The locomotive l i s t of Grant and i t s predecessors does not e x i s t . Itapparently lost in the move of the worla from Pat ear son to Chicago in 1890, andexcept where the shop number is underlined, the arrangement of numbers of/ purelyguesswork, and i s intended to give a general idea of the number of engines builtby the ccrapany. Also to provide spaoe in this l ia t for additions as more infor-mation coces to l i g h t . ' .

In theHistory cf Bergenand Passaic Counties by Woodford-Nelson, 1382, whenthe Grant V/orka was s t i l l in pperation, the following i s quoted fran pp'i36-37.

"In 1842, Samuel Smith, Abram Collier and George Bradley started a smallfoundry in a building 30x50 f t . on the southeast corner of Broadway and ProspectStreats. In 1848. Smith sold out to Collier and formed a co-partnership withhis brother .7m. C. Smith, Thomas Beggs and Henry V/hitaley.

They leased a ono-story building along the raceway on Mill St . in front ofthe Franklin Hi l l , opposite Ellison S t . , 140 ft . long and 40 ft .deep. Theystarted a foundry and general machine shop there.

^eggs died and his interest was purchased by Yfa. Swinburne, former Supt.at the Rogers Locomotive Works in Paterson. 1!l)a name was changed to Swinburne,Smith & Co., s t i l l in 1848, as a l l the above happened within a few months, "hoyiCDediately la id plans to build locomotives, and built a locomotive shop of brick, two s tor ies , just north of the machine shop and immediately next to the Essex i l i l l ,al o t , s t i l l standing(1882).

They got an order for 10 engines froa the New York & Erie ER, so they boughta mill s i te on Uarket St. opposite Pine and erected a large shop there in 1850,after approximately 15 locomotives had bean bui l t in the original shop. Sirinburaeretired in Juno 1850, from association^with the company and formed his own company.Ee leased a plot of land adjacent to the present Erie tracks on the west sida, extending fiuom Uarket St. to Ell ison, where* he built an immense shop and beganbuilding locomotives on h is own account, under the name of YAn.Sv7inbu.rne & Co.

In 1858, Swinburne sold out to the Erie, which used the factory as a repairshops for sous years, and in la ter days as a storehouse.

The Ifew Jersey Locomotive & Machine Co* was incorporated by the renainirspartners of Swinburne, Smith & Co. in 1851, and carried on the business on lio-ketSt. near Spruce, gradually enlarging the conern unti l sane tins in the 1863-1364period, the stock in the company was bought up by Oliver DeForest Grant, V&G withhis son David B. Grant, and S» Suydsm Grant, ran i t until the death of O.De?.Grant,when David B. Grant took over aotive management.

Uunder 17J State laas, the new owners incorporated the fixa as the Union Loco-motive Worka Uarch 21, 1866, but on April 11, 1867, by special act of the l e g i s -lature, approval was given to change the name to the Grant Locomotive Works, trhichname i t bore unti l i t went out of business. ~

Grant's control of the oon$rn resulted in erecting new buildings during 1664-66on Pine and .Jersey S t s . , and the old ones were enlarged. A magnificent passengerengine,"Alpoiishe^ot t i l l i t shone l ike a mirror, with the boiler covorad with gernansi lver , and cab made of choi&e woods, was sent to the Paris Exposition i n 1867. Itoost $42,000 and was brought back and sold to the Chicago,Rock Island & P a c i f i c In1869-70, the original building on Market St. was enlarged by a 3 story addition on thefront, elegant offices being f i t t e d in the second story.

In the early part of 1872, a l l boiler mako£ in Paterson struck for higherwages, although many of them were then earning what was then a very high TOO, $3per day. Grant instantly ordered the shops closed, and a l l boiler manufacturersin Paterson agroed to lock out strikers, so that most of then were compelled to leavethe c i ty . LIr. was cancelled, i'ha ton completed engines not sent to Russia were rebuilt with dif-ferent boilers and sold to tha Lehigh Valley.

Bavid S. Grant retired January 1, 1880 and was succeeded in nrmacensnt byV7illisa W. Jivens, who since February 1866 had been chief accountant. R. Suydam Grantremained as president and principal stockholder, but apparently took no active part inthe design or construction of locomotives* As of January 1, 1882, 720 men worey& the payroll, with 110 engines completed during 1881 according to Trumbull. A Pater-son newspaper in a feature on the Grant works stated that as of February 1, 1882 a totalof 1450 engines had been comple ted by the concern from it3 origin. Hew buildings hadbeen built recently and more were to be erected in 1882*

All of this information cams to me from the research of Jj1, 31 a wart Grahamand Sylvan R. Wood in tha period from 1945 through 1951, and to i t I have added aatar-i a l given to na by the late Walter Lucas some time in 1941 or 1942. Lucas had foryears made the study of the three locomotive builders in Paterson a special hobby, PTAby means I icnow not what, he found the original Rogers logbook going back to the s tar t ,and made a copy of i t . But the Grant records were not in Paterson according to Lucasard. he had to rely on the Paterson newspapers, and on a book, the "History of Indus-trial Paterson'1 by Trnmbull, published in 1882. Tha February 1,1002 newspaper storyreferred to above, civinr 1450 locomotives completed to that date doo3 not agree with•Trufflbull's figure. He presents a l is t purporting to show the total number of loco-aotives built each year by the three companies which had their origins in Paterson, and in the case of Grant, he gives figures from 1849 to the end of 1881 ohowine atotal of 1555 locomotives. This l i s t does not include five In own to have been built

• in 1848, two in 1849 and three in 1851. Adding thase ten to Trurabull's figures,i t would appear that 1565 locomotives were built to the end of 1881, leaving only.323 to be built between that date and 1893 for a total of 1888.

I t is difficult to reconcile al l gathered data with the indicatod facts. It is wholly probable that shop numbers were assigned to locomotives upon receipt oforders for them, as «as the custom of many build*er3 of that day, and there is l i t t l eioubt that locomotives were often not shipped in numerical sequence, also a conmon

-practice among builders. Moreover, Railroad records were often based upon the dateV_.hat equipment was placed in service rather than the actual date of construction. Any

material lapse of time between the date an order was placed and the date on which thalocorrttives went into service would seriously disrupt the relationship between shopnumbers and construction dates in any ideal system of chronological shop numbers.

That there were orders cancelled from tins to tine is definitely known, andit seems logical to assume that where such cancellations occurred the shop numbers, whichmay have been assigned upon receipt of the order, were not later used, as this occurstine and again in other locomotive builders' l i s ts* It can only be surmised that someof the blank numbers in the Grant l i s t are due to cancellations, and further, that theshown total of 1888 engines could be reduced to some extent* Forgetting about the24 engines built in Chicago, the last Grant shop number used in Pateraon probably wasin the 1790s. A jump of 250 numbers appears in the 1871 data, viiereas Truz:-bull 's l i s t shows that the company's best year was 1873 when 131 locomotives were built*This is no reflection on Trumbull*. as he probably printed what the Grant executivesgave him as the. gospel truth* His figures for Danforth and. Rogers areequally variable*and in the case of the latter we have practically the oompla te l i s t to check Trun-bull 's figures with* . In 1943, the American Locomotive Company trumpetedthe building of their 70,000th locomotive, but this total did not take into accountseveral hundred cancellations where the shop numbers were never used* I\Tot to beoutdone, Baldwin in early 1944 announced the completion of their 70,000th loco-

locomotive. Hot only did thoy have cancellations through the year3, t u tths shop numbers from 64758 to 67402 wore assigned to U. 5 . Army LI-4 Uodiun Taulcs,-which wore assembly jobs, and certainly not railroad equipment in any seise of theword. ^lco assigned hundreds of shop numbers to steara shovels, and so on*)

The following table is based primarily upon Trumbull's figures, to whichhaTO been added the above-mentioned ten engines, apparently not included in hisreoords for•1848,1849 and 1851, and show3 shop numbers which ninht have beenassigned to engines during the joars 1843 to 1881, and further based upon thesupposition that a new series of numbers was started at the beginning of 1853,allowing for 58 built by Swinburne,Smith & Co., and the New Jersey L&H Co* to that

Each of the Paters on builders had to find other work to do during thohard times which followed the panic of 1873* Danforth spent the whole year of 1675 .•••and part of 1876 building a i l k and cotton spinning machinery. Starting in 1875and going through 1837, Danforth changed the gauge on most of the JXL&\'i engines fraa.six feet to standard. Starting in 1880, Grant rebuilt a total of 34 4-4-0 typelocomotives for the New York, lake Erie & Western, the last one being converted fraasix foot gauge to standard In 1685. These engines, like most of the other Zriebroad gauge engines converted In their own shops, at Grant, Dickson and Danforth,

( were standardized with 18x22 cylinders and as many of them prsbably got new boilers,•-v they were practically new engines, but they were not assigned shop cumbers. If

_v Sthose engines were included In ths Trumbull totals , the number of engines built byv v.-Grant would exceed the shop numbers at certain known dates* Grant: displayed tfca

Constr. No* and year built by engraving i t In the bras3 ornamental steaa chest s ide .These figures are so small that even in very sharp builders original photos, i t i svery d i f f icu l t to read the shop number* With the advent.of the Westin^house a ir -brake, those builders which had been displaying their nassplato on c scvo'zl betweenthe driving wheels were forced to either adopt the Grant and Danforth method of en-graving on the side of the steamohest, or use plates which Baldwin adopted veryearly* Grant chose a diamond-shaped plato with very small letters and uas&rals,so builder's photos showing Grant plate3 are just as hard to identify as those withthe steam chest engravings* Grant a lso had a rectan&ilar plats in 1890 which wi l lbe discussed la ter .

During 1881 Grant began so l i c i t ing orders for narrow gauge enginesin earnest, having tooled up and made patterns for 4-4-0, 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 types la3 ft .gauge. They bui l t 30 consolidations for the Denver & Bio Grande in 1881,completed a very large order for the Texas & St.Louis la 1681 and 1882, end built20 engines for the Toledo* Cincinnati & St .Louis in 1682-1683, besides smaller ordersfor a number of other l ines* The 1*0,4 St.L*v?ent bankrupt before any large pay-ment had been made on their locomotives* and in 1885 the engines were a l l repossessedby Grant* Some were repaired at the Cleveland, Delphos & St .Louis shops in Ohioand shiE?d to new owners from there; the rest were returned to Pater son, some re-built , and the las t two were sold In 1890. During 1883 Grant built a large orderof consolidations for th • Pennsylvania and lOEDgals ordorod by the New York, Fcnns.,& Ohio were shipped In «7 - icjy 1884* During the balance of the yoar, Grant built

reported that tho Grant Works was preparing the resun» work, but said nothing of anyordor3 havine been rooeived. Tho great job of standard gauging tho broad caugo Erie,th9 DL&\7, Ohio & Mississippi and lessor 6-foot gsuga line3 was done, and tho rush of

- enthusiasm for narrow gauge railroads was waning. Baldvi n had taken the lion1 3 shareof the narrow gauge business and none of the Paterson builders oould oorapete with them.

Another factor adding to Grant*a troubles was the failure of the Toledo, Cincinnati& St. Louis to pay for 20 narrow gauge engines built for them In 1001 and 1362. It wasnecessary for Grant to repossess these engines from the bankrupt railroad in 1SGG and torese l l them at substantial discounts to narrow gauge railroads a l l over the country.

. In tie fa l l of 1886 the Erie gave Grant an order for 10 heavy consolidation engines, for which the factory had been rebuilt, and there is evidence that about 25 engineswere turned out by Grant in that year.

Early in 1887 orders were rec^ved from tha Utah & Northern, the Milwcutoe andseveral other roads for passenger engines, but only three heavy consolidations forthe ilontaaa Union E.E.were bu i l t . Disaster then struck the factory, for on Septem-ber 7, 1867 fire razed about half of the buildings including the office and tho mainbuilding on which wa3 the medallion of Napoleon III , a facsimile of the prize givento the locomotive AMERICA, received at the Paris Exposition in 1867. Productionceased for a number of months, and the large order for ten-whoel locomotives fortha Hilvvaukee was not completed until July 1888. This seems to have taken the heartout of Grant's sales efforts, and production in 1889 was at a low ebb. Tho lastknjvna shop numbers for Grant engines built in Paterson were Hos.1783 through. 17G9,built between December 1888 and february 1889. In the early part of 1890, fiveLeslie iiotary Snowplows were built at Grant due to the inabil i ty ofCooko to keep upwith tha Leslie orders. These Grant rotaries bore the Leslie shop number on tha-buildor'j plate, which, was a home-made, poorly designed rectangular shape, in con-trast to tha beautifully designed, diamond-shaped plate previously used. The prob-able reason for this change in plates was that most of tho engineers, designers andoffice employees had been la id off, and plans were afoot to move the company toChicago. . v: Rumors of th i s more appeared f i r s t in the trade papers late in 1686, and

''as reported in the "Locomotive Engineer',' the "Railroad Gazette" and the "National Car& Locomotive Builder,14 a group of Chicago businessmen who were anxious to establisha locomotive works of major capacity in their oity had interested Grant in moving there.2h9 Grant Locomotive Works of Chicago was chartered January 3, 1890, and 650 acres ofland in Cicero, 111. costing $602,000 was purchased. The stock in the na-.7 companywas almost a l l subscribed by R. T. Jeffrey, ex General Manager of the I l l ino is Central,George LI. Sogie and Willard T. Block. H. S. Grant and partners came out frox Pater-son, and T7ra. H. Fanner, Jr.was elected president of the new company. Alaost a l l theheavy machinery was to be new, only oertain patterns and special tools or drawingsbeing; sent from Paterson, Construction was delayed by l i t igat ion over the land t i t l e ,but this was sett led in December 1690. Buildings costing approximately a million dol-lars were erected during 1691 and 1892. After personnel problems had been solved, the factory was ready for business in the fal l of 1892 and began work on a tr ia l orderof five 0-4-0 switchers for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul. On Dec.30, 1892the Burlington & Missouri River ordered 25 Class K-2 4-6-0 engines, and as soon as thelast Xilv.-eutee R.P.. switcher was completed, work was begun on the Burlington order. The f irst four ten-wheel engines finished were diverted to the St. Paul & Kansas CityShort Li£o and in June 1893 three engines were delivered on the B. & M. R. order.

. It has been said that only one was delivered and that i t was so unsatisfactory thatthe order for the balance of the engines was cancelled.

This does not seem to agree with the known fac t s . The three engines de-l ivered to the 3 . & M. R. remained in service for over 50 years. The real reasonfor failure to continue deliveries on the order was a strike in mid-June of 1693, called

, .oy the employees in protest of the piecework 3ystem, a novelty in the Chicago aroa.'.'ie plant was atixt devm, and since the camjasny had overextended i t se l f in buildingv.ch a iarL'o factory, i t was forced into receivership on July 9-, 1693, l i a b i l i t i e s

The new owners found enough material on hand to complete 12 of tho ton-wheel

engines, and these were a l l built in 1895. Almost two years passed before a cuntonerwas found, and the engines were 3old in 1097 on the dates given in tho l i s t . 7;hyiiemens-IIalsice started with dhop No.1819 instead of No.1813 is not obvious, but therecords of the Kansas City Southern, successors to the Kan3as City, Pittsburgh & Gulf

iow the shoij numbers as indicated in the l i s t . The compiler of this l i s t czn. findno evidence in the publio press that these 12 engines wore built by Grant in 1093,sent to the B. & II. R. and returned to the factory as unsatisfactory, a3 claimed byseveral historians in the past. There is too much evidence in the form of ncr.vs itemsin the trade weeklies, which followed thefortunes of the ill-fated Grant oompany indetail . , and which several tins a mentioned the uncompleted engines.

A word of caution to anyone reading the following l i s t of Grant locomotives.Tha dates built for the early engines is usually the date in service as shorn in theowners' records. As the Hew York. & ilrie went through Paterson, iirie engines builtat Grant or i t3 predecessors were probably placed in service within days of completion.Engines for the mid-west were probably received a month or more after being turned cutof the factory, and those for the far we3t built prior to completion of the PacificRailroad in 1869 required six months or more for transit by sailing vessel around theHorn. If the construction number is underlined, then this number has been veri-fied either fror. builder's photos or fran railroad company records. These lat tsrnumbers are s t i l l coming to light, and sczna of them conflict with each other; es-pecially in the case of the Texas & St. Louis. Foreign orders are of courselostto us except those sent to Russia in 1875, and several builder's photos reveal shopnumbers on foreign orders.
