We’re on the web!
Lent, 2017 As a North Dakota native, I continue to be one who is thankful to live in a place where all the seasons of the year can be experienced. Having said that, this year I am feeling that winter has been celebrated long enough...I am anxious to put away the stuff of winter and hear the sounds of water gushing into the storm drains again. I look forward to the green of new grass and the smell of soft earth.
As I speak of the seasons of nature, I lift up for you the church season of Lent which will arrive on Wednesday, March 1st with the observance of Ash Wednesday. We will be entering a season of 40 days, not including Sundays, leading up to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday, April 16th. This year we are trying something new! As most of you know the attendance at the Lenten suppers had been dropping every year for the past four or five years, to the point where we did not have the Lenten suppers at all last year. This year we thought we would try a ‘soup and breads’ and add a noon service for the mid-week services. In this new format, the evening service will remain at 6:00PM as it is the rest of the year, with pizza still available for Wednesday School children and their families. This format will also allow us to have regular confirmation classes continue to meet at their usual 7:00PM time.
This year Pastor Christina and myself will again be participating in a ‘round-robin’ pulpit exchange with other ELCA pastors in the Bismarck-Mandan
area. Our theme this Lent will be “Ordinary, Yet Sacred”. Each preacher has
selected an ordinary object which has spiritual significance for them and will use that object to relate how God can bring a sacred truth into reality through it. Through their stories we will hear how God makes sacred spaces in the midst of our daily routine.
The schedule and pastor are as follows:
Wednesday, March 8th, 12:00PM and 6:00PM Pastor Christina here.
Wednesday, March 15th, 12:00PM and 6:00PM Pastor Paul Schick from Trinity Lutheran in Bismarck is here.
Wednesday, March 22nd, 12:00PM and 6:00PM Pastor Joel Sherer from Living Water Lutheran in Mandan is here.
Wednesday, March 29th, 12:00PM and 6:00PM Pastor Lee here.
Wednesday, April 5th, 12:00PM and 6:00PM Pastor Steve Sathre from Trinity Lutheran in Bismarck is here.
Pastor Christina and myself will be the guest pastors at the same churches listed above as well as Faith Lutheran in Bismarck and Heart River Lutheran in Mandan for their mid-week Lenten services.
I encourage all of you to make this coming Lent a season of reflection, renewal and growth in your faith walk as we journey towards Easter in thankfulness of God’s blessings to us, no matter what the season. Pastor Lee

A few words from the Mission Endowment Committee…. The Mission Endowment Committee invites
members to participate in a campaign to contribute $1,000 in the race to “100 Bridge Builders” by the end of
April 2017! Please prayerfully consider helping to grow the First Lutheran Church Mission
Endowment Fund! The #1 reason people make a charitable gift to their church is to give back to God for the
blessings they have received.
There were 20 ½ contributions at the time this article was submitted for print!
If you are unable to make your contribution by the end of April, we invite members to contribute whenever it
will meet their financial needs. (See the chart below for examples of how you can make your contribution to
reach your goal of $1,000!) When you have reached $1,000, a plaque in recognition of your generous support
will be placed on the “Bridge Builder” wall in the Narthex. Contact one of the Mission Endowment
Committee Members: Michelle Radke (400-9687), Donna Fishbeck (471-2051), Heather Heinle (226-4956),
Terry Bohn (471-7725) or Kristi Entzi (400-6900) or call the church office for more information on how you
can contribute. (663-3594)
Again, a huge thank you to all who have already contributed!

Financial Report/Review
Last deposit for November was not made because of storm, otherwise November income would
have been over expenses.
Budget Overview:
- December’s income was $77,447.00.
- Financials will end in the positive for 2016.
- Snow removal totaled $1,400. Don Entzel donates time but charges to move the snow
from the property. As a result, $2,200 will be posted as expenses in January.
- Admin. expenses has a large expense of $1,382 because paper was on sale; confirmation
and church school supplies were purchased for the next year to take advantage of a 50%
off sale through 1517 Media (formerly Augsburg Fortress).
- Building fund will also end in positive cash flow.
