The fish of these shoreline grounds, due probably to the greater large quantity of food in this article, are thought to be distinctly superior in good quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshorebanks. The cod and the haddock, specifically, of the Gulf of Maine are especially well conditionedseafood and are noted for their excellence.

The numbers presented in Desk 2 show only a fraction of the catch from the Inner Grounds, sincethey deal completely with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net loads and over. There are thousands ofthe so-called "licensed" or "under-tonned" boats, mostly gill-netters, that take an incredible numberof pounds from these oceans annually, principally cod and haddock.

In the Maine coast and across the line in NewBrunswick there are more than 300 weirs whichfurnished to American smokers and canners duringthe year 1923 (whose figures have already beenchosen as symbolizing an average season)77,000,000 weight of herring. Around the coast ofMassachusetts there are 50 or more fish and weirstraps, and in the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Part ofMaine there are more than 50 floating traps in thevarious bays, on the points of offshore islands, orperhaps the open water, and all these require a richharvest readily available waters. , there is the lobster fishery, more important in the Gulf of Mainethan anywhere else in the United States.too and Then

Of such various branches from the fisheries industries number of statistics are available, nevertheless we may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vesselsmentioned landed 5,324,426 weight of fish on the port of Boston, mostly of haddock and cod, whichthe same type of art in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily ofground species of fish. We also know that each and every island, city, hamlet and village and citytogether this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll from your sea.

Lukes Rock and roll. This rock is situated S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, circular in shape, and about 1 mile in diameter. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom ispea gravel and rocks, and mud. This is primarily a small-fishing boat fishing ground, but there is however some vesselminn kota endura. Hake are taken here from June to September, inclusive; cod are present about therocks the year around. Pollock are here in fall and spring season, and haddock from December toFeb, inclusive. Fishing is simply by trawl and hand line.

Newfound Terrain. A small rocky area about 1/4 mile throughout with an automatic buoy in thecenter for guidance into the Bay of Fundy. This can be a small-motorboat ground having depthsaveraging 18 fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. seasons and Species areas on Lukes Rock. Minn Kota Endura is simply by hand and trawl line.

Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 distance in diameter, and 30fathoms spanning a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand series and trawl. Cod are

present the year around, a few haddock inside the fall, hake during the summer time but not in thedrop, and pollock in spring and fall.

Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly round in form, and ? mileacross. It features a bottom of depths and rocks of from 35 to 40 fathoms. Varieties and seasons areexactly the same as on Lukes Rock, but primarily cod and pollock are taken in this article by trawland hand line.

Traditional western Egg Rock. This can be SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 a long way distant, lyingwithin a NE. and SW. direction, 3 mls long by 1 mile wide. The base isirregular and sharp, and rockyand has 25 to 30 fathoms. Sportfishing here is mostly by hand line, the ground simply being said tobe too difficult for trawling. It is a small-boat ground, and angling is done mainly during the summerseason. Cod and pollock are consumed in thespring and summer, and fall; haddock exist in fall andspring; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in spring and drop. This is not a hake ground.

Old Egg cell Rock. This rock is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE.and SW. path. It is 3 miles long by 1 mile wide; includes a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30fathoms. Trawls also are employed, even though this is also a tiny-boat floor, where minn kotaendura is completed mainly by hand facial lines. This ground is fished by the larger sized vessels inthe fall months when the weather conditions are too rough for minn kota endura on the outsidegrounds. , and a few pollock are taken in fall and spring; hake in fair number within the fallmonths.Cod and haddock

Midsection Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It is based on a NE. and SW.direction and is also about 1 mile long by ? mile wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and alsothe bottom is difficult and rocky. It really is a small-fishing boat ground mostly and also of littleimportance as a minn kota endura ground. Cod are present the year around haddock in late summerand spring with a smaller quantity in the fall. Cusk are here the year around. A few pollock are herein the fall and spring.

Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 miles, whence the ground expands WSW toinside 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock and roll with an average breadth of 1 mile. The depths operatefrom 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are difficult and sharp; the gravel, clay and deeps. There areplaces ? mile long and others 3 miles long experiencing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these spotshave special names: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds mentioned here andthose above mentioned are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem to beminn kota endura spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. Around the Broken Ground thefishing season is from June 1 by means of September. Herring usually are abundant right here fromMay to September. Cod are taken outside of the grounds in spring and fall. Pollock and small cod aretaken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud bottom in fall and summer and hake onthe mud bottom part in summer and fall.

Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies eastern from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island overEnvironmentally friendly Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Tropical island. This ledgecontains two rocky shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in extent and 1/4mile away from each other lying NW and SE from each other. To the westward of the is brokenterrain nearly to Petit Manan. These are favorite small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge dropsinstantly into the mud. In May large cod are caught over the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock are taken in late early spring (May) and fall. Fishing is by palm

trawl and series.

Ben's Ground. Is situated ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 mls. The marks are Petit Manan Light tonorthward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain around the west side ofTrafton's Island or Pond Island Light to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The floor is circular in goodshape, about 3/4 mile all over, having 14 to 30 fathoms of water. The bottom is of mud and rocks. This ground is of little importance except as a modest-boat ground in summer for cod and haddock.Hake are adopted the muddy bottom part near it, It really is a winter haddock terrain in calmweather conditions, these fish leaving behind it in the hard storms, the water being relatively tooshallow to enable them to "ride out a blow" in comfort, This kind of at least is the cause thefishermen give for the sudden cessation of their taking on shoal grounds after a period of heavyweather.

Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest spot, SSE from Petit 4and Manan? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles around anirregular base, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are haddock,Cod and muddy are used here in June and could, hake from July to September, This is a good lobstersoil, also, Fishing is by handline and trawl operated from vessels and little boats from close to-byMaine ports.

Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This is SSE from Petit Manan 7 kilometers to the center. It canbe 2 miles lengthy NE and SW and one mile broad and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom of dirtand rocks is incredibly uneven, The shoalest portion is nearby the center. It is said as a good cod andhaddock ground, and is mainly a small vessel ground, although some vessel minn kota endura ismaintained here in the spring.

Black Ledges Ground. This terrain lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges.Alternatively, Black colored Ledges. It is a great haddock ground for any brief season in the springand early summer season when the fish are following the herring schools. In general it is a tiny-boatterrain on which chiefly hands lines and trawls are operated, A number of cod and cusk are takenhere in the fall, which is a good lobster soil.

Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern partbears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average widthsimply being ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. Itis not much fished about the shoaler spots, but also in 30 to 35 fathoms, on a dirty bottom, hake areabundant from July to October, comprehensive. Cod and cusk can be found here in the early springand fall; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura here is done by little boatsand tiny vessels mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by hand and trawl line. It is a reallygood lobster ground.

Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is adifficult patch of 4 or 5 acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important with theexception of its hand-lining for cod and haddock in the fall and spring season months and for hake inthe fall. It really is a good lobster floor.

Egg http://fishing.about.com/ Rock Broken Ground. This is a rocky ridge making out S. by W. fromEgg Rock Ledges and is a couple of miles long by 14 miles wide. It has an unnatural bottom, withdepths from 9 to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Reasons, divides the western orBakers Tropical island mud channel from Schoodic mud funnel. Both these were earlier consideredvery good hake grounds but, while still good, are not as profitable for hake minn kota endura like in

past years. Haddock are taken on the ridge in the spring as well as inOctober and Nov, andDecember. A few cod are consumed the fall and spring. Minn Kota Endura is simply by trawl andhands line. It is a great lobster ground.

Inner Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles. This soil is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in diameter, and has depths jogging from 18 to 60fathoms. The bottom is ofrocks and gravel, and mud; the shoaler portions are sharp and rocky.Vessels from Maine plug-ins use this ground, sportfishing by hand line and trawl. Cod and haddockare ample here in fall and spring, and hake fishing is good with the summer. It is a excellent lobsterground.

Exterior Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this soil bears SE. from Bakers Island, that it isdistant 22 miles. Barbecues shouldnt always be used

or isolation valvesIt is placed 7 miles exterior Inner Schoodic, is definitely considered one of the bestshoreline minn kota endura grounds of the Maine coast, and yet seems to deserve the reputation. The ridge is about 8 kilometers long in a NE. and SW. path, lying nearly parallel with the adjacentcoastline. Its greatest breadth is 6 mls. The bottom is broken and irregular and contains depths from22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler parts and dirt on the deeps. Primarily Mainevessels fish this ground, employing hand line and trawl. cusk, pollock, Cod and haddock and hakeare present here from June to December, and a few large halibut, up to 300 pounds in weight, aretaken here in July and June.

Install Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge is SE. by E. from the Big Slope of Mount Desert Island. FromSchoodic Island to the middle of this ground is around 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by S, is 2miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. Depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are difficult, but on theedges sand and clay predominate. This is a comparatively small ground, but it furnishes good codminn kota endura in the spring (April to July) and tumble. Cusk are taken in the fall and spring.Virtually no haddock are taken right here. Hake are in the deep water around the W. and SW.inspring and summer, and fall; trawl lines principally. Inspect your lagging of motor and also heaterexhausts regarding damage along with deterioration as well as regional products regarding heatdamage or charring.are used in this article. It is a good lobster ground but is way too distant forprovide fishing methods.

Flat Ground. This soil lies between Attach Swan and Wilderness Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50fathoms, over a hard mud bottom, there is good sportfishing for hake during the summer time. MinnKota Endura is by palm line and trawl.

Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Island. This is a small hummock on theouter aspects of a ridge increasing out to it from Great Duck tropical isle. It has a sharp, rockybottom with depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are the strategies employed totake several cod in early spring season; haddock are within small numbers during the summer aswell as a small quantity of hake. It is a excellent lobster ground.

Banks Ground. The centre bears SE. by S. from Fantastic Duck Island, remote about 5 a long way. Itis about 1? miles long within a NE. and SW. direction by 1/4 mile wide and has a mud bottom withdepths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is mainly a little-boat floor, fished mostly in the summer, when hakeare fairly abundant and there are a few haddock and cod. It is a lobster ground, also.

In the middle portion is ashoal of 25 fathoms, its bottom part sharp rocks. On all sides of this shoal the bottom is quiteunusual, consisting of pebbles and mud. The greatest depth, near the edge of the bank, is 50fathoms. It really is mainly a hake minn kota endura ground for small boats as well as an occasionallarger craft, all using hands line and trawl, even though haddock and Cod, together with a handful ofcusk and pollock, are taken in June, July, and August and even to the late fall. This is a good lobsterfloor.

Abner Ground. This ground is SSE. from Gott's Tropical isle, distant 8 kilometers. It extends 1? milesin a NE. and SW. route and is about 1/4 mile wide. The bottom is mud, rocks and broken, withdepths of from 25 to 50 fathoms. This is principally a haddock ground, the best year being in Julyand August, and is resorted to mostly by small craft.

Grumpy. Extends from SE. 4? miles from Eastern Ear of Isle au Haute to SE. 1/4 E. from the westernmind of Isle au Haute, distant 7 miles. This soil is 2? mls long by 3/4 distance wide and has acompact shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part. Over the remainder of the ground the averagedepths run from 35 to 40 fathoms over a gravelly underside. Though not of great importance of pastdue years, this was earlier considered one of the best inshore grounds for cod for the entire year andfor haddock in winter. Hake usually are abundant just off the southeast edge in summer time. Thisbank is generally fished by create from ports of eastern Maine--small boats as a rule--and theprincipal technique is by trawling, although there is considerable hand-lining for cod in 25 fathomsin June and July. Represents: Big Camden Hill over the Eastern Hearing of Isle au Haute; Fog Isle inJericho Bay, touching on the eastern part of Big Place Island; Brimstone among Isle au Haute andthe Western Ear canal.

This is a greatground for cod in the fall and spring but is right for haddock during the complete winter. Hand trawland lines are used.

Inner Horse Reef. This reef is situated SE. ? E 1? miles from the eastern ear of isle au Haute. Thereexists a shoal here of 25 fathoms about 1/8 mile in size. From this the water slowly deepens to NE.for ? mile, where it drops away from into the mud. Depths on this northeast segment are about 35fathoms. The bottom is of pebbles and gravel. In drop and spring this is a great cod ground. Hakeare found close to the side in summer. Minn Kota Endura is by small art, generally, using trawl andhandline. It is actually a good lobster ground. Marks: Bring Blue Hill Mountain from the saddle ofBright white Horse; Brimstone displaying between Western Isle and Ear au Haute.

Outer Horse Reef. This is a brief distance SW. in the Inner Reef, with only a narrow gully between. The small shoal falls off rapidly on all sides. It comes with a depths of 30 fathoms. Over a place 1/4mile in size the bottom is gravelly. Seasons and kinds are as on Inner Horse Reef.

Hake Ground. The first label because of the abundance of hake taken on this page during June, July, and August, northern of Monhegan isle lies a patch called the Hake Ground or Mud Channel. Itextends from just outside White-colored Head to abreast of Monhegan Island on the northern side. The depths vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, and also the ground is still considered one of the best hakereasons alongshore. Barley Hill Ground. This ground lies NNE. from Seal Isle and SSW from your western head of Isle auHaute directly in range between the two, about 3? miles distant from each position. It is circular inform, has 28 to 30 fathoms of water, and the bottom is mixed rocks and mud. It is a ground muchresorted to by sloops and larger vessels, and the fishing is actually by hand line and trawls. It is avery good cod ground in fall and spring season and a hake terrain on the mud and rocks in summer.Occasionally a few halibut are taken in this article during July and June. It is also a lobster ground.

Gilkey Ground. This bears S. from the traditional western head of Isle au Haute. 4 miles distant. Itextends ENE. and WSW about 1? miles long by 1/3 mile wide. The bottom is rocky about the shoalswhere depths are about 23 fathoms sloping to 35 fathoms on the southwest part., where bottom isgravelly and comparatively sleek.

Rock Cod Ledge. This ledge is situated NE. of Close off Island 1 mile. It has a depth of 3? fathoms onthe shoalest part, deepening steadily on all sides for any considerable distance. The bottom is ofrazor-sharp rocks and is damaged in places. Rock cod area within fair numbers in spring and tumble, and this is a mackerel and herring ground in their seasons. Haddock are abundant in the fall close into the rocks of Close off Island in 6 to 15 fathoms. This is not a hake ground, although there aremany cusk to be had here on the deeper pieces and an occasional small halibut is consumed the kelpabout the shoal in June and July. It is a very good lobster ground.

Gravel Bottom and Southeast Ground. These rest S. of Seal Island. forming anextensive piece of fairly stage groundextensive bit of fairly level floor. Thewestern that bears a little E. of S. andalso the eastern part about ESE. fromthe isle. It is about 5 or 10 mls indiameter. Even though this is really butone bit of ground, the eastern part iscalled the Southeast Ground and alsothe western part, through the nature ofits bottom.

The Gravel Bottom part. The easternsegment is muddy and has 40 to 60 fathoms. The western has 35 to 40 fathoms. It really is a goodcod soil in spring and winter. Haddock can be found from November to March, inclusive; hake insummer. Sportfishing is done mainly by trawling by sloops and vessels.

Laisdells Ground. This is a tiny, rocky spot outside the Brandy Ledges. It is about 1/4 acre in extentand has a sharp rocky underside with 20 fathoms of water over it. It is the best cod and haddockground in Isle au Haute Bay. This is chiefly a small motorboat ground and is also a lobster ground.

Page 8: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

Saddleback Reef. This reef lies S. from Saddle-rear Ledge, 3/4 mile faraway. It is about 2/3 mile longN and S by 1/4 mile wide. Depths are from 15 to 35 fathoms over a broken and rocky bottom. Codare taken on this page by hand line in June and May; cod and haddock by trawling in tumble andwinter (November to January 1). It is a good lobster ground and chiefly a small-vessel ground.

Otter Island Reef; Snipper Shin; Western Reef. These are typically names applied to diverse sectionsof an abnormal, broken piece of rocky ground about halfway between Vinalhaven and Seal Island.Otter Island Reef is the eastern section, lying 4 miles W. by S. by 1/4 S. from the european head ofIsle au Haute. Depths here are from 10 to 25 fathoms over a rocky base. The trawl, earlier not muchused here, is now in general use. It is best for cod in winter and spring and also for haddock in theslip, from November 1 to January 1, though this is a haddock and cod floor at seasons when thesefish will be in shoal water.

Outdated Ripper. This is situated S. from the American Ground (Western Reef) and 10 kilometersWSW. from Criehaven or Ragged Tropical isle. Apparently this is a part of the Western Ground. Onthe deep-water mud bottom between these (Ripper and Western Reef) is useful hake fishing insummer, and cusk are abundant from May to the time when the dogfish attack the ground, usuallyabout July 5 to 10.

Crie Ridges. These lay 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock, 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or RaggedIsland, and run SE. from Western Ground toward Matinicus, distant 4? to 5 mls. Cod, pollock, andcusk are here in the spring, and haddock are abundant within the fall.

Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Tennis ball Island and work off in a nearly direct linefor Matinicus Rock. These are each from 1/4 to ? mile wide, are quite close together, the distancesbetween them being not over ? distance, and they are almost parallel with each other. It is virtually circular in form, about 4 mls across, and has depths from 40 to 60fathoms. The base, of gravel and rocks, is somewhat damaged. It is a good cod and cusk ground infall and spring and a haddock ground in winter and it is fished by vessels and sloops, generally bytrawling though with a certain amount of hand liner, in May and June. A summer hake ground
