Welcome Class of 2016! Bienvenidas a Wellesley! My name is Mared Alicea‐Westort, and I am the Advisor to Latina Students and the Assistant Dean of Intercultural Education for the College. Our office is part of the Division of Student Life, and serves as a resource for all Latina Students. I hope you find this handbook helpful as you spend your first year at Wellesley. It includes a little bit of everything you need to know in your first year at Wellesley College. As an Advisor to Latina Students, I provide individual advising, leadership consultation, referrals, information on internships and scholarships, and advocacy. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage you to get to know me, and
my services, and learn how you can get involved in the Latina community of the College. Look out for my programs, particularly Dia de Los Muertos, Parrandas, Latina Month and the Latina Cultural Show (and, contact me if you’re interested in participating.) If you have any questions, or would just like to say “hi”, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (781) 283‐2958, e‐mail [email protected], or stop by my office in Billings 309. You can also learn more by checking out my website: www.wellesley.edu/LatinaAdvisor and my facebook page www.facebook.com/wellesleycollegelatinaadvisor. I look forward to meeting you, and wish you a wonderful year! Best,
Mared Alicea-Westort Assistant Dean of Intercultural Education Advisor to Latina Students
Get Involved!
One of the best ways to get involved with the Latina community at Wellesley is to participate in the annual Latina Cultural Show (held in April, Latina Month.) This celebration of culture incorporates singing, dancing, monologues, skits, poetry, and much more! Whether you’re performing or working behind the scenes, this fun‐filled program is an excellent way to celebrate your heritage and the strength of the Latina community at Wellesley.

Exploring Boston Boston is the capital and largest city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The largest city in New England, Boston is considered the economic and cultural center of the region and is sometimes regarded as the unofficial “Capital of New England.” In 2008 Boston had an estimated population of 609,023, making it the twenty‐second largest in the country. With many colleges and universities within the city and surrounding area, Boston is a center of higher education and a center for medicine. The city’s economy is also based on research, electronics, engineering, finance, and technology – principally biotechnology.
