Wayne & Janna Smith started a cow/calf operation in 1978. Their remuda began with the purchase of various cutting bred fillies and mares that they either had in cutting training or were riding for clients. They then bred to stallions that were from cutting operations or currently trained and showing in cutting. The Smith’s use geldings for prowling pastures, doctoring sick cattle, branding calves and gathering cattle for shipping or working. All of this is done as a family affair on horseback as their two sons, daughter-in-law’s and granddaughters help with the branding. Foals are ranch-raised and learn from the start how to get around in various terrain. The goal of the operation is to produce good-minded, athletic, gentle horses that are easy on the eyes that they and buyers will enjoy using and competing on for many years.

Spade Ranches were started in 1889 when Colonel Isaac Ellwood bought the 130,000 acre Renderbrook Spade south of Colorado City, Texas. Today, Spade operates on 250,000 acres in six locations in West Texas and the Panhandle. Wesley Welch is CEO and the owners are six of the Ellwood’s descendants. In 1868, Robert Clay Freeny left Boggy Depot, Indian Territory to settle on the “Redlands” on what is today the Atoka/Bryan county line, north & east of Caddo, Oklahoma. This country would become the future headquarters for the Stuart Ranch, which has now grown into a diversified operation, spanning across four counties. The headquarters today is in Jefferson County, near Waurika Oklahoma. Robert Clay registered one of the first brands in the Choctaw Nation; today cattle are branded with a 7S on the left hip & the horses branded with an S on their left shoulder. The ranch operates a commercial cow herd comprised of Hereford & Black Baldys. In 1949, Bob Stuart upgraded the horses with the purchase of BIG SHOT DUN from the Waggoner Ranch. SON O LEO & PORT COMMAND crossed back on the BIG SHOT DUN & BREEZY BUCK mares laid a solid foundation for the broodmare band. Today the ranch maintains around 30 mares of which all have proven themselves on the ranch and/or in the show pen with the majority being producers & performers. The ranch strives to produce versatile horses with eye appeal, good structure, conformation & agility. Stuart Ranch has produced numerous World Champions, superior event horses, NRCHA, NCHA & RHAA money earners, national high point titles & the 1995 Superhorse, GENUINE REDBUD. In 2014, MISS T STUART (1961) was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. In 1995 the ranch won the Best Remuda Award, and now participates in the Ranching Heritage Breeders program, winning the Heritage Challenge twice.

In 1854, Svante Magnus Swenson, a Swedish merchant & banker, bought Texas acreage. He gave his sons, E.P. & S.A. Swenson, the land to develop & as a result, the Swenson Brothers ranch was born. The brothers purchased additional land & by the early 1900’s, ranch operations comprised almost 500,000 acres in four separate units, referred to as: Flat Top, Throckmorton, Tongue River & Spur Ranches. The last two have been sold. The enterprise was incorporated under the name Swenson Land & Cattle Co., Inc. in 1926. Today’s SMS is owned by the Bruce & Parry Swenson families, great-great grandsons of S.M. Swenson. The ranch today consists of Flat Top and Throckmorton Ranches.

Millard Morris purchased the 89,000 acre Tongue River Ranch in 1997 and added the New Mexico Big Baldy Ranch of 30,000 acres in 2007. The ranch tries to maintain the western way of life. Chuckwagons are still used and cowboys throw out their bedrolls twice a year. The cattle are worked just like they were 100 years ago. The ranch manager, TJ Roberts, and his wife Kristin, have been instrumental in preserving the ranching heritage. Continuing tradition and preserving history is a way of life, not a job at Tongue River Ranch.

INCENTIVE FUNDThe Ranch Horse Sale committee approved an incentive fund

beginning with the 2008 Sale. A fee of $20 per horse is required for each horse consigned to the sale.

Half of the incentive fund will be awarded to the highest placing finalist of the RHAA National Finals whose winning horse was

originally purchased from the WHC Ranch Horse Sale. The other half of the incentive fund will be given to the respective consignor of the winning horse. In the event that there is not a qualified winner, the

fund monies will carry over to the next year’s Finals.

The American Quarter Horse Association is committed to the promotion of the ranch horse. The association has created programs to help ranchers market their ranch-bred American Quarter Horses and opportunities for their ranch-bred horses to be showcased in

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. The highest bidder is to be the buyer. If any dispute arises between or among any two or more bidders, sole authority to settle the dispute as he/she sees it is reserved by the auctioneer and his decision shall be final. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any and all bids. The auctioneer will decline any bid made by parties who have defaulted in former purchases.

2. The sale management is not responsible for the integrity of any specific bid and the seller understands and assumes all responsibilities for any bid that is made and not thereafter honored. In the event any bid is not honored, the seller agrees not to hold the sales management responsible and agrees not to sue the sales management hereof.

3. Terms of the sale are CASH and payment in full of purchase price, plus transfer fee and must be made to the cashier during or immediately after the sale. Payment shall be in form of cash, cashier’s check, personal check or traveler’s check. Driver’s license or some other form of positive identification is required for personal checks.

4. Horses are the buyers’ expense and risk the responsibility from the time of purchase, but no delivery will be made until final settlement has been made.

6. All horses are sold “as is.” There is no guarantee of any kind as to the soundness, condition or other quality of any horse sold in this sale. Right of recourse must be directly to the owner – NOT through Western Heritage Classic.

7. All registration papers will be withheld by the sale management until all checks clear the bank. At such time, they, along with transfer certificates, will be delivered to the American Quarter Horse Association for processing of transfer.

8. Western Heritage Classic Ranch Horse Sale auctioneers and personnel, do not act as agents for or represent the buyer or seller, but merely provide a medium for bringing together the buyer and seller for the purpose of sales transaction. The Sales Management assumes no liability for either buyer or seller.

9. Any person signing a check in the State of Texas is liable for the amount of the check. Any person giving an “insufficient funds” check or running an order to “stop payment” of check will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
