Balancing Life’s Demands: Biblical Priorities for a Busy LifeJerry HyderAssociate Pastor of Adults

“I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish He didn’t trust me so much.” - Mother Teresa

”Sometimes we get so busy rowing the boat, we don’t take time to see where we are going..or what we are becoming.” - Wayne Cordero

“I learned that we can do ANYTHING, but we can’t do EVERYTHING...at least at the same time.” - Dan Millman

“ Life can become full very fast. If we first block off time for what is most important in our lives, it can actually free us up to really focus on the rest.” - David Zerfoss

Although we are people of faith, we can sometimes forget our human limitations, especially in a world of so many demands , crazy schedules and over- commitments.

Are you busy, tired, stressed out, and stretched to the limit? Does life seem a little out of control? Are you running long on “to do’s” and short on time?...If so, join me this fall as I lead a new Bible Study on Balancing Life’s Demands: Biblical Priorities For A Busy Life by Chip Ingram. We will look at some very practical encouragement from God’s Word. We will learn how to put “first things first” and find peace in the midst of pressure and adversity. Sessions include: The Peace and Power of a Prioritized Life, How to Put and Keep First Things first, How to Escape the “Rat Race” ... Forever.

This weekly class will begin on Wednesday night at 6pm starting September 10th in Room E-218. I look forward to seeing you there!

CreativityJared OwnbyCollege & Young Adult Ministry Assistant

Are you a creative person? Do you enjoy work when you get to create an atmosphere that is productive? Do you build houses? Do you serve guests? Do you sell things? Are you a parent or grandparent? It sure seems that each of us has many opportunities to showcase creativity!

Our God is Creator. He created everything from nothing—ex nihilo. Have you ever been stirred to wonder at that? It should bring us into a state of awe.

Try for a second to create something from nothing in your mind. [Seriously! Try it.] You may have come up with a unicorn-like creature or something. But the only capacity you and I have is to take what already exists and make new conglomerations. We can communicate meaning through these new pairings and new mixes, but we can’t make something from nothing.

What do we learn? We aren’t God. He is totally different from us. Wow, I need that reminder—often! Praise God for his transcendence!

Here’s something amazing: even though we can’t create from nothing it doesn’t mean

feared that it was benefiting my professional

development more than I was benefiting the

school. Although Christians are legally allowed

in schools, most do not welcome them. When I

first arrived, Grange Primary was not too keen

on having Christians in their classrooms, but,

miraculously, they agreed to let me in. I had

to be very subtle about my Christianity while

there, though. I could have been asked to leave

at any time, and that would have greatly

damaged the relationship between the school

and the church. I struggled with this balance

almost constantly. By not being able to boldly

witness, I didn’t know if I was having any

success at all.

As He often does, God blew me away by

showing me just how much of a difference I

truly made in the school in my short time there.

Before I left, the school had agreed to

advertise the church’s Children’s Holiday

we can’t create. In fact, God has given us the ability to create—and sometimes the proper response to seeing a glimpse of the glory of God is to create something that will communicate to others the glory we just saw. Check out Psalm 96:1, “Sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD all the earth!” A new song? But aren’t the old ones good enough? Sure they may be good—but they were new at some point, right? Sometimes new words and new music give new connection to old Gospel-truth.

Let’s jump in and be creative. Take a long look at the glory of God and put words together in your own way to communicate His goodness. Paint a picture and thank God for the ability to create. Throw some pottery (not across the room…) and thank God for His perfect creativity. Create an atmosphere of welcome for some guests and thank God for welcoming you to His family table.

Here’s my creative attempt:

Blessing upon blessingLayer upon layerFrom the Creator flows graceIn the death of our SaviorOut of darkness’ domainTo the Kingdom of LightCame this dead, stony heart

To the blind he gave sight

Blessing upon blessingGrace upon graceHis breath has all powerWho dares see His face?Yet the God of all creationCares intimatelyCrushed His Son for our sinWhom He raised pow’rfully!

Blessing upon blessingBy grace through faithReconciled us from sinYes--he gave us Christ’s placeHis righteousness oursAn amazing exchange!Blessing upon blessingLift His praiseworthy name!

Program in their newsletter; decided to let a team

from the church come in and do a lunchtime

program in which they would tell stories, make

crafts, play games, and build relationships; and

agreed to a new mentoring partnership in which

individual church members would be paired with

struggling students in the school. In just a couple

of months, the school went from not wanting any

Christian involvement to agreeing to so much

more than any of us had ever dreamed possible.

I ask that you continue to pray for Australia,

as Christianity there is not the norm and most

people are not open to the Gospel; continue

to pray for Grange Baptist and all their

ministries; continue to pray for Grange Primary,

that relationships between the church and school

will grow even stronger and many seeds will be

sown; and continue to pray for me as I seek what

the Lord wants for me next.

Glimpse of Time in AustraliaMolly Spurlock

I spent ten weeks this summer on a mission

trip in Adelaide, Australia. While there, I worked

at Grange Baptist Church as an intern,

being involved in every aspect of the church. I

worked with small children in Playgroup; school

children in Kids Club, the Children’s Holiday

Program, and Christian Option Program through

the schools; teens in youth group, small groups,

and on a mission trip to the outback; and adults

in various ministries, such as café and home

groups. I saw God move in more ways than I can

fit in this small space.

Another incredible opportunity I had was to

work in Grange Primary School as an unofficial

teacher’s assistant. It proved to be one of my fa-

vorite ministries, yet one of my biggest struggles.

I loved getting to be in the classrooms, but I
