? Social media is just a new way of communica3ng. But unlike the telephone, or email, you’re on the

record. If your customer service isn’t up to scratch, exposing it through social media is a bad idea. Before you go public, make sure the people represen3ng you are empowered to do the job properly.

This phone call is actually a really amazing representative example of why I don’t want to stay with Comcast. The way you can help me is by disconnecting my service.

And hugely more likely to be retweeted. Consider the increased reach that your brand will have.


Brands are becoming smarter at using specific features of various social media channels to their advantage. Here’s the recent TwiGer image preview within the 3meline. It crops part of the image.


Spo3fy have cleverly ensured that the parts of the image that have been cropped out tell a story when the user clicks on the image to see it in full.

How believable and on-‐brand is your social media ac3vity? If it isn’t, you’ll be found out.


Don’t think about this for too long: which brand posted this?


Well done if you guessed it was Audi. But it’s not very “Audi”, is it? Audi’s followers thought the same.


Talk about things people will connect with your business.

Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone from 3me to 3me, but, in general, think about whether your audience will believe that you really said it.


Schedule your activities carefully.

5 tweets in quick succession says “there’s a PR person doing this”. Use tools like Buffer to ensure that your ac3vity is 3mely, and targets periods when your audience is ac3ve.


Don’t jump on the #bandwagon.

It’s really easy to hijack a hashtag, hoping to pick up some traffic.

The goal is to get people talking and sharing.

The halo effect of producing amazing, shareable content is compelling.


Blend social with physical. 4


A great way to get people sharing your brand, content and products is to provide them with relevant offers based on when they are physically close to your stores.


Apple’s iBeacon lets you detect when your customers are in your premises.


But how do you get them online? We’ve all used hotel and coffee shop WiFi hotspots that make it horribly difficult to connect – but there are beGer ways.

This is the real win, though. Detailed insight into the people who are using your facili3es.

Consumers are bombarded with adver3sing, marke3ng, product insights and offers. You can tell them all about what you have to offer, but you’ll find its more effec3ve to talk to them.


Instead of shou3ng “look at our nice green dress”, how about ge^ng people to share selfies of how great they look wearing it. Which is more likely to be shared?


Ask for opinions. Ask people to vote.

Instead of telling people what you want them to hear, ask them a ques3on. Ask them to interact with you.
