judging

winner recognition • Winners announced at the NKBA Design Competition Awards Ceremony during KBIS 2019.

• Winning project photographs will be on display at the NKBA Booth at KBIS 2019.

• Featured in NKBA Magazine, NKBA websites and social media properties.

• Included in a national press release to consumer and trade media.

• Possible features in local and national consumer and professional publications.

The competition entries will be scored on the following fi ve core areas:

1. Creativity 2. Presentation 3. Design Planning 4. Elements & Principles of Design 5. Safety & Ergonomics

At least two of the industry experts selected to judge is either a Certifi ed Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD®), a Certifi ed Kitchen Designer (CKD®), a Certifi ed Bath Designer (CBD®) or a Certifi ed Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD®).

Judges are not eligible to enter the competition in the year of their service. Judges adhere to the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards when scoring entries. Note: Projects produced within the judges’ company are not eligible.

• The individual entrant must be the Designer of Record on the project and must be an NKBA member. Non-members must join the NKBA to enter the competition. Co-designers are not required to be members of the NKBA. (Maximum of three co-designers).

• If the entrant is not the owner of the business that billed the project, owner approval is required for eligibility. The owner is not required to be a member of the NKBA.

• The project(s) submitted must have been installed between January 1, 2017 and July 2, 2018.

• Enter the project into the one Category that best represents your project. You may enter as many projects as you would like that fi t into the eleven diff erent Categories.

• If your project qualifi es for a Specialty Award, it is to be entered in addition to the Categories on the same entry form and no additional fees are required.

• A new entry form is required for each project submitted and is to be completed in full. Each entry requires a separate fee.

• Entries must be received by July 2, 2018 with the entry fee included.

• Early bird entry fee for projects received between April 2 – May 31, 2018 is FREE for the fi rst entry and $75 for proceeding entries. Standard entry fee of $100 applies for projects received between June 1, 2017 – July 2, 2018.

• All identifying design and fi rm information on fl oor plans, elevations, design statement and photographs must be removed or blacked out.

required materials checklist Completed Online Entry Form - Read Instructions Carefully

Click on the online entry form available on NKBA.org and enter all the requested information. While fi lling out the form, you will create Project ID number in the required fi eld (this is coded with proper initials from the legend and your phone number). Entry Fee (once you click “Submit” on your entry form you will be redirected to Shopify for payment) After payment, you will receive an email containing a link with instructions to upload all required materials into structured folders. Do not relabel folder structure! Your unique folder will include subfolders for: -Project Photos (up to ten – be sure to label one winning photo with a “W”) -Design statement -Floorplans and elevations -Headshot -Bio -Specifi cation form -Client property release form (print PDF form, sign, scan, add to folder) -Photography release form (print PDF form, sign, scan, add to folder) -Business owner form (print PDF form, sign, scan, add to folder)

Reasons for DisqualificationIf any materials are omitted or if required criteria is not met, the entry will be disqualifi ed. No notifi cation will be given. The NKBA reserves the right to disqualify a project before, during, or after the contest judging. Entry fees will not be refunded, and entry materials will not be returned. To avoid disqualifi cation, please adhere closely to all competition guidelines and submit the following materials in one digital submission.

design statement requirements • All design statements must be typed • Do not include any identifying member information such as: -client name - business name -client location - business locationIf submitting a project to be judged for any of the awards listed to the right, please incorporate the specifi c information into your Design Statement.To present your entry in the best way, please use the following guidelines to assist in creating a concise, eff ective design statement. This will help to ensure that the judges have a good understanding of your project. The following is meant to help guide you in creating an eff ective design statement. It can be written as a narrative, a comprehensive bulleted list, or a combination of both.

Please use this as a guide when preparing your design statement.

Explain your project in a descriptive, 200-400 word statement that outlines client needs objectives, design philosophy, challenges, solutions, and special features.

Using the references below, create a brief overview of your project.

Creativity is the name of the game. The sky is the limit with this category. Submit a digital rendering, scanned hand sketch, or a video showcasing your creative genius. Concepts can include McMansions to a Tiny Homes. Accepted formats (jpg, pdf, mp4). Designs must be functional non-existent spaces. Dream big!
