Book Review: “Picturing the Face of Jesus: Encountering Christ Through Art”by Jennifer Trently
Picturing the Face of Jesus: Encountering Christ Through Art by Beth Booram is an excellent book for group or individual study. Published by Abingdon Press, it is arranged into six chapters, each covering a different face of Jesus. The study
can be extended for eight weeks if one uses the introduction and epilogue as separate chapters.
What makes this study unique is the eight pictures of Jesus located in the middle of the book. Each picture is a painting or drawing of Jesus from a different museum collection. Some are famous and others are not so famous. Booram in each chapter connects the pictures with a story of Jesus from scripture.
For me, I like the connections Booram makes between the pictures, scriptures and our own lives. Each chapter invites one to experience Jesus through reading, visualizing, praying, reflecting and discussing. She reinforces the idea that building a relationship with Jesus is not something to be rushed. Her challenges push readers to go deeper with their minds, hearts and souls. The book caused me to further examine how I apply scripture to my own life. I also thought about how much I let Jesus into my heart and mind.
The pictures are an excellent guide to viewing Jesus as having emotions. Looking at the faces of Jesus in each picture allowed me to experience in a new way Jesus’ humanness I
considered how often I ignore the human side of Him paying attention only to the Divine.
Booram invites readers to confess their own feelings and longings to God. The book stresses that only when we are honest with God can we experience healing and reach out to others. It caused me to examine how I follow Jesus’ example in my interactions with others.
Many of the questions asked throughout the book are questions that many of us will wrestle with throughout our lives. Therefore, this study is one that can be returned to again and again. The material is inexhaustible. There are endless possibilities; one could go through the book using it only for contemplation or for discussion or for journaling or for scripture study.
I first encountered this book as a study we used for our Genesis Sunday School Class. Since then, I have used it in my own devotional life and have realized that there is much further study I can do. Encountering Jesus through art and scripture is a powerful tool for deepening one’s faith.
Even though Picturing the Face of Jesus is only 112 pages in length; its riches are immeasurable. The short chapters and simple concepts are what make it accessible for all regardless of life experience.
Considering its wealth of material and richness of art; Picturing the Face of Jesus is very affordable. It is available in paperback for $6.00 and through the Kindle store for $9.99. For any individual or group looking for a non-traditional study, I highly recommend this book. Its affordability and accessibility make it well worth your time and money.

Ten Tips for Teens
Fall is here... time for school, football, cheerleading, going out on Friday nights. It’s easy to remember how much fun I had in high school. Ah, but I also recall my sixteen year old self stressed to the max from Physics; repeatedly failing to hit a softball in front of my whole PE class, and a teacher who made me so nervous I pulled my eyebrows out cramming for a Latin exam in 10th grade. If you’re in the 13-19 age group you experience a huge amount of stress, from yourself and others. Parents and teachers tend to forget this part of growing up; we just want to remember the good things. Fact is: Growing up isn’t easy, but it’s easier to handle when your body is strong. It’s never too early to begin living a healthy life style — and this has nothing to do with what size you wear or how ripped you look with your shirt off. It has everything to do with how you feel.
Your teenage years are often when you’re the healthiest you’ll ever be. You are growing or just finishing up growing, (if you’re a guy you have the potential to grow until 21). Most likely any unhealthy habits you have haven’t taken a toll on your body yet. Parents and teens take this for granted but they shouldn’t. Now is the time in life to start developing habits that will benefit you years down the road. Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think because little things make a BIG difference. Call this list 10 Health Habits to Adopt before you turn 20:
1. Buckle up and don’t text while you’re driving. The sad fact is car accidents are the number one cause of death in your age group. Texting is quickly becoming a major factor in fatal crashes. If your parents text and drive, call them out on it.
2. Learn to love vegetables and your body will thank you for it. From giving us vitamins to making our organs work more efficiently, veggies have huge health benefits. Who knows... just because you hated the baby food spinach when you were one year old doesn’t mean you’ll hate a spinach salad now.
3. Protect your beautiful skin (and that means you guys too) by using sun screen. Skin cancer is on the rise, most likely from tanning beds. It’s no fun to go to the dermatologist every month to have old lady
age spots looked at and cut off. I know from personal experience.
4. Skip the sugary drinks like soda or too much Gatorade. You do need sports drinks when you plan to sweat a lot; otherwise stick to water. Make it a habit to drink eight glasses per day.
5. Get active! This doesn’t mean you have to be captain of the football team. How many of your parents still play football or cheer? Most likely none; but, I’ll bet they walk, play golf, or do zumba. If you’re not into team sports try yoga, biking, bowling. Exercise is a good way to recharge.
6. Get enough sleep!!! Most teenagers are sleep deprived! School takes eight hours daily. Add sports, after school jobs, social obligations, church, homework… whew, what a grueling schedule! It’s hard to block out time for sleep, but if you do, you’ll see payoffs in how you feel and perform.
7. Floss your teeth. Sounds weird, but flossing after brushing not only prevents cavities, it helps block bacterial infections as you get older, especially in your heart.
8. Limit your screen time. Constantly playing video games can impair thinking in the human brain. Keep you inside too much and cause sleep problems. Turn the screen off at least an hour before bedtime, even if you’re doing computer homework to improve sleep.
9. Don’t smoke (cigarettes or anything else) Burning up your lungs with smoke is the
fastest way known to damage your health.
10. Last but not least — STOP WORRYING! No one can be perfect... not even your parents. Stress steals fun from your life and harms your health. It’s linked to skin problems (HELLO — exam time breakouts), stomach and headaches, insomnia, weight problems etc. Do yourself a favor, whether your 13 or 19, make it a habit to chill out-whether its 30 seconds to take a deep breath, an hour to talk about your stress with someone you trust, or a whole day with nothing to do. Guess why? God loves you and he thinks you deserve it... and indeed you do.
