Phyllomedusa vaillantii Boulenger, 1882 is widely spread throughout much of the Brazilian Amazon and neighboring countries. This paper presents the first record of the species in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, extending its known geographical distribution by ca. 470 km northeast of the Carajás National Forest in Pará, and the first record for the northeastern region of Brazil. The genus Phyllomedusa Wagler (1830) is currently composed of 23 species in Brazil (Caramaschi and Cruz 2002; Segalla et al., 2012). Phyllomedusa vaillantii Boulenger (1882) is known from the Amazon region in northern Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela and Brazil (Duellman, 1978; Caramaschi and Cruz 2002; Bartlett and Bartlett 2003; Duellman, 2005; Amphibia Web 2013; Segalla et al., 2012; Frost, 2013). In Brazil, it has been registered in the states of Amapá (MNRJ 2328), Acre (Bernarde et al., 2011), Rondônia (Vanzolini, 1986; Bernarde et al., 1999), Mato Grosso (São-Pedro et al., 2009; Ávila and Kawashita-Ribeiro, 2011), Amazonas (Caramaschi and Jim, 1983; Lima et al., 2006; Venancio and França, 2010) and Pará (Pinheiro et al., 2012). The type locality of the species is the municipality of Santarém, Pará (Duellman, 2005). On January 20 2013 at 21:00 h, an adult female Phyllomedusa vaillantii was found moving on the ground, devoid of litter, in a riparian forest with many Açai palms (Euterpe sp.) within the biological reserve of Gurupi (04°00’20” S, 46°46’41” W) (Figure 1). The specimen was collected by hand, euthanized by ventral application of lidocaine (ointment), fixed in 10% formalin, preserved in 70% ethanol and deposited in the Herpetological Collection of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (CHP-UFRPE 2621). records of Phyllomedusa vaillantii are absent from many inventories in this vast region. This record is the first for the state of Maranhão, and the first for the northeastern region of Brazil, extending the known distribution of the species by more than 470 kilometers northeast from the nearest municipality, in the Carajás National Forest, Pará (Pinheiro et al., 2012) (Figure 2).

Acknowledgments. We thank Ulisses Caramaschi (National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, MNRJ) for providing literature and a voucher number for the specimen deposited at MNRJ.
