INTRODUCTION

Propulsion is a mechanism to move a ship or boat by means of thrust produced by propellers. The method of propulsion is evolved by many fast swimming creatures. The scope of our work is :

To Show the physical mechanism of twin oscillation wing configuration.

To propose a complete methodology for choosing an optimal twin wing propulsor.

CONSTRUCTION

We will design two ship model A ship with simple propeller (REGULAR OR

CONVENTIONAL) A ship with fish like propulsion system

In the ship without fish propulsion system, we will use simple propulsion system that are being used before. And the ship with fish propulsion system will contain newly developed propulsors that are of fins type. These are the two models we are going to make.

Page 6: FISH PROPULSION

IN a regular propeller we use wooden piece which have a better ability to float , a simple propeller and we will use a plastic rod to connect it with a motor and run it. And there is the fish like propulsion system, we will use wooden piece (catamaran body type) attached with wooden flap at the back. We will laminate the wood with plastic for water proof. In both the model we will use permanent magnet DC motor having same power output or same configuration. Battery will be used for power supply. Battery will be either of 3volt, 6volt or 9volt. In fish like propulsion system we will use reciprocating mechanism for attending swapping profile. We can use this method in any ship. It will run even in underwater.

PRINCIPLE

The principle is based upon the movement of fish tail and the oscillation of its fins. Fish, in general, swim one of two ways; thrust is either generated by periodic movement of some portion of the creature’s main body, or by any of a number of mechanisms involving the creature’s median and pectoral fins. Scientists have identified two primary phenomena at work during fish swimming that are responsible for propulsive thrust. The first is an added-mass effect whereby the fish body impartsmomentum to the water directed backward and an equal opposing force is exerted on thefish propelling it forward. The second is a vorticity effect whereby the vortices in thefish body’s own wake impart a propulsive force.

WORKING1. FISH LIKE PROPULSION SYSTEM

The rotary motion is given to the pulley from the motor. This rotary motion is transformed into reciprocating one with the help of the crank link and the reciprocating link. This reciprocation motion is then transformed into auxiliary motion of the flaps with the help of the wire linking and flap pivots. The angular motion of the flap is from through 0° to 50° and back. This is same for both the flaps.

Page 9: FISH PROPULSION

Keeping the angular displacement much lower would have made the system inefficient; on the other hand, keeping it more would have led to extra vibration in the entire unit. These flaps with their angular motion pushes water that comes in contact with them, because there flaps are pivoted at other end the water finds it way away from the flaps in the direction of fix end. The peculiar motion of the flaps creates amplified vertices and pushes them away from the float body, thus the resistance created by the vertical is lowered down, just like fish.

2. PROPELLER SYSTEM

The rotary motion is given to the pulley with the help of motor (2V DC). This rotary motion is transferred to the propeller with the help of the propeller mounting assembly by lowering down the speed. The speed attend is same as that in case of the fin model. The propeller pushes back water with its blades angled at 30°, which is the conventional way of working and thus the propeller the unit. But in the case of vortices of water remains on the float body itself, thus increasing the resistance.

APPLICATIONS

The fish like propulsion system is mostly used by the Marines. They implement the method in their ships for different purposes.

The fish propulsion system is also used in passenger ferries. The fish propulsion system is used in many private yachts.

Although the use of fish propulsion system has not been accepted vastly because of low speed. The scientists are engrossed in their work to modify the fish propulsion system with better speed and with required features.
