In this petition “but deliver us from evil ” once again we are reminded that we are in a spiritual battle and we need help. Evil is real. The evil one is real. Jesus was well aware of the reality of both when he gave us this petition. He knew we would need help in dealing with evil. How are we delivered from evil or the evil one? We have lived long enough to know that Jesus doesn’t pluck us out of terrible places and put us in a daisy patch every time evil shows up. We also know that for those who are in Christ Jesus, he will deliver us from the ultimate destruction of evil, which is death. Yet in this prayer Jesus is asking us to pray for help here and now for help in the midst of evil. Though Jesus does not remove us from the world we live in, he is our promise and our hope that while in this world, he will carry us through all evil. In John, (17: 15-17) Jesus says: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” How is Jesus asking us to be delivered? Not by being taken out of the world but by making us holy, set apart, sanctified in the truth. Jesus says “your word is truth.” We know that Jesus is the Word, the Word made flesh. He is truth incarnate, living truth. We know that the evil one is a deceiver and is incredibly good at deceiving. evil. When we know the truth, when we know God’s promises, the many things about Jesus that are true
and life giving, all those things that remind us about life and his ways and his being – having his truth
within us hidden and at the ready is a way we are helped in the midst of evil.
1 John 4:4 “You, dear children, are from God ….. the one who is in you is greater than the one who is
in the world.” Keeping his word in our inner beings and abiding in Jesus we are helped in the midst of
evil. God delivers you and me from evil by saturating us with the word.

your delicious mid-morning snacks for the
volunteers helping paint and cleanup houses during
the Work Camp. Your efforts are appreciated!
THANK YOU for those who helped with the picnic in
the park. It was a day to remember and we raised $
for the Batiste family and their mission work at NIU
through Athletes in Action.
THANK YOU for all who faithfully delivered lunch
during the week this summer to Scotty, our mail
carrier. He greatly appreciated the meals.
September 1 he retired as a postman. We will miss
his ready smile and quick delivery of our mail.
THANK YOU to all who participated in the church
clean up day on August 31st! The grounds look great
thanks to all of your hard work!

Notes from the Session
The August meeting of the session of the First Presbyterian Church took place on the 20th with an
opening prayer by Pastor Angie. The minutes of the previous meeting and the Treasurer's report were
accepted as written. Several members talked about how God had been working in their lives this past month.
Discussion continued on the repair of the manse porch and several other projects around the church. A
list of projects will be brought to the next session meeting to make decisions on the priority of each project.
A advent devotional will be put together for the advent season. The session members and members of
the congregation will be asked to write a short devotional. These devotionals will be printed in a booklet for
members to read during the advent season.
The committee is working on the Block Party to be held on September 14th beginning at 3:30 pm. The
group will be looking for a tent.
The church will make a $100 donation to the Community Worship Service to be held in
conjunction with the fair. The service will be held on Sunday the 24th at Princeton High School at 4:00 pm.
David Barnes will be the Emergency Pastoral contact for the times when Pastor Angie will be on
vacation or study leave in August, September and October.
Pastor Angie asked the session to consider a donation from the church to the Princeton Ministerial
Association. Their money helps individuals who have come on hard times and need funds to help them get
back on their feet.
The church clean-up day will be held on August 31st.
Sunday School begins on September 15th with a sandwich and dessert lunch to be served after church.
The group studying “The Story” will begin again on that Sunday also.
Pastor Angie mentioned that a mission trip to Chicago to participate in processing the Operation
Christmas Child shoe boxes is being planned for December 6th and 7th. Other churches participate in this
project and a bus will be hired to take those who want to help.
Carolyn Workman closed the meeting with prayer.

MISSION MATTERS
Many Hands Made Our Work Light—TEAMWORK helped us reach our goal!
Lunch in the Park was held on Friday, August 23, hosted by our church. Much like an athlete relies on TEAMWORK to accomplish his or her goals, we were also depending on our team of many dedicated members and friends to volunteer their time and talents to our church and our community. 1 Corinthians 12:14 states, “For the body is not one member, but many.” In an effort to raise money for the Cru Ministry for Athletes in Action on the campus of Northern Illinois University, many helpers were on hand to help make our load light, serving the community while also contributing to an awesome campus ministry. There’s an expression that is quite old and you all must surely know it: “Many Hands Make Light Work.” Truly, the many hands that showed up that day and gave their time and support were the reason this mission project was a success! Many thanks and tons of praise goes to the committee and the workers: Pam Cochran; Becky May; Barb and Len Brumbaugh; Kristie and Bill Cass; Angie and George McClane; Dave Larson; Chuck and Margaret Stiles; Kathy Krase; Mark Schultz; Karl, Beth, Justine, and Seth Schultz; Tyler Mercer; Carmi and Cainee Bohnsack. Three cheers are in order for the volunteers/cooks who supplied the delicious BBQ: Susan Barlow, Nancy Sims, Barb Wiggins, Barb and Len Brumbaugh, Becky May, Kristie Cass, Carolyn Workman. A few more loyal members gave us their support: Margaret and Al Longman, Ron and Marlene Gibson, and Bob and Dorothy Oaks. If I have missed anybody, I apologize. A special thank you goes to Beth Schultz for co-chairing this project and guiding us through the planning stages, even as she fulfilled her duties at the Bureau County Fair. An extra-special thank you goes to our church office administrator, Emalie Ohlson. Emalie was ready, willing and able to help design and print our flyers, signs, and worksheets. She deserves a medal for her dedication and patience in helping us succeed.
