Prelude Gather the Spirit Scott

Chiming of the Hour

Welcome Introit

Come, worship God, who is worthy of honor; enter God’s presence with thanks and a song! You are the rock of your people’s salvation to whom our jubilant praises belong. (hymn 386)

*Call to Worship (from Psalm 47)

Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Shout for joy and sing songs of praise, For God reigns over all the earth! God has gone up with a shout! Sound the trumpets and sing songs of praise!

*Hymn 267 Come, Christians, Join to Sing

*Invitation to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

Living God, we confess that our faith is often weak, and our prayers are often timid. Our love for others can be faint, and our gratitude is frequently unconvincing. We stand looking toward heaven, yet we feel far from you because of our own misgivings and missteps. Have mercy on us, O God. Draw near in mercy to us and fill us with your power, that we might stand firm and act boldly as your people; in the name of the risen Christ we pray.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (traditional version)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES

Today is the final Sunday in the Easter season.

This is the last Sunday to use our call to worship,

“Christ is risen!”, which has reminded us that

Easter extends beyond one day.

The final Sunday in the Easter season is also the

day when we celebrate the ascension of Jesus, the

departure of Christ from earth into the presence

of God. The well-known narrative in Acts 1 takes

place 40 days after the Resurrection. Jesus, in the

company of the disciples, is taken up in their sight

after warning them to remain in Jerusalem until

the coming of the Holy Spirit. As he ascends a

cloud hides him from their view, and two men in

white appear to tell them that he will return “in

the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Our service this morning includes the recognition

of several members who are embarking on new

ventures. Kate Fulcher is soon to be a graduate

of Oak Ridge High School. She will attend the

University of Tennessee in the fall.

Also, Mary Cathcart is relocating to Richmond,

Va., to be near her daughter’s family. Elizabeth

and Trygve Myhre are moving to Shannondale in

Maryville (though we hope to see them as often

as possible on Sunday mornings). And Mike and

Cheryl Bast are moving to Maryland for new jobs.

They will also be closer to daughter Ellen.

Blessings and Godspeed to all of these wonderful

folks!
