Today’s Services

8.00am Holy Communion

9.30am Sung Eucharist

Preacher: The Rev’d Sam Goodes Celebrant: The Rev’d Sam Goodes

A special welcome to all who are worshipping with us for the first time or visiting us today. We especially welcome those visiting us from other

areas. Please join us for a cup of tea or coffee after the 9.30am service.

Before the Service begins please read the following: In the Church’s calendar, we have entered the special season of Lent. Lent is the season of 40 days before Easter beginning on Ash Wednesday (March 6th). It arose out of preparing new Christians for baptism on Easter Day. It is a time of preparation and reflection, and calls every member of the Church to give some time to prayer, study of the Bible and greater generosity to those in need. The aim is to give our relationship with God some greater priority so we create an opportunity for spiritual growth. Our worship therefore, is a little more sombre and reflective, in contrast to the joy and praise of Easter.

Sentence of the Day Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. Luke 4.8

Prayer of the Day O saving God, who led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land: so guide us that, following our Saviour, we may walk through the wilderness of this world and be brought to the glory of the world which is to come; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and for ever. Amen.

Readings

1st Reading: :Deuteronomy 26.1-11 OT p.170 Deuteronomy is constructed as a series of speeches by Moses to the Israelites gathered on the east side of the Jordan ready to cross the river into the Promised Land. Israel returned from exile six centuries before Christ, and here the author is reminding the people of Israel of their noble origins, centuries earlier. The author describes Moses instructing how to tell that story at a regular ritual. The ‘wandering Aramean’ of verse 5 is Moses.

Psalm: Psalm 91.1-2, 9-16 (sung) This Thanksgiving Psalm expresses confidence in God’s presence and protection. It is quoted in the gospel reading set for today.

Richard Woodward 1744-77

1. Those who dwell in the shelter of the | Most | High:

who abide under the | shadow | of the · Al | mighty. 2. They will say to the Lord *

‘You are my refuge | and my | stronghold: my | God in | whom I | trust.’

9. The Lord himself | is your | refuge: you have | made the · most | High your | stronghold. 10. Therefore no harm | will be | fall you: nor will any | scourge come | near your | tent. 11. For he will com | mand his | angels: to | keep you · in | all your | ways. 12. They will bear you | up in · their | hands: lest you dash your | foot a | gainst a | stone.

13. You will tread on the lion | and the | adder: the young lion and the serpent you will | trample | under | foot.

14. ‘You have set your love upon me,’ says the Lord * ‘and therefore I | will de | liver you:

I will lift you out of danger * because | you have | known my | name.

15. ‘When you call upon me I will | answer | you: 16. ‘With long | life I · will | satisfy you: and | fill you · with | my sal | vation.’

2nd Reading: Romans 10.4-13 NT p.147

In Paul’s Letter to the Romans, he argues that a right relationship with God through the Law of Moses is now fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. God’s grace has been mediated through Jesus Christ and this short passage describes how we avail ourselves of that gift.

Gospel: Luke 4.1-15 NT p.56 In today’s reading, Jesus retreats into the wilderness for forty days, reminiscent of the Israelites who were tempted in the wilderness for forty years before entering the Promised Land. Here Jesus is tempted but defends himself with words from scripture, i.e. words of what God has said in the past. As we begin the forty days of Lent, the word of God will be our guide too.

Music Processional: 207 Be still for the presence of the Lord Gradual: 72 Forty days and forty nights Offertory: 149 I heard the voice of Jesus say Communion: 272 Forgive our sins Post Communion: Lord thy Church (words p. 6)

Music Setting: Chris Chataway. Organist: Ian Gray

Lord, thy Church on earth is seeking (A&M 498)

1. Lord, thy Church on earth is seeking thy renewal from above; teach us all the art of speaking with the accent of thy love We will heed thy great commission: ‘Go now into every place – preach, baptize, fulfil my mission, serve with love and share my grace’.

2. Freedom give to those in bondage, lift the burdens caused by sin. Give new hope, new strength and courage, grant release from fears within. Light for darkness; joy for sorrow; love for hatred; peace for strife: These and countless blessings follow as the Spirit gives new life.

3. In the streets of every city where the bruised and lonely dwell, let us show the Saviour’s pity, let us of his mercy tell; to all lands and peoples bringing All the richness of thy word, till the world, thy praises singing, hails thee Christ, Redeemer, Lord. Hugh Sherlock (1905-98)

Shrove Tuesday

On Shrove Tuesday, around 40 people gathered to enjoy a fine spread of pancakes, as we prepared for the beginning of Lent the following day. Thanks to Jill and her team for their hard work and for the wide range of toppings on offer! For those who may not be aware, the name of Shrove Tuesday is derived from the verb “shrive”, or “confess”. In a very practical sense, the origins of the day are seen in the practice of consuming richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. It has connections with the Mardi Gras (literally Fat Tuesday) and Carnivale tradition that developed separately in countries of Latin Europe. Fasting in Lent makes much more sense in the context of the feast of the day before. The other part of the day was the preparation of the ash to be used in the services of Ash Wednesday, both in the church, but also at St. Andrew’s School and Walkerville Nursing Home. The Palm Crosses of the previous year are burned and ground up to create the ash – the cycle of Easter and Lent; joy and sorrow; life and death made clear for us in this action.

May your Lenten journey be blessed…
