Transforming Livesby Ann Woodall

This is Jack's 4th year to be with our ministry. He is now a 5th grader at Arlington. We first got to know Jack during a tutoring session at the lot on Hatton Street, where he still lives with his stepfather and sister. Mike Simmons is his tutor/mentor. Mike and Nan are wonderful examples of how mentoring is as important as tutoring in our program. Since Jack expressed an interest in attending our church, he has been one of our most faithful church goers. Besides WINGS every Wednesday, he regularly attends the 9 a.m. Sunday Service, as well as Sunday School, Children's Choir, Kids Who Care Club, Vacation Bible School, Music Camp, and even Lakeshore this summer.

Jack depends on church members for transportation, and fortunately, they are happy to pick him up and take him home. He has expressed an interest in being a member of our church and being baptized in the near future. As Mike and Nan have encouraged him to prepare for his future and to take schoolwork seriously, they are also providing the means for him to be diagnosed by Star Center for learning impediments. They go way beyond one night a week in helping Jack. Mike even taught him to swim at the Labry's pool to prepare him for Lakeshore.

On Wednesdays, Jack will be waiting for the FUMC van, driven by Mike and Nan to take him to the church for WINGS. First United Methodist Church plays a very influencial role in this young man's life. Perhaps the WINGS acronym is true to its words: Witnessing IN God's Sanctuary. Praise be to God!

Honoring the Birth of BabiesWhat is the process? In honor of the birth of babies born to

local members who attend FUMC, the church orders and pays for rosebuds which are placed in the sanctuary. Also, an announcement is placed in the bulletin. A grandparent may request a rosebud for a grandchild, whose parents are not attending FUMC or who live out of town. At their request, the church will order the rosebud and bill the grandparent for the cost, currently $12.95. The church is happy to place an announcement in the bulletin without the purchase of a rosebud.

Tricia Odom, Ministerial Assistant, is the contact person for ordering rosebuds. Please call her at 422-4002 when there is a birth in your family. The church rejoices in the celebration of new life!

A Special Gift to the Children of FUMC

FUMC Kids’ NewsProverbs 22:6 - Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Presented by Barbara and Ben Lifsey and now hanging in the Children’s Worship Area.

This painting, for the children of First United Methodist Church of Jackson, TN, is a reminder that each one of you is a part of the world-wide family of God. The original oil painting was created for the children in Nicaragua. It hangs in the Laureles Sur United Methodist Church that Jackson FUMC helped establish.

In 2008, the FUMC Mission Team travelled to Nicaragua to begin work on the church. The many

special memories of Nicaraguan children involved in the building process provided the perfect image for the canvas.

In the summer of 2010, Barbara completed the 20”x 64”painting. When the mission team returned to finish the work they had started in 2008, Rev. Cecil Kirk hand-carried the completed painting, reconstructed the frame and presented it to Laureles Sur United Methodist Church.

A Note of AppreciationMany thanks for the prayers, cards, concerns, and contribution to our family in the recent loss of our son, Michael.
