German-American Organization Defended by Its Presi¬dent Before Committee.
JUSTIFIES HIS PROPAGANDA
A general defense of the patrioticcharacter of the National German-American Alliance against charges ofdisloyalty was made yesterday beforea Senate judiciary subcommittee by theRev. S. G. von Bosse of Wilmington,Del., president, who asserted the alli¬ance has no connection with the Ger-man government or the German peopleand that its influence has always beendirected toward keeping- alive Germanideals and to fostering loyalty to thiscountry. The committee has under considera¬
tion a resolution by Senator King ofUtah which would revoke the federalcharter of the organization because ofits alleged disloyal utterances and ac¬tivities.'The alliance has never entertained
even the remotest official connectionwith the German government or theGerman people," Mr. von Bosse said."It is a simon-pure American organiza¬tion, existing only for those living inthis country, having American patriot¬ism, American loyalty and Americanlove for liberty written upon its ban¬ners."He was interrupted several times in
submitting his prepared statement bycommittee members for cross-examina¬tion.
Position on Lusitania Sinking."What have you said in condemna¬
tion of the sinking of the Lusitania?"Senator King asked."The Lusitania was sunk before the
United States went to war with Ger¬many." the witness replied.
"Didn't you justify it?".'*1 justified certain legal phases of
it.** he replied. "I took the view be¬fore the United States went to warthat Americans should not go on bel¬ligerent vessels carrying munitions."Letters written by Mr. von Bosse to
a Wilmington newspaper after theEuropean war broke out. justifyingGermany's invasion of Belgium, wereread. The witness admitted havingwritten the letters, saying he did notbelieve at that time that Belgium was-neutral.Senator Wolcott of Delaware wanted
to know about some articles by Mr.?on Bosse, referring to the work of-)Eheac grand, busy old Berthas" inInrakny.^fhese grand, busy old Berthas which
flropped bombs on hospitals and ca-tAtflrals and defenseless communities,"suggested Senator King.Written Before TJ. S. Entered War.Mr. von Boese defended his articles, say¬
ing they were written before the United8tates entered the war. He did not hesi¬tate in admitting that before the UnitedStates went to war he carried on propa¬ganda work, and that the alliance andhimself personally opposed the UnitedStates becoming a belligerent."Our efforts to keep the United States
out of the war," he said, "was a call ofthe blood, because we believed Germanyto be waging a war of defense."
Mr. von Bo6se defended the actions of [C. J. Hexamer of Philadelphia, the first Ipresident of the» alliance."His father served gallantly in our civil
war," he said, "and the son, born inAmerica, is a truer and better Americanthan thousands whose lip patriotismBoisily jars the clouds."The witness declared the alliance has
inclined the hatred of Anti-Saloon Leagueofficials because of its stand against pro¬hibition, and he attributed some of thecharges against it to that source.Mr. von Bosse will resume his testimony
probably tomorrow. Adam Timm of Phil¬adelphia, secretary of the alliance, is totake the stand this afternoon.
ROCKVILLE AND COUNTYSpuria1 rorrpspondcnp** IV Star.ROCKVILLE, Md., March 20..Miss
Bessie May Thomas, twenty-eightyears old, and Fred Burford Beaumont, aged thirty-four, both of Washington, were married in Rockville yesterdayafternoon by Rev. J. W. Duffey, pasterof the Methodist Church.Mrs. May Edith Coleman, thirty-three
years old. of Hunter. Va_, and John C.Phillippe, aged thirty-five, of Washing¬ton, motored out from Washingtonyesterday afternoon and were marriedby Rev. J. W. Duffey.A license has been issued by the clerk
of the circuit court here for the mar¬riage of Howard M. Omdorff, thirty-two years old, and Mrs. Nettie Harper, aged twenty-nine, both of Glen Echo, this county. The military registrants in this
county who were married since May 18.1S17. and who were placed in class 4by the local draft board, probably willall be placed in class 1 by the districtboard at Annapolis, thus making themavailable for immediate military service. In all of these cases, of which there areabout seventy-five, appeals were takenby the government, and in nearly everycase so far passed upon by the dis¬trict board the local board has beenreversed. The district board takes theposition that the pay of the registrant, added to the government allowance forthe wife in case he is called, is suffi¬cient to support the wife.
