Recipe

Chocolate Brownies by Daniel and Natalie (P4-7 Banchory Devenick)

Ingredients

• 250g unsalted butter

• 200 g chocolate – we’re using milk chocolate but you can use whatever chocolate you want

• 80g cocoa powder

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 4 large free range eggs

• plain flour

• 350g caster sugar

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Line a 30cm/12inch rectangular baking tin with greaseproof paper.

1.Chop the butter into cubes and then put into a large bowl with the chocolate over simmering water, then melt the chocolate and butter cubes until smooth.

2.Meanwhile in a separate bowl, sieve the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and caster sugar and add to the chocolate and butter mix. Stir together well.

3.In another bowl/jug, beat eggs together and then add to the chocolate mix and stir until you have a silky consistency.

4.Pour the brownie mix into the baking tin and place in oven for around 20 – 25 minutes. You don’t want to overcook the brownies so unlike cakes, you don’t want a skewer to come out clean as you want them to be gooey in the middle!

The Cup Game

By Calvin (P5C)

Number of players: 4-6 people

Age: 8+

Equipment needed: 110 plastic cups, a dice, a 2 minute timer.

How to play: To start the game everyone says a number in between 1 and 6 out loud.

Someone rolls the dice and whatever it lands on, the person who picked that number goes first.

Players use the cups to stack them one on top of the other. They stop when the timer runs out. Then, they roll the dice to see who goes next.

Everyone takes a turn.

If the tower falls at any point in the game, then that player is out.

Count how many cups are in each tower. The 2 towers with the most cups then go head to head. You use the cups from the smaller towers, reset the timer and add the extra cups onto the tallest towers until one fall. The last tower standing is the winner.

Short Story

Timmy the Troll

“Oh no sorry” said Timmy in embarrassment, after just bumping into someone. As you can probably tell, Timmy is a very clumsy and a forgetful troll. He lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere surrounded by tall green trees called Maplane. People there don’t like Timmy very much because he is always doing silly things. Once, when he was at his neighbours house, he forgot to turn the tap off after washing his hands and flooded the house! He is really nice; he opens doors for people and washes their cars for free. Even though it didn’t seem like it, Timmy was sad. The one thing that puts a smile on Timmy's face is his best friend Pip - a fluffy yellow duck.

Today, Timmy was going to meet Pip at the pond. He had a fabulous idea to go on an adventure together. He ran with his little short legs to the pond. When he saw Pip, he said, "Come on Pip, let’s go on an adventure!”

Pip flapped his little wings in excitement and off they went. They went up to the highest hill they could see. It took a long time. At the top, the grass was soft and green with little pink flowers growing in it. Timmy said he could see for miles. Then Timmy and Pip decided to see who could roll down the hill the fastest. They felt dizzy and a little sick like they were on a roller coaster when they got to the bottom. They didn’t know who won so they called it a draw and decided they would do it again another day.

As they skipped home, they laughed and giggled at how much fun they had. They both couldn't wait to have another adventure again soon.

Recipe

Homemade Pizzas by Taylor (P7A)

Method

Pizza dough

Add flour to a large bowl. Add salt and yeast to the flour and mix together. Slowly add water and mix until combined. Knead dough for a couple of minutes and roll into a ball. Cover bowl and place into a dry warm place to rise for at least 1-2 hours.

Check the dough after 1-2 hours it should be double the size Knead the dough for another couple of minutes, this is to get any air out that can cause bubbles in the pizza crust. Dust a baking tray with flour, this stops the dough sticking as it cooks. Roll out dough to required size and thickness.

Toppings

Pre heat the oven at 180 degrees Spread out the sauce evenly to cover the dough to the edges add more if you like lots of sauce! Grate the cheese and sprinkle over the pizza sauce evenly. Chop the bacon, pepper and cooked chicken then place on top of the cheese. Cut up the mozzarella and place in between the other toppings so it will melt evenly Finally place the pizza in the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes.

Famous People

Elvis Aaron Presley

By Cameron (P6/7)

The king of rock and roll or simply known as ‘the king’

Presley was born 8th of January 1935 in Tupelo Mississippi. He relocated to Memphis, Tennessee with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began in 1954. He was recording at Sun Records with producer

Sam Phillips who wanted to bring African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on an acoustic rhythm guitar accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black was a pioneer of rockabilly and up-tempo backbeat-driven fusion of country music rhythm-blues. In 1955, drummer D.J Fontana joined to complete Presley’s classic quartet. Presley’s first single, Heartbreak Hotel was released in 1956 and it became a number one hit. In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love me Tender. He was then drafted into military service in 1958. He relaunched his record career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He held a few concerts however, guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960’s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums. In 1968 following a 7year break from live performances, he returned to the stage which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcasted around the world from Hawaii. Years of prescription drug abuse compromised his health and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42.

Presley was the best-selling solo music artist of all time. He was commercially successful in many genres including pop country R&B adult contemporary and gospel.

He won 3 Grammy’s, received the Grammy lifetime achievement award at the age of 36 and he got inducted in many Music Halls of Fame. He holds the record, for the most RIAA certified gold and platinum albums. In 2018 Presley was awarded the presidential medal of freedom.

Objective

Not to be left with the “Porty Pink Letter!” card.

Play

Shuffle the cards and deal them all out to the players. This may mean that some players have more than others and if only a few people are playing they will have loads of cards in their hand! Next, all players look at their cards and remove any pairs (matching cards) that they have. Place these cards face up in the middle of the table. The youngest player goes first and play then proceeds in a clockwise direction. Player one fans out his cards and holds them face down so that no one can see what they are. He then offers them to the next player, who randomly takes a card. If the second player can use this card to match up another pair in his hand, he discards that pair too. Otherwise, he keeps that card. He then holds his cards face down in a fan and offers them to the next player. The first player to get rid of all their cards is the winner and shouts… “Call me The Head Teacher!”

Play continues with the rest of the players matching pairs and discarding them until only one player is left with the “Porty Pink Letter!” card. They lose and the game is over.

Short Story

Holly and Arthur’s Trip to the Museum

By Sadie (P4H)

It was a cold and wet day.  Holly and Arthur woke up and looked out of the window and saw puddles everywhere. Holly and Arthur went downstairs and they saw their mum in the kitchen. She was wearing a white flowery dress and her long blonde hair in a ponytail. She was making packed lunches. Holly and Arthur looked confused. It was not a school day they thought, so why is mum making them? “Get dressed!” mum said. “We are going on a trip.” “Where are we going?” said Holly, looking very confused.  “We are going to the museum.” Holly said to Arthur. “Let’s get ready now.” Holly and Arthur ran up-stairs, Holly put on her pink and white dress and Arthur wore a blue and white top and striped trousers.

Now in the car lets go to the museum. “Here we are now. What do you want to do?” “I want to go to the time travel room,” said Holly. “Okay let’s go!” said Mum. Then Mum said, “I will be back in a minute okay?” said mum. Holly said to Arthur, “Let’s go look around.” Arthur said, “Yes let’s go.” “Look!” said Arthur. “A time machine. Let’s see if it works?”

“Wow where are we?” said Holly. “I think we are in the time of the Romans? Look, gladiators! Wow let’s look around.” “What do you like here?” asked Holly. “I like the music,” said Arthur. “Let’s get something to eat,” said Holly. “Where do we get some food from? Look there is a sign that says food over there.” “Okay let’s go. Oh the food is in jars, where do we get some cutlery from?” asked Arthur. “I do not think we get cutlery, but let’s just eat our food okay?” said Holly, “Let’s go find the time machine and get out of here before mum comes back,” said Holly. “Here it is! Let’s go home.” "We are home” said Arthur, “now where is mum? Here she is!” said Arthur “Where have you been?” asked mum. “Can we go home now?” asked Holly. “Yes” said mum.
