Blessed with God’s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity.

By Jesus Christ’s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy.

As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.

*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.

Prelude When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Mason/arr. Hayes Chiming of the Hour Welcome

Introit

Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt Keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive: We, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! (hymn 409)

*Call to Worship (from Psalm 130)

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in God’s word I hope. My soul waits for God more than those who watch for the morning. O people, hope in the Lord, For with God there is steadfast love and life everlasting.

*Hymn 14 For the Beauty of the Earth

*Invitation to Confession Hymn 426 Search Me, O God (first time choir, second time all)

*Prayer of Confession (from John 4)

God of great mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We speak as though hope is lost, even while you are still speaking. We act as though death is the end, even while you are still acting. Forgive us, Lord. Breathe anew within us, that we might live as your faithful people in this world; through Christ our Lord we pray.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

WORSHIP NOTES

On this Fifth Sunday in Lent we explore two

familiar stories: Ezekiel and the valley of dry

bones, and Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.

Our symbol for Lent is the labyrinth, an ancient

tool for meditation and prayer. A labyrinth is on

the bulletin cover each Sunday in Lent so that

you can take it home to use it (instructions are

located in the narthex next to another labyrinth

for your use). You are also invited to walk the

new labyrinth we have constructed in the area

just west of the FPC memorial garden.

Hymn 832 serves as our lectionary reading of

Psalm 130 today. This hymn represents a Kenyan

adaptation of the gospel hymn 'My Hope Is Built

on Nothing Less.' The missionary programs of

North American churches have now reached the

stage that resources from Christian communities

in former mission fields now flow outward, to

places like Kenya. You are invited to sing the

refrain in its original Swahili!

SERVICE OF

PSALMS This evening at 5:00

p.m., at First United

Methodist Church of

Oak Ridge.

The service will consist of reflections by local

pastors and choral and instrumental performances

of psalms selected for Lent, set to music by

Knoxville composer John Purifoy. An offering for

ADFAC will be received during the service.
