German-American Organiza tion Defended by Its Presi¬ dent Before Committee. JUSTIFIES HIS PROPAGANDA A general defense of the patriotic character of the National German- American Alliance against charges of disloyalty was made yesterday before a Senate judiciary subcommittee by the Rev. S. G. von Bosse of Wilmington, Del., president, who asserted the alli¬ ance has no connection with the Ger- man government or the German people and that its influence has always been directed toward keeping- alive German ideals and to fostering loyalty to this country. The committee has under considera¬ tion a resolution by Senator King of Utah which would revoke the federal charter of the organization because of its alleged disloyal utterances and ac¬ tivities. 'The alliance has never entertained even the remotest official connection with the German government or the German people," Mr. von Bosse said. "It is a simon-pure American organiza¬ tion, existing only for those living in this country, having American patriot¬ ism, American loyalty and American love for liberty written upon its ban¬ ners." He was interrupted several times in submitting his prepared statement by committee members for cross-examina¬ tion. Position on Lusitania Sinking. "What have you said in condemna¬ tion of the sinking of the Lusitania?" Senator King asked. "The Lusitania was sunk before the United States went to war with Ger¬ many." the witness replied. "Didn't you justify it?" .'*1 justified certain legal phases of it.** he replied. "I took the view be¬ fore the United States went to war that Americans should not go on bel¬ ligerent vessels carrying munitions." Letters written by Mr. von Bosse to a Wilmington newspaper after the European war broke out. justifying Germany's invasion of Belgium, were read. The witness admitted having written the letters, saying he did not believe at that time that Belgium was- neutral. Senator Wolcott of Delaware wanted to know about some articles by Mr. ?on Bosse, referring to the work of -)Eheac grand, busy old Berthas" in Inrakny. ^fhese grand, busy old Berthas which flropped bombs on hospitals and ca- tAtflrals and defenseless communities," suggested Senator King. Written Before TJ. S. Entered War. Mr. von Boese defended his articles, say¬ ing they were written before the United 8tates entered the war. He did not hesi¬ tate in admitting that before the United States went to war he carried on propa¬ ganda work, and that the alliance and himself personally opposed the United States becoming a belligerent. "Our efforts to keep the United States out of the war," he said, "was a call of the blood, because we believed Germany to be waging a war of defense." Mr. von Bo6se defended the actions of [ C. J. Hexamer of Philadelphia, the first I president of the» alliance. "His father served gallantly in our civil war," he said, "and the son, born in America, is a truer and better American than thousands whose lip patriotism Boisily jars the clouds." The witness declared the alliance has inclined the hatred of Anti-Saloon League officials because of its stand against pro¬ hibition, and he attributed some of the charges against it to that source. Mr. von Bosse will resume his testimony probably tomorrow. Adam Timm of Phil¬ adelphia, secretary of the alliance, is to take the stand this afternoon. ROCKVILLE AND COUNTY Spuria1 rorrpspondcnp** IV Star. ROCKVILLE, Md., March 20..Miss Bessie May Thomas, twenty-eight years old, and Fred Burford Beaumont, aged thirty-four, both of Washington, were married in Rockville yesterday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Duffey, paster of the Methodist Church. Mrs. May Edith Coleman, thirty-three years old. of Hunter. Va_, and John C. Phillippe, aged thirty-five, of Washing¬ ton, motored out from Washington yesterday afternoon and were married by Rev. J. W. Duffey. A license has been issued by the clerk of the circuit court here for the mar¬ riage of Howard M. Omdorff, thirty- two years old, and Mrs. Nettie Harper, aged twenty-nine, both of Glen Echo, this county. The military registrants in this county who were married since May 18. 1S17. and who were placed in class 4 by the local draft board, probably will all be placed in class 1 by the district board at Annapolis, thus making them available for immediate military service. In all of these cases, of which there are about seventy-five, appeals were taken by the government, and in nearly every case so far passed upon by the dis¬ trict board the local board has been reversed. The district board takes the position that the pay of the registrant, added to the government allowance for the wife in case he is called, is suffi¬ cient to support the wife. LA GUARDIA TO RESUME FLYING IN FEW WEEKS ROME, Friday, March 15..The In- Juries sustained by Capt. Fiorello H. La Guardia of the American Flying Corps and member of the House of Repre- sentatives from the fourteenth New York district, in a recent airplane ac¬ cident, consisted of a contusion of the left hip, and if no complications arise ho will be able to resume his flying duties in a few weeks. Capt. La Guardia was flying at an al¬ titude of 1,000 feet when he encountered a windstorm which took him several miles out of his course and beyond the limits of the map which he was carry¬ ing as a guide. The aviator endeavored to land in order to get his location and had succeeded in bringing his plane to earth when a wind squall caught it and caused it to capsise. Fortunately the safety belt worn by the tCViator broke and thus Capt. La Guardia was saved from being crushed beneath the motor of the airplane. ' HO-CHANGE Iff TIME TABLES.
