First Presbyterian Church of Caledonia June 2018 Long stormy spring-time, wet contentious April, winter chilling the lap of very May; but at length the season of summer does come. Thomas Carlyle And just like that the snow that we had a few weeks ago is gone and we are in summer. Welcome to a warm season when we look forward to spending time with family. We hope that includes your church family. During this time of healing and transition, we must support each other as any family does in this situation. We have chosen the theme of Hope for Summer 2018, with focus on the parable of the mustard seed, Mathew 13:31-32, and celebrating that God’s work often happens in insignificant ways. Summer News….Summer may still be a few weeks away but the Summer Season has begun at First Church. The team has chosen ‘Hope’ for our theme, and our theme is represented by Matthew 13:31-32; the parable of the mustard seed. In your bulletin will be a blank piece of paper. We will be asking you to share what Hope Is with us. Please deposit this in the collection plate, and look for it to be shared on the bulletin board ‘Hope Is’. Our mission for the summer will be Camp Whitman, more about this later. We are also asking for contributions from the congregation for coffee hours, read on. The prayground will be going away for the summer, but do not fear, listening bags are new and updated and nursery care will be provided for the little ones. On June 3 rd , our children will be leading the worship. The children have been working on the presentation, which is the story of David and Goliath, so be sure and come to support our youngest disciples. Coffee hour will be the provided by the congregation from A-K.On June 10 th , Rev. Viktoria Berlik will be preaching and our Minute for Mission will be presented by Leah Kone from Camp Whitman. At this service a special offering for Camp Whitman will be collected, envelopes will be in the pews. This Camp has made a difference in so many young people’s lives, we hope you will be generous. Coffee hour will be provided by the congregation from L-N, and we are asking for everyone to bring one flower to share with all of us.On June 17 th we will welcome Rev. Martha Langford to our pulpit. Rev. Langford will remain with us during the summer. Please join us as we welcome her to our church and also as we recognize our graduating seniors. We have quite a list of young people heading into the next chapter of their lives. The Summer Team will furnish coffee hour for all.June 24 th is an important date in our church’s story as we will hold a Congregational Meeting immediately following the service for the purpose of electing officers. We will be recognizing those officers who are retiring and we will also be celebrating communion. Coffee hour will be furnished by congregation from O-Z.

The schedule for our joint Summer Worship is included elsewhere in the newsletter. Don’t forget that worship time is 9:30 a.m. during the summer months. We are pleased that Rev. We hope that you will stop in and say hello. Also feel free to perhaps talk to her about those things that are heavy on your heart. She comes to us with much experience in congregational ministry, and she will help us as we continue to heal. That’s all for now…. Summer Team

Per Capita ~ A Tie That Binds

News Flash: I like being Presbyterian. Seems logical given that I have only ever been Presbyterian. But at two different times in my life I made a conscience decision to continue to be Presbyterian.

I like the way the Presbyterian denomination organizes itself and governs itself; I like that we are of the reformed tradition; and I like that education has always been important to Presbyterians. Per Capita is a commitment that comes along with being Presbyterian.

I know that our Presbyterian Per Capita can feel like a tax that a ‘governing body’ pushed downward onto us; but perhaps a better way to view Per Capita is as a commitment that comes with being a connectional Christian denomination. The very way we organize and govern ourselves creates community and connections. There is value to being connectional – we are not alone. Per Capita is a tie that binds us together, a tie that creates ways for us to share good things with each other, a tie that allows us to help each other, a tie that allows us to do more for our communities, our country, and our world than any one congregation could ever do. Think of Per Capita as similar to bringing a dish to a pot luck supper – something Presbyterians are VERY good at!

In the last number of years a few of our teens have attended the Presbyterian Church USA’s Youth Triennium - a five day event for high school age youth. Triennium is focused on equipping young people to be transformational Christian leaders and helps call young people into deeper discipleship with Jesus Christ. Triennium is a high energy, Biblically infused, youth focused conference. This rich experience allowing teens to explore and grow their faith. Youth Triennium is a tie that binds us together, and Youth Triennium alone makes Per Capita worth it to me.

I was on Session and Chair of the Personnel Committee from before Rev Nancy Reinert retired through August of 2017. Throughout that time our Presbytery was invaluable to me. I am not sure what I would have done without our

Presbytery. I routinely use the Presbyterian Church USA’s website to research information about the Board of Pensions for our pastors, about Minute for Mission topics, or to help plan a Sunday school lesson. These resources are a tie that binds us together, giving us resources we would not have on our own. These resources make Per Capita worth it to me.

Per Capita covers much of the administrative costs of the Special Offerings we support – OGHS, Pentecost, Peace and Global Witness, and Christmas Joy. This means our contributions to these ministries directly address the need. This church is committed to paying our full Per Capita assessment, regardless of whether each of us pays our individual share. When we each pay our individual share of Per Capita it means that our church budget doesn’t need to absorb our entire Per Capita Assessment. That means more of our income from pledges and other receipts stays here, with us, to support our building, our Pastor, our staff, and our ministries. Ministries are ties that bind us together. Ministries make Per Capita worth it to me.

The 2018 individual Per Capita is $31.26. Round it down to $31, round it up to $32, or pay any amount toward your Per Capita that seems reasonable to you – whatever makes sense for your personal budget. Any amount will make a difference to our bottom line. If you have offering envelopes, use the blue envelop that came in the box. For those of you who don’t get envelopes: pick up a blue Per Capita envelop in the Narthex or from the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

Janet Flynn, for the Summer Seasonal Team.

“Blest be the tie that bindsOur hearts in Christian love;

The fellowship of kindred mindsIs like to that above."

Joint Summer Worship Season 2018: Sunday July 1 – Sunday September 2

“May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13; New Living Translation

As summer approaches we look forward to a slower, more relaxed pace, enjoying time with friends and family. For the three Presbyterian Churches of Caledonia and Mumford summer means welcoming back our tradition of worshipping together. It is a tradition that provides opportunities to share with each other and support each other as a wider community of faith. A summer season of ‘hope’ resonated strongly for all three of our congregations and we chose Romans 15:13 as our connecting Bible Verse. Again this summer there will be Summer Food Drive goals for the Backpack Project. Not only do we have the weeks worshiping with Stone and Mumford Churches, we will be able to worship with our entire community on July 29. And don’t forget the Ducky Derby on Saturday August 4. The Derby is good fun, with proceeds split between Focus on the Children and Backpack Project.

Childcare during worship for the Summer(June 10, 17, & 24; August 19 & 26; September 2)

The Summer Seasonal Team, with approval from Session, is scheduling childcare during worship for children and toddlers, ages 5 years and younger. Care will be offered in the Learning Tree rooms and we will be looking for volunteers. We will also be filling the Listening Bags with activity sheets related to the Seasonal Theme or the Lectionary Scriptures for the day. Children over 5 are asked to sit with their family or with a designated worship partner.

Memory Verse: But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 New Living Translation

We finished our Sunday school year on June 3 with worship led by our children. Worship on Sunday included a puppet show, an anthem sung by our children, and Bible stories and lessons presented by our children. We presented the story of David and Goliath to the congregation in much the same way we experienced it during our Sunday school lesson.

The Eastertide Pentecost Seasonal Team asked for our help with Seasonal Team sign-up. It was fun for us to dress-up and participate in worship. If you haven’t chosen a Seasonal Team there is still time! Make new friends.

Throughout this entire school year we’ve been practicing our Bible skills. We are getting quite good at finding the Books of the Old and New Testaments and specific passages.

Learning the Lord’s Prayer has been a focus. We will continue this next year, begin learning Psalm 23, and perhaps begin practicing the Apostles Creed.

Sunday School is on summer break starting June 10. We will be back again in the fall. Learning Bags will be available all summer.

Are you keeping your gifting current? We are currently experiencing a shortfall of nearly

$8,000…Do you want to “forget” about gifting to the Church? The summer months are just around the corner… This tends to be the time when we as a congregation fall behind on our gifting, but the bills still need to be paid… We have an easy solution for you… The Church offers to you a monthly or weekly Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) as a way for you to give your gifts to the Church. This is an optional service for those of you who would find it helpful. Essentially, you set it and forget it and members who use it, Love it!The EFT is a monthly or weekly transfer that is set up using the Electronic Funds Transfer Authorization Form. There is no fee for utilizing this service. At any time, you can send a request in writing to end the EFT or to change the amount. If you would like to set this up, please let Brenda Beardsley, Treasurer; know and she will make the form available to you. You can email her at [email protected] or see her in person.

A HUGE thank-you to all those folks who helped make the Dady Brothers’ concert on May 4th such a success: Steve and Janet Russ-Clar, who cleared the chancel, set up, took down, brought in flowers, etc.; Janet Flynn and Val Connor and helpers who organized the reception (and all you bakers!); Mary Drotar and Linda Hill who greeted folks at the doors; those who cleaned before and after; those who placed flyers around town, added information to the church newsletter, church website, Penny Saver, etc. You all helped to make this a wonderful event that was enjoyed by a very enthusiastic audience. John and Joe Dady love coming to First Presbyterian, and we certainly enjoyed having them! It was a great evening of music and laughter.

Thank you for being so thoughtful! Your donation of the $50 Gift Card was greatly appreciated by all at Patrick Place for our fundraising event. Patrick Place will be there to care for the terminally ill of our whole community.
