual meaning of the celebration of what Christmas is
about rather than its external traditions and secular
activities.
“And the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for
behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall
be for all the people; for today in the city of David there
has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the
Lord.” (Luke 2:10, 11). God has given us the greatest of
gifts in Christ Jesus… salvation from our sins in this
world. With great joy throughout the year, let us
treasure and daily remember the gift of a Savior given to
us.

May we cherish this gift to the fullest, but strive in our
purpose as Christians to take this gift to others who have
not yet accepted the forgiveness that is offered.

Frances Nichols Love
Our collection of Love paintings that we have all around the church building will be on loan to the Art Association of Randolph County for approximately six weeks. The Art Association will be featuring artist Frances Nichols Love along with another artist, Elizabeth Keesling from January 15 through February 20 at the historic Arts Depot in Union City. We have been asked if we would be interested in “sharing” our Love paintings with the public. All are encouraged to come to the reception on Opening Night (January 15) from 7:00 - 9:00pm. Paintings will receive attention from the News Gazette of Winchester.
