Startled by God: Widsom From Unexpected PlacesBook review by Jennifer Trently

“We need to make regular appointments with God to have the eyes of heart examined, and when necessary change the prescription of our glasses. Allowing our injured eyes to be healed in the loving grace of Jesus keeps God and grace as part of our lived experience not just polite ideas,” writes Joe McHugh in his newly published book, Startled By God: Wisdom From Unexpected Places. Throughout the 122 pages of Startled by God, McHugh’s stories describe his experiences of recognizing God in the ordinary and mundane. He challenges his readers to do the same and almost in every chapter; suggests practices to deepen our connection with God in our everyday life.

McHugh divides Startled by God into three parts, “What? So What? and Now What?” with each part bringing a different challenge. What? focuses on what McHugh calls, “Dilemmas of Perspective” or how we see God in our lives. So What? or “Dilemmas of Discipleship” confronts the reader with examining the meaning of God in their lives. Now What? or “Dilemmas of Discernment” engages the reader in thinking about what their response to God is going to be. However, McHugh’s book focuses not on a program that one must follow, but rather on developing one’s own unique relationship with God. McHugh desires his readers to claim Jesus’ healing for themselves and begin to discover the living God where they live.

While it would be possible, since it is so short, for one to simply read the entire book in one or two sittings, Startled by God is designed more to be savored. Each chapter can stand on its own. One can feel free to choose the order of reading. McHugh encourages readers to read the chapter and ponder it before reading another. Experiencing God is McHugh’s desire for his readers.

In keeping with his focus of finding God in a meaningful way, McHugh writes in simple, everyday language. He approaches sharing his wisdom in a humble, graceful manner that illuminates timeless truths for the reader. His stories make the book relational and accessible for all.

Having had Joe McHugh as an instructor for a class through Perkins School of Theology, I can tell you that Joe conveys the same humility and desire for others to meet God in person as he does in his writing. Joe is not interested in getting more people to study theology but rather in having more people be “startled by God” in those everyday places like coffee shops and hair salons.

He writes, “Prayer is a way in which God can deal with us directly, giving the stories of our lives a chance to mix with God’s great, silent story of gracious, forgiving love.” Startled by God: Wisdom from Unexpected Places, refreshed and challenged my heart, mind and soul. It exudes God’s love and draws you into to wanting more.

Available in paperback and e-reader editions, I would recommend this book for people from 16 to 106; and for seekers to seasoned disciples regardless of lifestyle or occupation. If savored, Startled by God offers new possibilities and fresh insights for all.

Why go on a foreign mission?Foreign and local missions energize the church. FUMC is very active in local missions. This trip to Haiti gives us the opportunity to serve and spread God’s loving care far from home.

Not everyone can participate in the work trip, however we can all join as partners in the mission. We can do this through prayer and encouragement for the team.

St. Francis of Assisi wrote, “Preach the Gospel... and if necessary, use words.”

Most of us avoid having a conversation about these issues with the people we love. Through this event, the Stephen Ministry of Jackson First United Methodist Church hopes to help people have conversations about care at the end of life, death, and their final wishes related to this life. The goal is to help people have these conversations in a more normal way - particularly while they are healthy and not facing dire circumstances.

The three-hour session utilizes materials produced by the Church Health Center, including a video and a document called "Five Wishes". Through these resources, along with table dialogue and discussion by a panel of health and legal practitioners on different end of life issues, participants will learn how to share their own wishes with people who will walk alongside them when they face decisions.

Christmas Storeby Sue Harvey

Reelfoot Rural Ministries (RRM)was founded by two United Methodist preachers' wives in 1963, to help the people in the poorest area of Tennessee. Their vision has evolved into a daycare center, a thrift store, a place for seniors to come and enjoy a hot lunch and some companionship and a catalyst for mission work on the homes of the poorest in the area, among other things.

FUMC Jackson has been collecting toys for the Christmas Store at RRM for as long as anyone can remember. The families are screened prior to their visit to the store where they are able to choose four gifts for each of their children, from three categories of gifts-large, medium and small. They are asked to pay a minimal amount, so that they are not receiving a handout, but are able to provide Christmas for their children at a price they can afford. I cannot imagine the

joy of these parents, who otherwise would not be able to do so, to provide Christmas for their children because of RRM. They are so appreciative.

Food items and gifts for seniors are also encouraged. Examples of senior gifts are gloves, lotions, socks, etc. Throughout the month of November, I will be sending gift suggestions in my emails and on our jacksonfumc.org website, under missions and then to monthly missions, there are several suggestions for each age group, too. We will take the gifts to RRM on Monday, December 2nd and I wish you could all be there to hear them say when we pull up to unload, "Oh, First Church, Jackson! We were counting on you!"

We invite any of you who can to join us. We will be stopping at the lake for a fish lunch to celebrate, following the drop off.

In our plenty, help us help others who are so needy.

Items may be placed in the Mission Chests located in the church lobbies through the end of the month. Cash donations or gifts by check, may be placed in the offering plate or left in the church office.

The wooden Sanctuary doors pictured above, to our knowledge, have been in place since 1913. Due to their unique construction, replacement will be costly. We are looking at both a temporary and a long term solution.1) Rebuilding the existing doors and replacing the hardware in hopes of getting an additional 3-5 years of service. The estimated cost of this is $20,000.2) Replacing these doors with high-quality wooden doors. The estimated cost of this is $80,000-$90,000.A special fund has been established for this purpose. Should you wish to make a contribution, checks may be made to First United Methodist Church designated for “Sanctuary Doors.”
