Besides my productive research activities at Hiroshima University, I had a great opportunity to
visit a leading industry in grain milling technology, Satake Corporation, National Brewing
Research Institute, Hiroshima Prefecture Agriculture Research Station, and several departments
particularly molecular area related to my field of research at Hiroshima University. I have also
interacted with undergraduate and graduate students and learned about their educational system.
Besides research and educational experience in Japan, the Japanese culture, heritage, language,
people’s day today life changed my perception of life. The entire sabbatical stay in Japan is
positive, and I gained lot of experience in research and personal life.

the Ecosystem Studies to conduct a day workshop on NSF funding priorities, proposal
preparation, review criteria, and students research opportunities.
Research Program Reviewer - Lake Pontchartrain Basin Research Program, Department
of Biology, Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA. May 9 – 12, 2006. Served as
a site reviewer for the research program funded by EPA. Had opportunity to meet with the Dean
of Arts and Sciences, Provost, and the University President. Evaluated the overall performance of
the program and made recommendations for improvement and successful research activities for
environmental restoration of the wetlands.
Symposium Organizer - Organized a special one-day symposium on “Advances in Molecular
Approaches in Soil Microbiology” at Soil Science Society of America Conference, Nov 9-10,
2005, Salt Lake City, UT. Invited experts in various fields of molecular soil microbiology for a
special presentation. Compiling manuscripts for publication as special issue in Soil Science
Society of America Journal. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden Research Service Agreement with FIU – Member, Represented Environmental Studies Department. Department of Environment and Occupational Health Graduate Program Committee – Member, Represented Environmental Studies Department. High School Teachers Workshop - Co-Organized with Dr. Bhat. Recruited 15 high school teachers and conducted Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture July 17-22, 2006. Co-Ordinated two day lectures followed by laboratory and field trips. We had a successful one week workshop.

Access and Equity Committee – Member and Chair of Diversity Advisory and Minority
Enrollment Committee. A & E Committee is The President’s committee to monitor and review
several activities in FIU including equal employment opportunities, gender, sexual orientation,
race discrimination, diversity atmosphere, students accessibility to facilities etc. Attended
monthly meetings and working on diversity and minority enrollment issues.

structure, invited faculty members to join as affiliates to the program. Developed faculty and
student database, developed opportunities for the undergraduate students to identify funding
sources. Served as the Director of the program for two years - 2003-2005.
Associate Editor for Journal of Environmental Quality (2002-2005 and 2005-2008) –
Responsible for identifying reviewers, compile review summary, and evaluate the publication
quality of the manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Environmental Quality. Communicate with
the editor, technical editor, and the head quarters regarding the review process.
Editorial Advisory Board Member for Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment (2002-
continue) – Review manuscripts on monthly one manuscript basis, provide review and evaluation
to the editorial office. Discuss journal ratings and develop strategies to improve the publication
quality.
Biological Control Executive Board Member (2005 – 2010)
Mentorship - Served as mentor for several EVR majors and High School Student. Jose Pacheco,
a transfer student is being trained on microbiological techniques. We sent him to Washington,
DC to participate in minority students leadership conference.
Two of my undergraduate students received “Outstanding Students Award” in 2006-07
under EVR BS category and one of my graduate students received “Outstanding Graduate
Student Award”
Students Recruitment - Dr. Bhat and I made several visits to Miami-Dade County High
Schools (~2 hours per school) to recruit students to Agroecology program and EVR major.

USDA-ARS News Magazine featured my research work on pesticides sorption and desorption
mechanisms and the significance of soil quality in August 2001.
Created Prokaryotic Interest Group (PIG) with Dr. Kalaimathee, Molecular Microbiologist
from Biology. We meet as a group every Thursday between 12 and 1 to discuss microbial
ecology research. Invite speakers for an informal discussion in this area.
