Planner for the Programs of First Presbyterian Church January to May 2017

First Presbyterian Church g 1702 Iowa Street g Davenport, Iowa 52803 g 563.326.1691 g fpcdavenport.org

Welcome to the fourth issue of FIRSTPRESS, sharing all of the programmingfor First Presbyterian Church. We invite you to browse through the pages, let your imagination and spirit be free toexplore the opportunities offered.

Director of Christian Education Tiffany Horvath along with the CEFYCommittee shared these thoughts aboutthe theme:

“Imagine.”

“There’s no stronger word to define childhood than that. From the first time wefight off imaginary dragons to when weenvision what we will be when we growup, the world of children IS the world ofimagination. They can become anything, define anything, seek anything: there areno barriers, there are no “buts”, there areno limits. We can do and create whateverwe dream…whatever we imagine.”

“What if this is part of the vision Christshared when he encouraged everyone to become as children? What if we were to go back into that world of pureimagination and all that is good and joyful and see that, as the children of aGod who loves all, forgives all, andblesses all—there is no limit to what we can dream and what we can imaginetogether? And through our imagina-tions, what could we build together, asone people, under God? Not a focussolely on children, not a focus solely onadults—but a focus and a dream ofeveryone, together, embracing what wecan imagine and embracing what we canbring into the future together?”

The Small Group Task Force shares:

As part of Envisioning 20/20, smallgroup ministry has been identified as

an avenue to move toward our GodSized Dreams and certainly ties directly into imagination.

Small groups can have a variety of different focus areas, but ultimately theyneed to be based in showing Christianlove to one another (inside and outsideof First Pres). The focus of a smallgroup can range from Spiritual Development, Christian Education &Worship, Support Groups, Education &Training or sharing the love of Christthrough Fellowship activities.

Small groups can be ongoing or havea finite existence. Small groups canbe initiated and led by any churchmember. They can also be initiatedby Staff, Session/Deacon or otherFPC committees. Where appropriate, members are encouraged to invite visitors to participate in small groups.Expenses associated with a smallgroup or its activities will be the responsibility of the group’s members.

HOW TO START A SMALLGROUP CONNECTION:

1. Develop the idea for a small groupconnection you would like to start.Pick up a form from the Small GroupConnection bulletin board or FPC’swebsite and complete the informationon the form:

2. Turn the form into the church office. It will then be posted on thebulletin board and on the church’swebsite.

3. Keep track of people who have contacted you with interest; feel freeto reach out to folks to join the group.

4. Once you have all your responses, finalize with your group when andwhere you will meet.

If you intend to meet at the church, fill out and submit a Building UseForm (BUF) to the church officeto reserve a meeting space. (Usethe calendar on the church websiteto verify availability.)

Prayer

Grant, O God, that your holy and

life-giving Spirit may so move

every human heart, that the barriers

which divide us may crumble,

suspicions disappear, and hatreds

cease, and that, with our divisions

healed, we might live in justice

and peace; through your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Purpose: To enrich our faith by reading and discussing Essays onFaith by Anne Lamott. Lamott is a New York Times-bestselling novelist/essayist who writes about faith, hope, chaos, and grace. She writes with honesty, compassion, and a pureness of voice. Explore Aspects of St. Benedict’s SpiritualityFacilitator: Mark Jones (563-332-9314; [email protected])

Purpose: St. Benedict wrote rules for those living in his monastery which collectively have become known as St. Benedict’s Rule. It has been described as “Christ centered, rooted in relationships, and practically oriented.” Most aspects of The Rule can apply to all Christians, not just those in monasteries. Certain aspects of The Rule are explained in the book “St. Benedict’s Toolbox” and practical applications are explored. Study with others the sections on prayer, stability, obedience, and hospitality.

Lenten Small Groups: Gun Violence, Gospel Values mobilizing in response to God’s callFacilitator: Rev. Dr. Richard Miller (563-326-1691; [email protected])

Purpose: Among many other choices you might make to be involved in a small group study in 2017, you might consider signing up to study and discuss Gun Violence, Gospel Values mobilizing in response to God’s call. This is actually the title to a resolution produced by a friend of mine named Bryan Miller, andadopted by the 219 General Assembly (2010) of our denomination. We will be reading this resolution and following a study guide provided for four weeks in Lent.As the Stated Clerk of our denomination clearly stated in a cover letter to this resolution: “Preventing gun violence is sometimes a quite controversial matter as itcan be associated with efforts to ban certain weapons, ammunition, or recreational uses of guns. This resolution presents a different approach, one focused on preventing illegal guns from getting into the wrong hands, especially in our cities. As a Tennessean raised with hunting as part of my culture, I appreciate the difference in strategy through some new regulation is still recommended.” If you are interested in having a conversation that involves a different approach, focusedon prevention and safety as key elements of our conversations, then sign up for a small group on any of the group dates provided below.

Times: Mondays, 10:00 AM (March 6-27); Tuesdays, 7:00 PM (March 7-28); Wednesdays, 6:00 PM (March 8-29); Saturdays, 9:00 AM (March 4-25)

Before Lent, why not enjoy some pancakes on “Fat Tuesday?” So come and enjoy a delicioushot pancake supper. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. Shrove Tuesdayoriginated during the Middle Ages. As in contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order toconsume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days.

MusikgartenWhat would happen if we started a music class for babies, toddlers and their parents at FPC? Whatwould happen if we planned for this to class to meet between services on Sunday mornings? Wouldparents be willing to sit on the floor with their kids while singing songs and playing peek-a-boogames, sometimes with chiffon scarves on their heads? Would they play instruments and dance together? Would they not only enjoy the family bonding and learning time, but also make newfriends with other young families and their children?

We imagined this several years ago and we’re happy to say that it’s happening in our Musikgarten program now! Our children are learning language, moving and dancing, playing instruments and singing together in a God-centered, musical community at FPC.

Our 30 minute Musikgarten class meets between services on Sunday mornings from 10:20-10:50 on the third floor of the Christian Education building, in Room 307, following the Sunday School schedule. Come and join us! If youhave questions or would like more information, please contact Kathy Middleton([email protected]; 563-505-0471).

On the evening of Sunday, February 12, the Sanctuary Choirpresents a Choral Evensong Service for the Season of Epiphanytide at 7:30 PM. Although new to First Presbyterian, the service of Evensongdates back to the Fourth Century. Originally a liturgy as part of the

monastic hours, Evensong services grew into a rich tradition outside of Catholicism (most notably theChurch of England) to incorporate a great emphasis on choral music, and today a growing number ofchurches across many denominations feature these services regularly. Please join us for a meaningful and reflective service of hymns, psalms, readings, and prayers.

Paper HeartsFebruary is the month for love. Show your love for others in the community and help the DeaconsOutreach Committee with the Paper Hearts drive. Toilet paper, something we all take for granted, is the #1 item that the shelters lack. Beginning in February, you can bring new packages of toilet paperto Fellowship Hall. The Deacons will be collecting all month and on March 1 will take everything to Humility of Mary for distribution to their shelters. Show a stranger some love this month by donating toilet paper.
