5 AIRCRAFT SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
Background information
Aircraft Maintenance is a systematic, explicit and comprehensive process for the management
of safety risks, that integrates operations and technical systems with financial management
and human resources, for all activities relate to an air operator or an approved maintenance.
The material contained in this module is for explanatory and language purposes only. Where
existing systems or components have been referenced, the example is used for the purpose of
clarity and to demonstrate the use of English. It is not my intention to advocate that particular
systems be used. In keeping with performance based regulations, this module is intended to
provide simplified technical English language details of the various regulatory maintenance
requirements and to offer examples of possible ways these elements can be used.

5.1.1 Electrical power sources
A320: AMM 24.00.001
1 General
Two integrated drive generators (IDG) normally supply the a/c electrical power in
flight; each engine drives one generator. The APU drives a third, auxiliary generator
(APU GEN) which can replace either main generator (GEN 1 or GEN 2).
The generators supply the distribution network with alternating current. Two
transformer rectifiers (TR) supply, in normal configuration, the distribution network
with direct current. In the event of major failure, a constant-speed hydraulic motor
drives an emergency generator (CSM/G) to supply the systems required for a/c
control. On the ground, an electrical ground power unit (GPCU) can supply the a/c.
Independent power supply is also possible from the APU GEN.

1 AC Generation
A) 115/200 Volt Three-Phase Network
The main source of electrical power is the two 400 Hz constant frequency 90
KVA AC generators, each of which is driven mechanically by an engine
through a constant speed drive unit (SCD).
Each generator supplies distribution bus bars via line contactors.
Each generator is capable of supporting all the electrical loads through
transfer contactors.
A third generator, identical to the others, is driven directly at constant speed by
an auxiliary power unit (APU).
This generator ensures the electrical autonomy of the aircraft on the ground,
and can be used in flight to compensate for the loss of one or both of the
normal generators.
B) 400 Hz Single-Phase 115 Volt AC Network
A single-phase static inverter, supplied by the “emergency” DC bus bar,
supplies the emergency AC bus bar in case of failure of the main AC network.

5.1.2 Insulation damage
A300: SB 24.0692
B Reason Several instances have been reported of damage to the insulation of some electrical cable looms at the wing-to-pylon interface. Such damage could be induced by chafing of cable looms against the retaining “P” clips created by variations in this zone. This modification replaces these “P” clips with a clamp block assembly mounted on a new support angle, thereby providing a firmer method of attachment and a decrease in the amount of bending of the looms at this position.
C Description Embodiment of this modification on the a/c consist in: (1) Removing access panels at the top of the L.H. and R.H. pylons. (2) Removing and discarding some of the “P” clips attaching cable looms to a bracket
fixed to the bottom surface of the wing leading edge skin. (3) Bolting of a new support angle to the bracket on the wing skin. (4) Installation of a new clamp block and the retained “P” clips to secure the cable
looms to the new support angle. (5) Replacement of access panels.

5.1.3 Wiring error
SUBJECT: A320 ATA 24 – IDG MPU WIRING AND MMEL
EMENDMENT
1 EVENT THE PURPOSE OF THIS TELEX IS TO INFORM ALL A320 OPERATORS THAT A NUMBER OF A320 IDG MAGNETIC PICK-UP (MPU) SPEED SENSORS WERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE NOISE CANCELLATION COIL WIRED IN REVERSE. IN THIS CONFIGURATION THE FUNCTION OF THE COIL IS NO LONGER REALISED AND IN FACT NOISE MAY BE ADDED ON THE MPU SIGNAL.
2 OPERATIONAL EFFECTS A NON-COMPLYING MPU NOISE CANCELLATION COIL IS ONLY KNOWN TO AFFECT NORMAL SYSTEM OPERATION AT ENGINE START. DURING AN ENGINE START THE GCU MONITORS THE MPU SIGNAL. WHEN THIS SIGNAL IS ABOVE 4320 RPM THE GLC CLOSE AFTER A 80 MS TIME DELAY. IF NOISE IS SUPERIMPOSED ONTO THE MPU SIGNAL THE GCU COMPUTES AN OVERESTIMATED IDG SPEED. IF THE CALCULATED SPEED IS GREATER THAN 4320 RPM THE GENERATOR LINE CONTACTOR (GLC) WILL CLOSE. Use the telex to find the words with the same meaning as these words:

5.2.1 Cable re-routing

RE-REUTING OF CABLE FOR HIGH LEVEL SENSOR IN OUTER TANK
A Reason There have been occurrences where the high level sensor cable between the ribs 26 and 27 in the outer fuel tank has been found chafed. The clipping and routing of the cable coupled with excessive slack between “P” clips could allow it to chafe against the support canister for the magnetic level indicator (MLI).
To prevent cable chafing, this modification introduces locally manufactured longer cleats and a reversal of the “P” clips supporting cable. To prevent further cable sag, “P” clips of a smaller size are used to grip the cable tighter. This ensures that adequate clearance is maintained between the cable and the MLI support canister.
B Action MODIFICATION OF AIRCRAFT
Drain the fuel tanks, remove the manhole covers, remove the “P” clips and cleats, manufacture new cleats, install new cleats, install new “P” clips, install the manhole covers and test for leakage.

ONE HPC STAGE 1 VARIABLE STATOR VANE (VSV) LEVER ARM WAS FOUND TO BE DISENGAGED FROM THE VSV ACTUATION HALF-RING. THIS ALLOWED THE VANE TO ROTATE FREELY DURING ENGINE OPERATION WHICH RESULTED IN A ONE-PER-REV EXCITATION TO THE STAGE 1 BLADE RESULTING IN THE HCF BLADE FAILURE. ALL INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE STAGE 1 VSV LEVER ARM WAS NOT ENGAGED IN THE VSV ACTUATION RING DURING THE LAST ENGINE SHOP VISIT (376 HOURS/172 CYCLES) PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. ORIGIN OF THE LEAK WAS DETERMINED TO BE A CRACK IN THE NUMBER 5 BEARING OIL DAMPER CAVITY SUPPLY TUBE, CLOSE TO THE INLET COVER FITTING WELD JOINT. IN BOTH CASES, THE FAULTY TUBE WAS REPLACED ON WING AND THE A/C RELEASED FOR REVENUE SERVICE. THE AFFECTED HARDWARE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION TO ESTABLISH THE CAUSE OF THE CRACK AND DEFINE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. IF LEAKS FROM A NO. 5 BEARING OIL DAMPED CAVITY SUPPLY TUBE ARE CONFIRMED, A PROCEDURE IS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE THE TUBE ON-WING.
