Grace after Grace Alex McCandless Youth Ministry Intern

14 The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory and the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and Truth . . .16 Indeed we have all received grace after grace from His fullness, 17 for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:14, 16-17, HCSB)

I have read this passage several times, but I have never fully understood the phrase “grace after grace.” Other translations read “grace in place of grace” (NIV), “grace for grace” (NKJV), and “grace upon grace” (ESV). From these interpretations and what I’ve heard others say, I took it simply to mean we had been given an immeasurable amount of grace or a never-ending supply of grace from Jesus Christ. This assertion is true, but after further study, I believe it means God has supplied us with two different, but equally necessary, “graces”.

The first grace is the Law, given by God through Moses (v. 17). The Law is a “grace” because without it, we would not know the character and nature of God (Sin is a rejection of God’s divine character and personality, not the breaking of an arbitrary rule.) or His standards for us as members of His family. Paul writes in Romans, “I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet’ ” (7:7).

The second great grace God has shown us is salvation. “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” (Romans 5:8). Grace is God’s unmerited favor shown to us. We have all sinned (3:23), we deserve death (6:23a), but “…the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (6:23b).

Accept the “grace after grace” given to us by God our Father. He wants to have an intimate relationship with you. Not a religious affiliation.

The word “improvement” does not mean anything is wrong. It simply means there is opportunity for things to be even better.

The love within this delightful church is refreshing. It creates a positive atmosphere and is uplifting. Along with many others, “Miss” Trudy and I are enjoying the blessing of it. However, there is an even greater opportunity to share it.

An extensive study was conducted involving 8,600 people in 39 denominations. It was intended to measure the loving quotient of the memberships. It shows loving churches are growing churches. Loving people attract more people than location, denomination, and doctrine.

They scored the churches on a scale of 1 to 100. Of the 12 denominations scoring below 65, all but two were declining. Of the 13 denominations scoring above 65, all were growing. The denomination scoring the highest was the Southern Baptist at 74.

For a member to be a contented member, they need to develop a core of at least six friends within the church. Enjoy them. However, reach out to persons not in your “friendship” circle. There is no way of knowing how meaningful an act of love can be to a person, what void it might fill, what hurt you might heal..

Evaluate what you can do to show more love to more people. Be observant and reach out in Christ

Our Lord is preparing this church for him and him for this church. In His time when He has gotten both ready He will bring the two together. That will be a wonderful day.

You can be confident your Pastor Search Committee is working diligently to achieve God’s purpose in this vital decision and timing. Any delay is worth it to get God’s man. It is entirely possible your new pastor could serve this church as long as I was blessed to serve the one our Lord planted me in. That was 35 years.

I share now the entire message the old Apostle John preached when he returned to Ephesus the last time and addressed the congregation: “Little children love one another.” Keep on loving one another ---- and others.

His and your loving servant, Nelson L. Price

C.A.R.E. - Christians Actively Reaching Everyone Kristie Russell Ministry Assistant for Missions, Outreach, Discipleship & Young Adults

We’ve all seen it...the blue C.A.R.E. card. Every Sunday, the blue C.A.R.E. card gets mentioned from the pulpit and it is passed along with the offering plate. It is used by both visitors and members. It is used for visitor information, information requests, prayer requests and comments. Once it has been filled out, do you ever wonder what happens to that blue C.A.R.E. card?

Every Tuesday, that blue C.A.R.E. card along with dozens of other cards, prayer lists, the homebound/shut in list, Sunday school rolls and church family rosters are worked up in the C.A.R.E. ministry. While the blue C.A.R.E. card is the backbone of the C.A.R.E. ministry, C.A.R.E. is so much more than a blue C.A.R.E. card. CARE is a ministry of our church that seeks to minister to our church family and community. Among those we have an opportunity to care for are...

Jesus and the disciples were. Notice that Jesus received the people and did not send them away. Jesus saw the need that the people had, and he spoke to them about the kingdom of God!

It is funny that as much time as the disciples spent with Jesus, sometimes they didn’t get it! When the day was getting long they requested Jesus send the crowds away to get something to eat, yet Jesus stops the disciples but instructing them to give the people sometime to eat. A HUGE task! After complaining about the cost and size of that meal, all they could find was a boy with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread (most likely similar in size to 5 biscuits and 2 fairly small fish).

Jesus blessed the fish and bread and broke it. And it was given out to the people with

-those who are in the hospital or have upcoming procedures -our Bible Study/Fellowship groups (Sunday school) -our homebound -those that have lost loved ones -those in the nursing home -un-churched family, friends, neighbors and co-workers

Every week, we have teams that go out on visitation, a team that makes cards, a team that sends out birthday cards, individuals who pray, and people who write notes of encouragement and make phone calls. In addition, participants can also help with hands on projects around the church. These are just some of the ministry opportunities you will find at CARE.

We start off by enjoying a meal and fellowship beginning at 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall (First floor, B Building). Dinner is served until 6:30 pm and then we work from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. One unique aspect of CARE is that you are asked to serve once a month. CARE meets on every Tues-day evening, except for the 5th Tuesday of

the month.

We are always looking for more people to get involved. The more people who get involved...the more lives that can be touched. If you would like further information on the C.A.R.E. ministry, please contact Kristie Russell at 429-6303 or just come and join us on a Tuesday night.

plenty to spare. Here is the underlying point I want you to see. The disciples need to see this because THEY needed to be broken. When we let Jesus bless and break our lives, there will be plenty of us to go around. But how many of us do this on a daily basis. How many of us give ALL we have to Jesus to break and be given to His ministry. It amazes me that the disciples didn’t quite get it off the bat, but a little boy gave all he had and Jesus blessed not only him and the disciples, but a crowd of 5,000 men plus women and children. We are talking about a crowd of quite possibly 10 to 15 thousand people!

My challenge to you is come to Jesus as you are. All your faults, problems, issues and the things you try so hard to fix. Come to Jesus and let Him break you and them put you together into the masterpiece that he has designed you to be.

Broken PiecesNick Campbell Youth Assistant, Middle School Emphasis

In Luke chapter 9:10-17 we read the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. We are all familiar with this story, but I want you to see the deeper meaning to this story. The 12 disciples had just returned from one of their journeys. Jesus then takes them to a deserted place to spend time rejoicing with his disciples about all they had done and seen. I am sure that the disciples were physical tired and emotional over everything they had just seen and they wanted to spend time refueling and learning from Jesus.

But as they withdrew to this deserted place, a great multitude of people followed them, many had most likely ran to the place where
