My Dear Parishioners: This week we have begun the yearly journey of Lent. The word Lent means Spring, and like the seasonal Spring, it is a time of anticipation; looking for life after the long winter sleep. Like Spring Lent calls forth life from us . During this time we recall the forty days in which Jesus remained in the desert in faithful prayer and fasting. These days in the wilderness prepared Christ to face, with courage ,the ministry He was to begin. Our Lenten observance begins with the words we heard on Ash Wednesday “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return”. These words are not a put down, or to insult our dignity, but rather they remind us of a very real and often overlooked fact of life; that our body is limited, it is finite, it will one day decay and turn to dust. It is a common fact that we entered this world and that we will surely leave this world one day. Lent reminds us that this old world is not our permanent home. That we are headed to God, and that we must travel this earthly life with our eyes fixed on that life that will have no end. Lent reminds us of the important things of life are not possessions we can collect, but the riches that will follow us into eternity. Lent not only reminds us of Heaven, but is firmly rooted in the practicality of human life. Someone once said that a person could be so heavenly minded, that they are no earthly good. Lent tells us that with our spiritual eyes fixed on Heaven, we must be rooted in the practical here and now, by our charity and concern for the poor and needy. The three facets of Lent are really three sides of one reality, our desire to become one with Christ. Praying: A renewed life of prayer requires time. Set time this Lent to really pray. Don’t listen to the radio on the way to work, but spend those few minutes in prayer, take along a small copy of the New Testament. Take a few extra moments at home to pray. Pray before and after meals. Say the Rosary as a family. Fasting: Fasting puts us in contact with our spir itual hunger for God. Allow God a little space to work in you. Try keeping the Fast of 1 full meal and 2 small collations (just enough) during the days of Lent. Fast not only from food or treats, but also from TV one evening a week, or at least a half an hour. Spend time together as a family, or come here where so many wonderful things are going on. Fast from some little vice like smoking or drinking caffeine or some little vice you want to overcome. If we can get into the habit of saying ‘NO’ to the little things, we will have the moral fiber to say ‘NO’ when real temptations comes knocking at our door. Today we read about the Fall of Adam and Eve, centered around a Temptation, Eve gave in to the lie and deception of the devil, she said yes when she should have said no. Penance strengthens us to say NO to temptation, and to better say YES to Jesus Christ in our daily walk. Charity or Almsgiving: All of our Spir itual exercises must find its expression in practical works of charity. Perhaps you can look at your financial commitment to your parish. Do I give to charity? Charity must be in our words and our actions. Lent is a time for us to grow in a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Use it well and wisely. God bless you. Your friend and Pastor, Fr. Dan Hesko

Friday Stations of the Cross Make the Stations every Friday after the Noon and Evening Mass Stations begin at 12:45 and 7:30. Follow Christ in this venerable Lenten practice, as He made the Journey to Calvary for our Salvation The Stations of the Cross are synonymous with Lent. This devotion is also known as the "Way of the Cross", It commemorates 14 key events on day of Christ's crucifixion. The majority concern His final walk through the streets of Jerusalem, carrying the Cross. The Stations originated in medieval Europe when wars and persecution prevented Christian pilgrims from visiting the Holy Land. European artists created works depicting scenes of Christ's journey to Calvary. The faithful installed these sculptures or paintings at intervals along a procession route, inside the parish church or outdoors. Performing the devotion meant walking the entire route, stopping to pray at each "station." Today, images of the Stations are on display in almost all Catholic churches. They serve mainly as a focus for Lenten worship services. But the Stations can also be performed privately, at any time of the year, even at home.

LENTEN REGULATIONS 2020 Ash Wednesday is February 26. 2020. Below are some of the rules and regulations binding on Roman Catholics on Ash Wednesday and throughout the penitential season of Lent. Roman Catholics must fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, February 26, 2020 and Good Friday, April 10, 2020. Addition-ally, they must abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent. Ash Wednesday is one of two yearly days of obligatory fasting and abstinence for Roman Catholics, along with Good Friday. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the norms of fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Fasting means a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but they are not to equal that of a full meal. The rule of abstinence from meat is binding upon Catholics aged 14 and onwards. “Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.” The other obligatory day of fasting and abstinence is Good Friday, the day on which Catholics remember the death of Jesus on the cross. On the U.S. Bishops website, they explain the Good Friday fast should, when possible, last through the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. While those are the only two days of full fasting and abstinence required, all of Lent should be a time of spiritual formation and preparation for Easter. “For all other weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and a self-imposed observance of fast-ing,” THE EASTER DUTY: To Make your Confession at Least once a year. (If once a year it is to be done between Ash Wed and Pentecost). To Receive Holy Communion at least once in the year. (Easter). The Emphasis here is Receive Holy Coming, NOT JUST GOING TO MASS ONCE A YEAR. That would be a serious mortal sin.

For those not receiving Holy Communion we offer the following prayer. My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.
