Britain). New York 1929. Original blue cloth, gilt title on spine, 24cm, 149 pp. Text in Hebrew with a few pages in English. A vigourous criticism of British policy in Palestine. Ex Library was the copy of Rabbi Yehuda Lieb Maimon, and has his bookplate. Rabbi Maimon (1875-1962) was a member of the first Israeli Knesset (Parliament) and one the drafters and signers of the Israeli

Declaration of Independence. It seems appropriate as in 1946, he was imprisoned by the British in Latrun during Operation Agatha. The British detained him on the Jewish Sabbath, and he objected to riding in a vehicle on the Sabbath, and offered instead to walk to a nearby police station. The British refused his offer and forcibly manhandled him into a

Self wrapps, 22cm, 4pp Text in English and Hebrew. Very good condition. Sir Moses Montefiore went to Rome to plead with the Pope in the Mortara Affair - Edgardo Levi Mortara was a Jewish boy who became the center of an international controversy when he was removed from his Jewish parents by authorities of the Papal States and raised as a Roman Catholic. Church authorities took custody of the boy after receiving a report that he had been given emergency baptism by a domestic servant during a serious infantile illness. In the Papal States it was against the law for non-Catholics to raise Catholic children. Mortara was adopted by Pope Pius IX and became a Roman Catholic priest.
