LEARNING FROM THE JESUITS AS WE ENTER THE ADVENT SEASON!
Securing justice can sometimes take a long, long time. The Jesuits at Georgetown University remind us that reconciliation, peace and mercy are values that should be pursued at all costs, that the passage of time does not justify injustice or excuse responsibility, that no effort to correct another’s suffering is ever too little or too late. Georgetown University was founded by the Jesuits in 1789, in the capital city of the new United States. In 1838, the university needed to raise cash so it sold off one of its most important assets – its slaves. The Jesuits sold 272 of the slaves that worked on the Jesuit owned plantations in Maryland. The slaves were shipped to estates in Louisiana. Families were not kept together and the treatment of the slaves was not very humane by their new taskmasters. The slaves were human beings who suffered gravely as they saw their families and communities torn apart by the sale. Georgetown has finally owned up to this horrible chapter in the history of the college. The college convened a Seminar on Slavery to make recommendation on how to address the college’s historical connection of the acceptance of slavery. This has led to ground-breaking steps by the university. Georgetown will offer admission preference to those whose ancestors were used or sold as slaves by the university – not only the descendants of the 272 sold in 1838, but any slave who worked at Georgetown and the Jesuit farms, just as the university offers preference to the children and grandchildren of alumni. The two buildings at Georgetown, named for the two Jesuits who brokered the 1838 slave deal, will be renamed. One building will be rechristened Isaac Hall, named after one on the victims of the slave trade at the time. The other building, Anne Marie Becraft Hall, is in honor of an African-American woman who opened a school for black girls in Georgetown in 1827. Georgetown has also established a historical research center to provide genealogical information from the college archives to descendants of Georgetown slaves. A public memorial to the slaves is also being designed, plus a formal apology to the families of the enslaved. While Georgetown has gone further than any institution in facing its dark history, the college realizes it is just a beginning. Jesuit Father David Collins, associate professor of history at Georgetown, notes: “The story of the sale that saved Georgetown draws our attention to 272 spe-cific people, and meticulous Jesuit record-keeping unwittingly spares these victims the final in-dignity of forced anonymity. We know the people’s names; when they were born, married and buried; whom they were sold with and whom they were separated from. We can trace their fami-ly connections, sometimes even to the present. Those 272 biographies sting in a way a statistic of one million can’t …. This story cries out injustice against our American tendency to distance ourselves from the ugly realities in our history.” As we enter the Advent season, the example of the Jesuit at Georgetown reminds us that the principles of the Gospel often put us on a collision course with the values of the world. We too, like the Georgetown Jesuits of today, must realize that, through God’s work of mercy and reconciliation, we can make God’s presence and grace real and alive in our world.

Be Humble and Kind Last week we celebrated Principal Appreciation Day! The students created beautiful cards and sweet gifts for Mrs. Ward. We took her by surprise. This is Mrs. Ward’s 15th year here at St. Isidore and each year we feel very blessed that she is leading our crew. She always asks what can she do better as a Principal. When we run something by her, her standard reply is, “What is best for our students?” She spends endless hours here taking away from her own family and we are truly grateful. We are now starting into the season of Advent. Our Advent theme for the school this year is, “A gift of love from Heaven above.” When you drive by the school, we hope you feel that message. Our Gospel Value this month is Kind-ness, we are asking the students to do Random Acts of Christmas Kindness in December. Here are a few ideas we are giving to our students. Please join us:
Give 3 sincere compliments Pick up litter Donate a book to the library Take coffee to your teacher (or counselor J) Feed the birds Smile at everyone you see today Say a Christmas prayer at Dinner Take supplies to an animal shelter Do a chore for someone you love Leave a happy note for someone to find Do yard work for a neighbor Candy cane bomb a parking lot Take cookies to a fire station Leave a treat to the mail carrier
Next Friday, we will celebrate our First Friday All School Mass in the Church during the remodel. Please come “Fill the Pews” and join us. Celebrating the Eucharist together is one of the favorite things we do as a community. We hope to see you there.

The ritual for the sacrament our second graders recently re-ceived is called the Rite of Penance, but it is fi ng to refer to it by several other names. Each emphasizes an aspect of it.
Penance refers to our repentance, sorrow and resolu on to amend our life with God’s help.
Confession refers to the act by which we tell our sins to the priest.
Reconcilia on refers to the goal of the celebra on by which the sinner is reconciled to God and the Church.
The Catechism also refers to it as the Sacrament of Conversion and the Sacrament of Forgiveness. This sacrament restores us to God’s grace & joins us with him in in mate friendship.

The Donahue family is proud to be chairing the St. Mary’s Senior Center Ministry. It has been a wonderful and fulfilling experience for the whole family. St Mary’s ministry prepares and serves a hot meal of donated food to homeless senior citizens at the Oakland location. Parishioners are encouraged to become involved by donating food, help with the menu, bring needed items to the preschool and/or come to help serve the Sunday dinner. Sign-up sheets are located in the vestibule. Please deliver food (in disposable containers) to the rectory on Sunday, December 11th between 8:15 and 11:30 AM. As always, St. Isidore dinners are very popular due to the high quality of the meals we serve and also because of the congeniality of our servers. For more info, call Pamela Donahue, 788-7457, or email her at [email protected].
