˙music As We Go to serve The King Shall Come (Michael Burkhardt)
Today’s Hymn Note: O Come, O Come, EmmanuelParts of this hymn originate in the 8th century, from the seven antiphons sung in the medieval Roman Church at Vespers before and after the Magnificat (Mary’s Song). In the Vespers form, this hymn was used in call and response fashion. The original text created the reverse acrostic “ero cras,” which means “I shall be with you tomorrow,” an especially appropriate symbolism for Advent. The acrostic is the following:
O Sapienta (Wisdom)O Adonai (Lord)O Radix Jesse (Stem of Jesse)O Clavis David (Key of David)O Oriens (Dayspring)O Rex Gentium (King of the world)O Emmanuel (God with us)
Sometime in the 13th century, several verses were selected for a hymn and the “Rejoice, rejoice” refrain added. The melody VENI IMMANUEL was originally music for a Requiem Mass in a fifteenth-century processional of French Franciscan nuns. Thomas Helmore, a priest in the Church of England, adapted this chant tune and published it in Part II of his The Hymnal Noted (1854).
