The Apostle Writes:
‘Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps
and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took
flasks of oil with their lamps.
As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at
midnight there was a shout, "Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet
him." Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish
said to the wise, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out." But the
wise replied, "No! There will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go
to the dealers and buy some for yourselves." And while they went to buy it, the
bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding
banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying,
"Lord, lord, open to us." But he replied, "Truly I tell you, I do not know you."
Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

A bishop once said, “We arenot called to be perfect; we arecalled to be holy.” And the waywe become closer to holiness isby the virtue of “humility”. Doany of us like to be humiliated ei-ther in private or in public? Iknow it is not on the top of thelist for me. To be humiliatedmeans that we are beneath otherpeople; that we have failed insome way or another and that ourpride is now at stake. But humil-ity is one of the greatest virtueswe can obtain. It is the greatestvirtue Jesus Christ exemplifiedthroughout His life and one thathe instructed his disciples to em-brace. Humility makes us exam-ine ourselves in a way that we seeourselves and all of our defects,our faults, and our shortcomings.Humility requires us to see our-selves as we truly are and to sub-mit ourselves completely andwillingly to God. St. ThomasAquinas defines humility in theSumma. “The virtue of humil-ity,” he says, “Consists in keep-ing oneself within one’s ownbounds, not reaching out to things
above one, but submitting toone’s superior.” This is humilityat its core. When we empty our-selves to God we begin to under-stand more and more the need offorgiveness; to understand ourfaults; and to begin to of knowingourselves well and to see our de-fects. As St. Bernard has said,“He lacks everything who thinkshe lacks nothing.” All of us needto strive for this virtue of humil-ity and by doing so we not onlysee our own weaknesses and de-fects but we will be able to under-stand other people’s defects andweaknesses as well. And whenthis happens we become morecompassionate and forgiving toothers. Humility is key towardour journey to holiness.
St. Theresa of AvilaTheresa lived in an age of ex-
ploration as well as political, so-cial and religious upheaval. Itwas the 16th century, a time ofturmoil and reform. She wasborn before the Protestant Ref-ormation and died almost 20years after the closing of the

Teresa was a woman “for God,” a woman ofprayer, discipline and compassion. Her heart be-longed to God. Her ongoing conversion was an ar-duous lifelong struggle, involving ongoingpurification and suffering. She was misunderstood,misjudged, opposed in her efforts at reform. Yetshe struggled on, courageous and faithful; shestruggled with her own mediocrity, her illness, heropposition. And in the midst of all this she clungto God in life and in prayer. Her writings onprayer and contemplation are drawn from her expe-rience: powerful, practical and graceful. A womanof prayer; a woman for God.
