THIS IS NOT A TRICK QUESTION and I am sure there are valid answers. One that may top that long list would be a camping area near one of Northern Michigan’s beautiful lakes. Both the Great Lakes and many inland lakes provide campers with excellent opportunities for swimming, boat-ing, fishing, and other water activities.

Just looking at any lake at any time of the day is an enjoyable experience, and the more you look the more changes you may notice. The waves, the clouds overhead, the wind, the people using the water to sail or kayak and even the fish, birds and other wildlife all contribute to our love of the lake.

Did you know that lakes are classified as a living thing? Just like forests, plants and people, lakes age and sometimes even disappear.

Many things can contribute to lake decline. Over use by people can result in problems with erosion of shores. Chemical run off from farms, roads, septic systems, and lawns have caused problems. Another major concern is aquatic invasive species introduced into the water.

So who is responsible for the introduction of the plants and animals that invade our waters and what can be done about it? Many lakes in the north have had problems for 40 years or more. These problems have occurred for differ-ent reasons and once established are extremely difficult to reverse. Sometimes weeds attached to boats, motors, or trailers move weeds from one area to another. Ducks, birds and animals can also move plants and seeds. Even things can stick to your fishing equipment including waders.

In Michigan, for the most part, the residents that live on and near a lake are responsible to the management neces-

Why do you camp where you do?sary to keep their lake pristine. This is usually done through the formation of a Lake Improvement Board funded by a Special Assessment District and contributions from Lake Associations, Cities, Counties, and Townships.

Houghton Lake is the largest inland lake in Michigan. Over a period of years this beautiful lake experienced out of control Eurasian Water Milfoil. These weeds made swimming and boating in most of the lake hazardous. In time, and at a cost of over one million dollars, condi-tions improved. Problems with this same invasive

plant occur today in most northern lakes. Solutions are out there for helping solve this problem and campers can help. Please wash and dry your boat, motor and trailer before moving from one lake to another. Do not move live fish or bait. Clean bilge and live wells on board your boat. Look for tag-alongs like leaches stuck to the bottom of your canoe or kayak. If possible travel around weed beds as Milfoil spreads by fragmentation caused by boating through it.

There is much work being done by both volunteers and professionals to ensure that Northern Michigan lakes are properly cared for. Everyone doing their part can help eliminate the threats from Asian, Silver, and grass carp, zebra mussels, Eurasian Water Milfoil and a host of other undesirable plants and animals that threaten these beauti-ful waters. Check with your local people at the campground where you are staying to find out if there are issues in the area and how to deal with them.

Finally, enjoy your Northern Michigan camping experi-ence where the lakes and water are most likely part of it. l

2017 CAMPER MYSTERY QUILT (PART 1)Welcome to the 2017 Northern Camper Mystery Quilt.

This is my fifth year of writing this article and my fourth original quilt—where has the time gone? My life has changed a bit over those five years too. I am doing less work—and volunteering—in some areas and more in others. One of my paying jobs is working part-time at Northern Hearth (see ad below) which as my co-workers (Susie and Sally) and I like to say, “allows us to pay for our ‘habit’ (an addiction to fabric and other quilting related items)”. It is also a rather dangerous place to work when the new fabric arrives. Oh well, just more to pet. If you are not a quilter you might not get that, but there really is something wonderful about petting good quality fabric.

I had the privilege of designing the Row by Row quilt this year for Northern Hearth; however, I must give a lot of credit to Susie and Sally for coming up with some ideas to get me started. This led to the next step, the challenge of creating a project for the Fall Shop Hop. I am fortunate that it coincides quite nicely with the Northern Camper Mystery Quilt, which means that for those of you who can’t wait to see the finished project, it will be up in the store later this summer.

I have always wanted to design something reminiscent of the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural designs—especially his windows and art panels—and the fat quarters for the Shop Hop seemed to lend themselves to this very well. This quilt will finish at 74” x 94”, which is a really great twin-size. Adding an additional border or borders would easily make it larger. In keeping with many of Wright’s designs and similar to some of the “modern” quilts that are so popular, there is a fair amount of blank space—which would be great for some detailed quilting.

I was limited to 11 fat quarters (one from each of the par-ticipating Shop Hop shops) but you could add to that num-ber. I recommend the fat quarters be tone-on-tone or solids and if not from the same fabric collection, then at least quite similar in style. You will need to be rather precise in your cutting of most of these—there is not much waste. You will also need about 6 yards of background and again, a solid or tone-on-tone that will contrast well with your fat quarters.

Sew, head out to one of our advertisers to collect your fabric and be ready for cutting instructions and a bit of piec-ing next time. If you have any questions. I can be reached at [email protected]. Happy quilting! l

Preparation begins in March. First, I submit a Buoy Permit application. Once approved and the ice is gone from the lake, we set the prepared platform in an area void of high boating traffic. The platform is man made but we cover it nicely with grasses and cattails to camouflage it from predators. I’m basically in charge of the paperwork. I have a very good support group who generously help with the nest along with many loon watchers that keep me informed.

This year, the loons arrived the last week in March and we were prepared! As past Loon Ranger Helen Sutton graciously reported, they had nested in April and we should be expecting babies the latter part of this month. If an egg doesn’t hatch, I will transport the egg to MSU for testing.

At this point, I along with many loon watchers will moni-tor activity and insure their safety. It’s vitally important to educate people to respect nature. We love our loons and want to share our lake with them. The beautiful sound of the loon call enhances the awesome beauty of our lake. l

I don’t remember Richard Scarry’s “Busytown” books from when I was a kid. But my neph-ews had them, and I remember a character called Lowly Worm. In spite of his name, Lowly had a lot of personality. He wore a Tyro-lean hat on his head and a single sneaker on his tail. And he drove and apple-shaped car.

Real earthworms have a lot less personality. In fact, it’s hard to tell their head from their tail. But from my research, I discovered that worms are interesting creatures.

Earthworms belong to the phylum Annelida, a classification of segmented worms that includes sandworms, leaches, and some-thing called a “sea mouse,” a hairy aquatic worm. Beyond the level of phylum, the classification becomes tricky if not downright confusing, but the phylum Annelida contains around 20,000 different species. Of those 20,000, about 6,000 species are earthworms.

The common earthworm is Lumbricus terrestris, some-times known as dew worm, rainworm, night crawler, or angleworm. Of the more than 180 earthworm species found in North America, 60 are non-native species. About 150 species of earthworm are distributed around the world.

The basic shape of an earthworm is a cylindrical tube, divided into a series of segments. Except for the mouth and anal segments, each segment has bristle-like hairs called lateral setae that are used to anchor parts of the body dur-ing movement. The first body segment has both the worm’s mouth and a fleshy overhanging lobe called the prostomi-um, which seals the entrance when the worm is resting, but is also used to feel and sense the worm’s surroundings.

The exterior of a segment is a layer of cells that secrete mucus to keep the body moist and ease movement through the soil. Under the skin is a layer of nerve tissue, and two layers of muscles. At the center of the worm is the digestive tract, which runs straight through from mouth to anus.

Food enters in the mouth, moves through the esophagus, and passes into the crop and gizzard. There, strong mus-cular contractions grind the food with the help of mineral particles from the soil. The intestine secretes various chemi-

cals to digest different components of food. Fluid wastes are discharged through pores in the worm’s side.

Earthworms do not have eyes, but have specialized photo-sensitive cells called “light cells of Hess.” These are all over the worm, but are more concentrated on the back and sides.

They also have no organs for breathing. Gases are exchanged through the moist skin and capillaries, where oxygen enters and carbon dioxide is released.

Earthworms have male and female organs. A mating pair overlap front ends and each exchanges sperm with the other. A type of cocoon forms in which embryonic worms develop. They emerge as small, but fully formed earthworms, which attain full size in about one year and live about one to two years.

As earthworms move through the soil, they aerate and mix the soil. They pull below the surface organic matter such as leaves and

manure, which they shred and partially digest, mixing it with the soil. Earthworms also alter the mineral content of the soil, changing minerals and plant nutrients into forms which plants can more readily use.

Earthworms are eaten by many animals: birds, snakes, mammals, and various insects. And earthworms are even con-sumed by people. Noke is a culinary term used by the Maori of New Zealand, referring to earthworms which are considered a delicacy for their chiefs. Years ago, Esquire magazine reported what they termed “the understatement of the century,” a recipe for “applesauce surprise cake,” which contained, among other things, a quantity of dried earthworms. l

Vegetation Station

by Don R. Harris ~ photos from Pinterest

Jack-in-the-PulpitA few weeks ago, I visited Meijer Gardens in Grand Rap-

ids, and came across one of the strangest plants. The flower was roughly two feet tall, and a kind of purplish-brown in color. It had a long, spiky thing in the middle, and it smelled simply awful. A small sign said it was called Devil’s Tongue. When I got home, I looked up Devil’s Tongue, and found that it is an Asia relative of the calla lily which uses the smell of decaying flesh to attract pollinating insects. Well, I thought as I posted the picture on Facebook, that’s certainly some-thing you don’t see in Michigan.

It turns out that I was wrong. A relative of Devil’s Tongue does live in Michigan. In fact, I’ve seen it growing in my subdivision. The plant I’m referring to is Jack-in-the-pulpit, Arisaema triphullum, also known as bog onion, brown dragon, Indian turnip, American wake robin, or wild turnip.

Like Devil’s Tongue, Jack-in-the-pulpit is a member of the arum family, as is the calla lily, as well as a native plant called skunk cabbage. Like these other plants, the flowers of Jack-in-the-pulpit have a spadix (the upright spike in the middle that is the Jack) and a spathe (the smooth, ribbon-like part that wraps around and forms the pulpit). The spadix contains the actual flowers.

The plant grows from 12 to 26" high, with leaves occur-ring in threes. Because of this, the leaves of young plants are sometimes mistaken for poison ivy. Native to eastern North America, Jack-in-the-pulpit grows from Nova Scotia west to Minnesota and south to Florida and Texas. It prefers woodland environments, doing best in moist, slightly acid soil that is rich in organic matter.

Jack-in-the-pulpit flowers from April to June, and is polli-nated by flies, which are attracted to the smell. Even though the spadix contains flowers of both sexes, it is not self-pollinating. The male flowers mature and die before female flowers on the same plant mature. Flies carry the pollen from the male flowers on one plant to the female flowers on another. This prohibits inbreeding and contributes to the health of the species.

Red berries form around the spadix in the fall. Each berry contains one to five seeds. The seeds will germinate in spring, but it will take three years or more for a new plant to flower.

All parts of the plant contain needle-like crystals of calcium oxalate (the most common component of kidney stones), as well as oxalic acid. If eaten raw, these chemicals

cause a strong burning sensation. This irritates the mouth and di-gestive system, sometimes causing swelling that affects breathing. In fact, the Meskwaki Indians were reported to have mixed chopped Jack-in-the-pulpit corms with meat and left it to be found by their enemies, causing them pain and death. A preparation of Jack-in-the-pulpit was also used by Native Americans as treatment for sore eyes, as well as rheuma-tism, bronchitis, snakebites, and to induce sterility.

Still, if Jack-in-the-pulpit is properly dried and cooked, it can be eaten as a root vegetable. On one website, I found directions for cooking: “To prepare the roots, peel them and cut them into small pieces, then roast them at a low temperature for at least an hour.” Another website suggested drying

first, and then grinding into flour after roasting. None of this surprise me. Many things, especially plants, can be eaten if one is willing to go to the trouble of preparing them. But somehow, I don’t think I’ll be cooking up a mess of Jack-in-the-pulpit anytime soon. l

Editor’s Note: Our “Got Rocks” series is from the Lake Michigan Rock Picker’s Guide, a must-have for all rock hounds. We left off in September 2016 identifying cool rocks you have found. We’ll con-tinue as the list is long and you need to get picking! Cheers to Kevin and crew at Korner Gem in TC. We WILL get quartzed soon!

BrachiopodsBrachiopods and a

variety of other shells can found through-out the Devonian limestone. (And as a refresher, the Devonian Period occurred from 416 million to 358 million years ago!) It is uncommon to find whole shells, but it is common to find impressions of shells or fragments embedded in shale and limestone.

CladoporaCladopora are

branches of coral (formed similar to the bleached white coral you see at pet stores) that have been buried in compressed mud (shale). Cladopora is best described as a staghorn coral. It often occurs as a grey-white coral in a jet black stone saturated with crude oil, which is what gives the stone its color.

DiamondsYes, I said diamonds!

The Great Lakes region is the largest diamond field in the United States. Northern Can-ada has large diamond deposits, so it makes sense that the glaciers carried diamonds down to what is now Lake Michigan.

The diamonds are found in a path two hundred miles wide that runs from Iowa on the west to Ohio on the east. The largest diamonds have been found in Wisconsin near Milwaukee. The largest that I know of, a 21 and a quarter carat diamond, was found near Theresa, Wisconsin. In Michigan the largest one of nearly 10 carats was found near Dowagiac, which is not far from Warren Dunes State Park

in the southwest part of Michigan.

Diamonds have been found in at least six other Michigan locations, and I’ve heard of others being found along the shores, but they wouldn’t tell me where, and who could blame them! It seems probable that there are many more diamonds ly-ing unrecognized on Lake Michigan beaches.

Diamonds tend to look frosty and oily. They may or may not have crystal faces. A perfect crystal is unlikely, but a perfect crystal will have 8 faces and 6 points, an octahedral shape. Wisconsin diamonds have a dodecahedral shape instead. If you find a small stone that reflects like feldspar and it is very, very hard (will scratch anything), it could be a diamond. (Note: wet/dry sandpaper will scratch any stone on the beach, except a diamond.)

Diamonds have a perfect cleav-age plane and will reflect light off these planes. When I told a lady about diamonds being found on Lake Michigan, she said with a surprised look, “That’s what my father meant when he told me every once in awhile Lake Michigan will cough up a diamond.” Who knows? You just may be lucky!

Be sure to pick up the July issue of The Northern Camper. We’ll have more photos and descriptions so you can iden-tify your treasures. And if you’re in the Traverse area, be sure to stop in and say “Hi” to Kevin and crew at Korner Gem. They’re celebrating 20 years of business and you will be amazed to see what they can do with rocks! l

THE JORDAN RIVER PATHWAY was established to provide a hik-ing and backpacking venue through the Jordan River Valley. You can take a short hike of about 3 miles on the Deadman’s Hill loop which starts at the top of Deadman’s Hill or, you can plan to take the whole two-day hike and spend the night at Pinney Bridge campground that is located at the end of the first day hike.

The entries to the Jordan River Pathway are all on country roads. The trail is not particularly strenuous but hiker’s should plan for rest and water. No motors are allowed here and the pathway is not suitable for cross country skiing. Along the way you will pass through a number of different stands of trees, old logging sites, beaver floodings and more.

The Jordan River was designated as Michigan’s first Natural Scenic river in 1972. As with many other areas, this region was ravaged by wild fire; here it was the great fire of 1909. Deadman’s Hill is worth a day trip on its own merits. Take US 131 north from Alba and watch for the small sign. l
