from homelessness to housing

Page 2: Fiscal Year 2019-2020 Annual Report

It was a trying year, to be sure. From a global health pandemic, to a national reckoning around racial injustice, to an economic recession that threatened the housing stability of low income house-holds across the county, it felt like the challenges just kept coming. Nevertheless, I am immensely proud of all we manged to accomplish, together. By quickly adapting our safety protocols and en-gagement strategies, we managed to keep all of our programs running during the pandemic. We formally launched Argyle Gardens, our innovative, modular housing complex in North Portland. To better protect those in our shelter programs, we also piloted the opening of a motel-based shel-ter designed to safely meet the needs of medically vulnerable individuals. Our incredible housing teams helped more than 900 people end their homelessness and access housing. And across our programs, we continued to track our progress in assisting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and pushed ourselves to find ways to do better. Without a doubt, this year demonstrated the strength of our community in the face of adversity.

Thank you for showing up, staying committed, and investing in work that makes a difference each day in the lives of so many of our neighbors.

Dear Friends, I want to start this letter by thanking you for sticking by us during this incredibly difficult year. We are deeply grateful for the hundreds of supporters who helped us weather this crisis - whether by making masks from home, dropping off a meal for our shelter guests, or by participating in our virtual gala. Your commitment to making Port-land a more compassionate place for all members of our community means a great deal to our entire team.

Supporting our CommunityOur work in action

Housing Access & RetentionThe ultimate goal of our work is to see individuals thrive in housing. In FY20 we helped 900 people access permanent housing. We provide support through Retention Case Managers to ensure that once housed, those we serve remain housed. Of those housed in permanent supportive housing by our agency, 100% were housed one year after their placement.

Innovative Housing Solutions Argyle Gardens, a deeply affordable cohousing project, opened in May of 2020. By pursuing unique design, construction, and housing models, we were able to achieve significant cost savings and offer rents as low as $300 for tenants. Within months of opening, the complex was fully leased, providing 72 units of housing for low-income individuals ex-iting homelessness.

Shelter as a Bridge to HousingWhen COVID-19 hit, we had to adjust our shelter op-erations to account for physical distancing and uni-versal precautions. Our team sprung into action to ensure that those we serve were kept safe. Within months, we opened the Banfield Shelter Motel, a non-congregate shelter for 60 medically vulner-able participants, complete with on-site medical care and case management.

Engaging our CommunityWith traditional events and in-person volunteer-ing on-pause, we had to get creative to ensure that the community stayed engaged with our work. We hosted our first virtual gala - raising over $380,000 - and created opportunities for individuals to sup-port our work from home. We even hosted a hybrid version of our annual Stand Down event, bringing resources and support to hundreds of Veterans.

In November 2020, we held our annual Truckload of Coats event sponsored by Safeway and Kink.FM. We filled two large trucks with coats and other items to keep those we serve warm during the coldest months of the year.
