41. Rodney was killed by a liger. (A cross between a tiger and a lion) Rodney washelping Eddie Richardson, owner and operator of the Big R Safari Farm, when he waskilled. Rodney and Eddie were going to do some work on the animal's cage, and Rodneyopened the door of the cage to let the liger out, and move into another cage while thework was accomplished. The animal's cage door was between Rodney and the liger, whichwould have been safe, under usual conditions. Something happened, and the liger startedback into the cage. According to Don Whitlock, who received this information trom EddieRichardson, Rodney shut the cage door to soon, before the liger was completely in thecage. The liger got out into the walkspace where Rodney was. Rodney was making asuccessful effort at beating the liger off with an iron pipe and making his way to the safetydoor. A caged aped reached through the wire mesh and grabbed Rodney, distracting him,and causing him to spin around, turning his back to the liger. At that point the ligerpounced, seizing Rodney by the nape of the neck. One of the liger's fangs penetratedRodney's jugular vein, and another severed his spinal cord. Eddie Richardson made everyeffort to save Rodney, attempting to beat the liger offwith an iron pipe. He beat the ligerso hard and so many times that the pipe bent. The liger would not let Rodney go, so Eddieran to the house and got a gun and shot the liger three times in the head before it died.According to the coroner, Rodney died instantly. And he was not mauled, because theliger had been declawed. The liger was a huge animal, weighing between 400 and 600pounds.
