PRAYER & WORSHIP PASTOR’S PAGE

Advent and Lent are the two peniten al seasons of the church year. However, Advent is a season in an cipa on of the birth of Christ in me. Now, what is meant by "the birth of Christ in me"? Our four Sundays of Advent are not just Sundays in prepara on for the birth of a child des ned to become the Savior of the na ons, but the birth of a child every day in the hearts of every Chris an and the future return of the second coming in me where everything will be taken back by our God. In today's Gospel, for some this reading might strike fear into their hearts: "...perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright." Even today, we hear about doomsday sayers professing the end of the world on a par cular date. To be sure, the end of the world will come! However, we truly do not know the me. Only God knows when God will call everything to return to him. In the final lines of today's Gospel we are told to "be vigilant at all mes and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribula ons that are imminent." This first Sunday in the season of Advent is a me for us to joyfully await the coming of Christ for the first me, at birth; for the second me, into our everyday lives; and looking forward to the last me when he will come to take all of crea on back to his Father.

REFLECTION — BLESSED FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT TO EACH OF YOU!

STEWARDSHIP

GOSPEL MEDITATION FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT You are at the eye doctor and it’s me for the peripheral vision test. You know the one. It’s where you put your head up to a contrap on and have to click a switch every

me you see a squiggly line. If you don’t concentrate and maintain op mal focus, you will miss them and skew the outcome of the test. You can easily find yourself with a diagnosis that really isn’t accurate! Concentra on and focus are key to succeeding with this evalua on. They are also key to developing a healthy, vibrant spiritual life. If we do not bring our full consciousness to the task, concentrate with all our might, be watchful and vigilant, we are not going to see God’s loving presence flashing before our eyes! That’s why we need Advent. Let’s face it. We can easily get distracted, focus on nonessen al and superficial things and lose touch with what really ma ers. Our a en ons wander. We daydream and even become a bit overwhelmed and red. All of the stresses and demands of life consume us and we find ourselves constantly trying to play catch up rather than relishing the moment of the now. “Now” moments are so flee ng. They flash before us like those squiggly lines on a screen. Present moments go as quickly as they come but it is important to discover them and rest in them as o en as we can. Though gone in a flash, these now moments of encounter with God teach powerful lessons and offer a grounding in truth that can be found nowhere else. It’s the grace of Advent to become watchful and a en ve because we are never sure when God will surprise us. God loves surprises and love thrives on them! God’s now moments of surprises come as tender instants of in mate connec on where I find profound peace, experience joy, and rest in love. These are Advent mes reflec ve of the now moments when Christ first was born, when God surprises us during every me we care to watch and when the great surprise of Christ’s second coming dawns upon us all. But, to discover the grandeur and experience the awe of these now mes, we have to be ready. We have to want to be there. We have to believe. And, we have to have the desire to soak in as much as we can in the me we have before us.

Dear OLMC Parishioners, Thank you for your support of Our Lady

of Mt. Carmel Church this year as we have navigated how to best continue our ministry during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The arrival of autumn typically signifies a change in

seasons, children going back to school, and the arrival of our many fall programs that enrich our church family. This fall is different. Many children are attending school fully or partially remote and most in-person gatherings have strict guidelines. As we learn how to adapt to our current reality, OLMC would like your help to allow us to continue our ministry. Please consider joining many of your fellow parishioners at OLMC by making your generous gifts through ParishSOFT Giving at www.olmcfairfileld.org. Your support makes it possible for us to continue to minister during the COVID-19 outbreak. ParishSOFT is a convenient and secure electronic giving (eGiving) program, and it provides OLMC with reliable donations during these unstable times. I hope that if you are able, you’ll take a minute to enroll: • Visit our website www.olmcfairfield.org • Click-on the link. “GIVE Online” • How to create an account - click on “sign-in” - click on “Register for an Account.”) • Navigate to choose the Fund and Give! You can give a one-time contribution or you can specify a reoccurring giving to any of the funds available throughout the year!

Please MAIL—in Offertory Envelopes or u lize OLMC’s Online-Giving!

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

Saving Human Lives This Ar cle is in regard to a 1998 comic strip, B.C. Two li le ants si ng on a rock by the ocean see the Statue of Liberty in the distance. One says, “That statue in the har-bor-didn’t it used to have a light?” The oth-er one says, “Yes.” The first one replies, “When did it go out?” Then the second one says, “1973.” The trial of Roe vs. Wade that made abor on legal was 1973. Not only did America’s light go out but our heart and our conscience died that day also. We should hang our heads in shame for having allowed this atrocity to happen. For a country to make legal the killing of our very own chil-dren - flesh and blood – is a country without morals, without pride, without conscience – a country headed for its own destruc on. We’re not talking about saving whales, or eagles, or the spo ed owls here. We’re try-ing to save human lives. We as a na on have condi oned our minds with so-called “reasons” and “excuses” and “choices.” They are just smoke screens to hide our sins

behind. Let’s call abor-on what it really is --

murder -- a sin against God’s Fi h Command-ment. Our day of reck-oning is coming.

Prayer During A Health Crisis

Compassionate and Loving Father, In the face of confusion and concern impart to us the calm of your presence. In You allow us to find hope and healing. Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands. Be with those who lead and give then Your Spirit of wisdom. Be with those who have fallen ill and give them Your comfort-ing heart. Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love. Allow us at this time of trial to then serve as instruments of that love to all we meet. We ask this in Your Name. Amen.
