Dick Nunn Sunday School Class – 76 Years Young!by Barbara Weaver (assisted by Betty Nunn Morris)

In the early fall of 1939, there was no class for “Young Marrieds’” at First Church – in fact there was no class at all for couples. On a Sunday morning, Anna Sue Hicks ran into Johnny and Jane Parham and asked if they were interested in forming such a class for the “Young Marrieds” to study Bible lessons. They liked the idea and began talking to other couples about it. Together with George and Lena Bradford, they convinced Dick Nunn to assume the duties of teacher and the Dick Nunn Class was officially formed.

The only stipulation Dick made to them was that they must work to make the class grow and become a success. The class indeed grew and prospered. The first president was Curtiss Sullivan, and then in order was Billy Harris, Bob Copeland, Walter Barnes, George Bradford and Johnny Parham. In WWII, many members were called into service. It was during this time (1944-45) that the class elected it’s first female president, Merry Dell Woods. After the war, those former members returned to Jackson and again assumed their responsibilities in the class and in the church.

In 1949, the “new annex” to the church was completed. Some members will remember this as the “old” chapel and Sunday school portion behind the sanctuary that was torn down in 2000. That year (1949) the average attendance of the class was 57. The class continued to grow and first hit the 100 mark on Easter of 1951 – with 113 present. Shortly after that, the class moved into Newman Center, which was the only vacant

space large enough for the class and their piano.

In 1955-56, the class reached 165 members and had an average attendance of 98. A written history from the 1950’s stated that the Dick Nunn Class represented at least 10% of the attendance each Sunday at Sunday School as well as Church. The class directory from 1964 listed 166 members.

Not only has the class been active in the church, but also in the city of Jackson’s business and political side. At one time in the early 50’s, the presidents of four of Jackson’s Civic Clubs were from the Dick Nunn Class. For the first several years of the “Young Man of the Year” award, the honoree was from this class.

In the late seventies, Dick retired from his teaching position, but he along with Blanche, remained active in the class as long as they were able. Other teachers from past years are Dr. Jim Price, Larry Butler, Rev. Lloyd Ramer, and Rev. Lawrence Hay. There may have been others who taught before Jim and I joined the class in 1982. Today our teachers are Jerry Woodall (1st Sunday), Mike Butler (2nd Sunday), Betty Morris

(3rd Sunday), Wes Clayton (4th Sunday) and Florence Griffin (5th Sunday). Nancy Rahm is our pianist. We are so grateful for their faithfulness. We open each Sunday with a song and prayer, as well as an update on members. Then each teacher delivers their lesson on any biblical topic they choose.

Over the years, the class has had many members who “passed through” as they moved on to other cities, as they were transferred with their jobs and through death. Most of the core members continued to live in Jackson and remained in the class

and church. Some of the charter members, along with the Parhams and Bradfords, were Billy and Barbara Harris, Martha Alice and Walter Barnes, Anne and Jamie McLemore, Aline and Raymond Hammond, Dot and Pierce Winningham, and Martha and Les Jaco. Current members BettyLu Marsden, Barton Webb, Frances Spencer, Grace Lett, Mary Jo Williams, Inez Burke, Edna Rice, Bettie Graves, Marian Martin, Bettie Graves and Ginny Sculley are on a list of early members. (Side note: the cross that hangs in the sanctuary behind the choir was hand made by Billy Harris.) The memory wall lists 121 names of deceased members.

We are smaller now as time has taken its toll on our members but we are still faithful. Twelve “active” members who are able to attend regularly are BettyLu Marsden, Barton Webb, Elizabeth and Bobby Whitt, Connie Krone, Edna Rice, Willie and Fran Chandler, Frances Spencer, Florence Griffin, and Jim and Barbara Weaver.

Our inactive members who are not able to attend due to health conditions are Grace Lett, Mary Jo Williams, Beth Standley, Inez Burke, Ginny Sculley, Margaret O’Dell, Elaine Dooley, Frances Pipkin, Bettie Graves, Marion Martin, and Peggy Jimerson.

In the continuing spirit of fun and fellowship, each week we sing “Happy Birthday” to all members, both active and inactive, who have birthdays that week. Frances Spencer is faithful in calling to check on inactive members at least monthly. We have a class party in the summer and during the Christmas season at the home of Frances Spencer and the Chandlers. Most recently, thirty of us celebrated our 76th year anniversary including members and their family, as well our teachers and their spouses. We also celebrated birthdays of Barton Webb, Inez Burke and Connie Krone with cake.

Yes – the Dick Nunn Class was the first “Young Married” class at “First Church.” A marvelous spirit of fellowship was one of the motivating forces behind this class. That spirit of fellowship, along with a desire to stay connected, has persisted to this day and is the main reason for the success of the class allowing us to remain faithful these 76 years!

Seated: Barton Webb, Inez Burke, Frances Spencer and Frances Pipkin. Standing: Florence Griffin, Wes Clayton, Mike Butler, Elizabeth Whitt, Bobby Whitt, Bettylu Marsden, Margaret Odell, Jim Weaver, Barbara Weaver, Betty Morris, Connie Krone, Willie Chandler and Fran Chandler.

Pastor’s Bible Studyfor Men and Women

resumes September 2!Wednesdays

10:00-11:00 a.m. Room 118/Religion for Life

Join Jeff Rudy for the study of the Letter of James.

Morning Bible Study

Martin Luther once called the letter of James “an epistle of straw,” calling into question whether it even belonged in the Bible. Yet James’ letter has stood the test of time, is filled with practical wisdom in terms of how we put our faith into action and is also a letter in which the author doesn’t mince words. Want to know more about why Luther said those words, but more importantly how we can grow in our walk of faith? Join Pastor Jeff Rudy this fall in the Wednesday morning Bible Study at 10:00am in Room #118 as we draw deeply from the wisdom of James.
